1:13:15 Jane Manning ... if you go to the official church history story about her, you will find that she was not sealed to the Smiths as a slave posthumously but when she was still alive but by proxy because of the ban. So the church would not let her participate in the ceremony that was directly for her.

    • @elijahhawaii
      @elijahhawaii ปีที่แล้ว

This is the quote from the official version - note the other, usual temple ordinances were done posthumously, but the "sealed as a slave" ceremony (slave not servant because theres no such thing as a paid servant in the afterlife) was done some years before she passed and decades after the end of slavery in the US.
"Church leaders eventually allowed her to be sealed by proxy into the Joseph Smith family as a servant in 1894, a unique occurrence. Although she did not receive the temple endowment or family sealings during her lifetime, these ordinances were performed in her behalf in 1979.
She died April 16, 1908, at the age of 85, always a faithful Latter-day Saint."

I’m in Utah and i literally watched Porn Hub this afternoon… did they just ban subscriptions? Cause I just watch for free…
Spoke too soon… yep it isn’t working anymore. Oh well, it’s not like there aren’t other sites with the exact same content. Banning the Hub didn’t really do anything.

The STATE literally just started controlling what we are allowed to watch, in such a soviet style, that even tho I'm not interested in porn, it's a very dangerous precedent for them controlling EVERYTHING we see.
Every website that doesn't jive with them controlling us, forcing us to register our ID with the government in order to watch something is terrifying. Especially when this same group of people would clutch their pearls if you suggested increasing regulation of buying or possessing a gun.

About the haircut; years ago I had a friend who was a Reformed Rabbi. He once waggled a finger at me and advised me that, "To not give a f-ck conveys a terrible power upon a man," something I took to heart. It's true! Simply not caring gives you a weird kind of immunity to the madness of others that we all need now. I have my barber take a hedgetrimmer to my hair to show it who's boss. I am strangely happy!

He has a history of treating his fans poorly and retaliating against even the fairest of criticism. If y'all want to be friends with him, that's on you. So.... check me on this: he's a historian, right? Because there were so many weird inaccuracies in the stories he told.
For example, John Taylor was English, not Canadian. Yes, he met Parley P. Pratt in Canada and joined the church there, but he was still English.
Aunt Jane was still very much alive in 1894 when she was sealed by proxy to be Joseph's eternal slave. It wasn't posthumous. She passed from this world in 1908. She wasn't allowed in the temple even for this odd sealing, so a nice white woman stood in proxy for her while she awaited news of it being completed outside the house of the Lord. Which begs the question: if proxy work can be done for living souls, why not baptize the whole population of the world systematically in our temples? We could claim a membership of 7 billion in no time!
*** that awkward moment when you realize you are using the inclusive "we" for a group you no longer really consider yourself a part of. 🤔

I loved this episode. It is so refreshing to hear you guys answer back to the nonsense thinking that always bothered me growing up in the Church!! Constructive feedback: please stop calling cult thinking "the Muslim paradigm." Worldwide, something like 1.7 billion people identify as Muslim. There are lots of cults of various sizes within that, just like there are lots of cults of various scales under the Christian header. But as you know, that's not all that's there. There are also whole Muslim communities and organizations working from a liberal, leftist, queer-affirming, exploration-welcoming place. (It helps that Islam doesn't have a central governing body that can excommunicate people lol.) You talked about the scientific method - the process of coming up with a hypothesis and testing it with experiments to derive new truth - and guess what? The philosopher-scientist credited with the modern scientific method was Muslim. His name was Abu Ali al-Hassan ibn al-Hassan ibn al-Haytham, or Ibn Haytham. His "Muslim perspective" looked like praying for forgiveness for any inaccuracy in his reporting of his scientific results.

What he describes as the method to seek truth sounds so convoluted and mind spinning, it reminds me of a labyrinth. There's so much confusion and mind spinning that even a little child could throw their hands up and say OK FINE I BELIEVE! Because that's the only acceptable 'right answer.' If you don't get that right answer, YOU are the problem, NOT the church or it's leaders.
    All roads lead to
    1.believing it's true, or
    2. you are bad and wrong.
    Those are your choices.
It's the equation for mind fuckery, there's nothing simple about it, contrary to what they claim!
You must put your brain in a blender, set it to clusterfuck, and when you arrive, you're there.
But how is any of this so simple that a child could understand??
And since when, did EVIDENCE not matter, and in fact be contraindicated, in any search for truth where truth is the actual quest?
If a con man came to town, and wanted people to believe his lies, i think this is the exact mental trickery he would employ to sell his box of snake oil or card tricks, or magic show, or robbery.
This whole plot is played out in the musical 'The Music Man.'
You didn't know you needed what they are selling before they came to town, and they walk away the rich ones, even tho their own temple ceremony condemns anyone who gives the gospel in exchange for money. But ain't nobody getting in to the LDS church without first putting up their 10% interest on every penny they get, and making payments for EVER.
    Even
longer than Scientology's billion year contract.
The 100 billion dollar power differential is enough to get people to believe you've got something that works!

Sorry, don't think I can support Jimmy Snow. He got really ableist with the gabbie hanna situation, and how he handled it I felt kinda sucked and lacked accountability.
Plus he just kind of makes fun of people while saying he just cares about what's true. Which to me is short sighted and an obvious lie. Science is more wobbly than he seems to think. Don't get me wrong it's stellar, but we can always improve.

12:04 what’s that certain sure evidence that shows it’s not truth? Specifically which fact?

Tanner! My girlfriend and I got jumped by two bicycle-borne aspiring Saints this morning as we were walking in my neighborhood (girls, a first for me), and I'm afraid I mentioned your name. I was nice, but I stuck to the open truth of the history of the LDS Church (Smith was a swindler, he was sued over his treasure racket and the court papers still exist) and landed some body blows ("There is a LOT of misinformation out there about the Church", the alpha Saint responded) but was unable to deprogram either of the emissionaries, and think that a little much to ask. I got a laugh when I said the Prophet was just talking out of his hat, then followed up with the story of the divination stone, an artifact the LDS Church possesses and acknowledges. I also pressed the issue of polygamy ("That was back then") and the Divine Mandate for the sexual abuse of children the Prophet possessed, saying that at the heart of every cult was some dude tryin' to get him some... when at last I wore out my welcome by declaring that Jesus is bu-----t, so we might as well believe anything, the proselytizers made to leave us, but I blurted out, "TH-cam! Zelph on the Shelf! Say hi to Tanner Gilliland for me! We're old friends." I hope I didn't get you in trouble with the Danites... it was all too da---d funny! Extend my best to Miss Shelley! Moo-hoo-hah-hah-hah!!!

Have you guys looked in to the esoteric and biblical research that shows the Yahweh was an ancient wind deity. May I suggest the TH-cam channel Esoterica.

Can we not use a name that was intentionally allowed to be forgotten by the people who used it because it's too holy to say? It's different than just being irreverent.

the super obvious things about all religions that when ever looked at slightly Should make anyone who cares about truth know everything about religions is rotten... THE MONEY if there's a God then why does he want money and why does he want it from the poorest slice of people the ones who don't have it to give and already pay more then the rich in everyday? what is it the God wants that money is needed to do? money has no value to a good.. how would some payment of a percentage of income be of any use to a God? doesn't the whole concept just remind u of paying taxes to a ruler? except all rulers are human? there's only one way for a human to pretend he's a God and its with money...so where does all the money go? is there a magic atm that turns it into something a God wants but can create? and the final and biggest question... if your God wants and demands money how I'd he anything different then a mob boss? a theft or at best case a grifter...

At 31:52, you hit upon the one unspeakable truth, that God and Satan are the same guy. In the Sufi schools of the Orient they teach you this, but only at the higher levels. I think I just saved you a bunch of money...

Not your best hair cut, Tanner. You could pass for a high schooler with it. If you weren't so damned smart. But then, who am I to cast aspersions? I wish I had hair to cut!
