Yanis Varoufakis & Slavoj Zizek | Indigo Festival 2021

  • Yanis Varoufakis is a top economist who was at the forefront of international media attention as Minister of Finance in the Syriza government in Greece. Today, he leads the left-wing pan-European political movement DIEM. The conversation with Varoufakis, led by Slavoj Žižek, will be far from a polite exchange of opinions by two like minded colleagues. It will address the issues faced by today’s Left.
Did the Syriza government stand any chance of surviving without capitulating under the pressure by the European Union? What are the real potentials of the radical left today? How has global capitalism changed due to the pandemic? Will capitalism manage to cope with the ecological crisis?
This event is part of the Indigo festival.

The situation regarding shares is even worse than Varoufakis describes in that a share is not actually a form of ownership -- meaning that while shareholders enjoy profits and are able to exercise (high level) control over the corporation, they are not similarly personally responsible for any liabilities and losses the corporation incurs. It is the corporation as a legal person in itself that is responsible -- and hence shields the shareholders.

I met a Greek couple a few days ago in Rome. They were surprised that I know somewhat about Greek politics and its current difficult situation. Then I mentioned Yanis. They weren't flattered, started with “Ah, that Crete born guy" and processed saying how he basically is a liar back when he was in the office. Tried to reason with them in Yanis defense with the information I've got from his speeches and books. Did not work. They end up saying, he is persuasive. Well, in the end we stopped talking policits and started enjoying the beauty of the eternal city.

    • @eduardosp2024
      @eduardosp2024 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

I wouldn't argue that we've actually arrived at this technofeudalist model. But his argument seems to be that injections of cash from a central bank has or will supersede the profit motive; that social media platforms monetizing data have or will supersede traditional workplaces; that these monopolized online spaces have or will replace markets; and that these dynamics resemble fiefdoms through which stagnant peasants had their crops extracted as a matter of course.

Technofeudalism Is a very specific concept. Oligarchy Is a system of government, while he Is talking about how now everything happens via online platforms that control most of the transactions and the informations that happen in the world, and these platforms are owned by a few members of society. Wat he's saying is that the supposed contradictions that were meant to destroy capitalism are now so prevalent that we might as well refer to it as a new system. Techno-feudalism has superseded the contradictions between profit and workers, especially on a platform like facebook or youtube where we don't even recognise ourselves as working for these companies... However, if you were to put that rhetoric to one side and actually interrogate the US's "benevolent dominance" (what an enormous oxymoron) over the last century, you'd soon realise that it perfectly fits the definition of an imperialist power. How else would you appraise US intervention in Korea, Vietnam, Cambodia, Grenada, Afghanistan, Iraq, etc? If the US was always trying to foster peace and independence then what do you make of the CIA's constant subversion and terrorism in Central and South America (and everywhere else for that matter)? The fact is that the US is the greatest historical example of a global hegemon and has used its vast economic and technological resources to project its power. So called peace and independence were fostered when they aligned with US financial and foreign policy interests and crushed when they didn't. I'm not naïve about China's power or their objectives but if your focus, paranoia and anger is directed mainly at them when the turmoil that we are increasingly experiencing has evolved out of the capitalist system that was created and aggressively enforced by the west then you are deeply indoctrinated. Now that there is a new rising power and US pre-eminence is waning nationalists want to bang the drum and start a new Cold War with another "evil empire". If the last hundred years of US hegemony is an accurate guide then we should be sceptical of foreign policy that attempts the large scale containment of another great power while veiling aggressive interventions under the banner of "liberation" or "freedom".

I disagree with one point Varoufakis made about China: About how China has never been imperialist. I assume he meant "China under the CCP" and not "China historical (which I'll address quickly). China (historical empire) is actually the world's most successful imperialist power. So successful that it is the only empire that "survived". Remember that the Chinese empire (during the Qin and Han empire) basically consisted of the land between the Yangtze and Yellow river, a comparatively small area to what they control now. The rest was conquered, assimilated and inducted into the Chinese empire fully.
Its true that the Communist in China have not been imperialist but that is myopic. That is mostly because China during the 20th century was weak. That isn't really the case now. Many of China's actions now suggest they wish (foreign policy wise) to return that sort of "Middle Kingdom" hegemony of having the various satellite states (Vietnam, Korea, Japan) under their control. But we'll see.

I share your disagreement with Yanis's point about China's imperial past, the only issue I find in your analysis is that seeing China's CCP history as lacking imperial conquest and continued subjugation would be incomplete. In its early years, the Western provinces, Tibet, Xinjiang, were annexed and the local cultures are still being repressed. For example, recently they made Mandarin the mandatory language. China's approach gives me strong echoes of how Russian imperialism simply rebranded itself with the hammer and sickle to spread Moscow's hegemony. Han supremacy is a real problem that extends beyond China, if youve ever been to the region you know the extent of racism and expectations towards homogeneity that are applied. There are direct parallels that can be made between CCP China and Russification policies
China 1) has a history of imperial conquest and 2) is expressing the deisre to do it again with Taiwan.
I frankly cant foresee if the international community allows the subjugation of a democratic people.

It was and remains a systemic - not individual - thing, driven by both forces of capital and the governments shackled to it. Vaguely saying "Westerners" are guilty of it trivializes the problem and focuses on moral blame of people living in the West, instead of the parasitic class that has developed on top of it, interests of which are vastly different than the interests of majority of Westerners. A random person on the internet saying that China has imperialist tendencies and engages in debt slavery with African countries, - not even mentioning Uyghurs, Tibet, sweatshop capitalism etc. - is not a person responsible for colonialism in any shape or form. • @Iamallwaysright1

@7Dnein according to Merriam Webster: "Definition of mythology
      1: an allegorical narrative
2: a body of myths: such as
a: the myths dealing with the gods, demigods, and legendary heroes of a particular people
b: MYTHOS sense 2cold war mythology
3: a branch of knowledge that deals with myth
4: a popular belief or assumption that has grown up around someone or something"
In any of the above definitions, there is no single one group of people/country/civilization that "invented" mythology, even in your interpretation of the word, and especially not the greeks who were the first. While ancient Greek cities have their set of contributions to humanity that deserve credit and recognition, this over-glorification of the greek civilization exclusively and single-handedly is rooted in European supremacy, nationalism, and it purposefully overshadows other civilizations, not simply those in Europe, but also older civilizations like Hitites, Summerians, Egyptians, Indian and Chinese ones etc.
There is no space for nationalism in leftism. As a famous person, it is especially crucial that he does not propagate this kind of propaganda. The average American thinks all human civilizations started with the Greeks. Poor education system, sure, but we keep promoting this fetishism in the mainstream media/culture etc.
