Man this game and Ys X coming out at the same time. We RPG fans are feasting well this month and Mario + Luigi and Dragon Quest 3 next month…I need more time. Cheers mate.
I've seen Ys for years and have yet played a single one. I just never knew if they were connected and if I needed to play ever since one to know what's going on or if each were stand alone and It didn't matter. So I just never played them. lol
I'd like to track this one down on physical, I love the romancing saga series! The 3D graphics really add a sense of scale and weight to the combat and exploration... cant wait to give this a go!!
Yes the timeline is new to the remake and also turn order as a result changes quite a bit because in the original, as in most SaGa games you choose all 5 party members orders at the start of the round and then see the whole round play out. The new system feels very different and personally I much prefer this timeline system it's a lot more engaging. Abilities are also completely new to this remake and I'm sad that no reviewer mention them. It's a very interesting new feature that wasn't communicated on at all by the Devs which is very strange and it seems from what I've seen to open up a lot the customisation options which is amazing.
The SaGa series has it's roots in Final Fantasy II, which hadn't any traditional level ups either. Instead, you gain stats and increase profiency in weapons, shields, magic and some other statistics.
I love that nearly the entire series is available on Switch now, but I REALLY wish that we'd gotten that SaGa Frontier 2 Remaster before this since it's the last GOOD game in the series that's not on Switch yet, they've been teasing us with it for over 3 years, and RS2 was already released on Switch prior to this...
@@JohnnyProctor9 maybe we'll get a remake instead. square enix seems into that with a lot of their franchises. now if only capcom would do the same for breath of fire...
@Reilith - If they do, I hope that they build the Go! Go! Digger PocketStation mini game into it...because using it to grind for items added a whole new dimension of fun to the game after I got a PocketStation!
I'm so excited for this. Got it pre-ordered. SaGa series has been on one in recent years and I'm here for it. Edit to add: LP has been a thing since SaGa 1/Final Fantasy Legend. It didn't start in RS2.
This remake is a very unique case, a bit like trials of mana to be honest. They went the extra mile to revitalise an old game that was almost too ambitious for its time. It's really exciting to see old gems that were inaccessible to most of the world with a lot of improvements and new mechanics. I wish Final Fantasy 7 had a similar treatment honestly.
@sombrego2260 - I wasn't a fan of Trials...they took out one of the best features, the multiplayer to "modernize" it. Lost more than it gained IMO...FF7 remake was even worse, turning it into an ARPG.
Can't wait till Friday when I get to pick up my copy and play this all weekend. The demo was awesome and also it brought back so many memories of me playing the original and how much I loved it.
Game looks great! Not going to lie was kinda hoping it was going to pass me by because this year has had so many fantastic but long RPG's but looks like another one is being added to the list!
This is my first time playing a SaGa game but I've played every single mainline DQ game to date. I just finished DQ Builders 2 and am loving RS2 remake!
Bought this one blind today, never played it or investigated it until today. Played SaGa Frontier a lot as a kid, I think I’m going to revisit that and the rest of this series on Switch.
You got me intrigued when you mentioned the Skeletor-like vibe of the villains! This game looks really great, I never played any of this series, the succession mechanic sounds very interesting
Great review I just wished you would put the price up on screen as I always have to go into the market and find out if I can afford it lol. But loved the review mate and the channel is easily the best on TH-cam.
Romancing SaGa 2 is a CLASSIC RPG! I remember it and its final boss music in particular quite fondly, and I'm sure this remake is fun as well. Still, I may prefer the original out of nostalgia.
I wish they'd remaster the DS remakes of SaGa 1-3, they looked terrific and I loved the Gameboy originals. And I'm really surprised they seem hell bent on doing anything but SaGa Frontier 2. That's literally the only one that ever came out in Europe so to me it's the biggest one...
Never cared much for the Saga series but im glad to see it getti g some love. Maybe i will check this out on sale to see if maybe the upgrades can make me love it.
Had a quick look at the PS5 version and yeah - there’s definitely a graphics difference. I always struggle here because I much prefer the Switch but if the graphics are that much better, should I get it on PS5 instead?
The fighting mechanics feels like Octopath has merged with RSaga. Always loved RSaga2 and 3 back in the SNES days, wish it would actually use Octopath's 2dHD style as well though
Already preordered this and it’s on the way ! Woo hoo Ys x, this , Mario and Luigi brother ship and dragon quest 3 damn we are eating well us rpg guys thank you 😄
SwitchUp reviews gets a 20/20. Id highly recommend giving this channel a go if you haven't yet. Please remember to leave a like and subscribe. Until next time Cheers! Great review as always guys!
Thanks for the review gents! I played the demo (two hours that carries you through until the first inheritance of the story) and was on the fence. That's the issues with a short demo of an rpg. Make it too short and you can't show your audience all your unique mechanics. Like, the game ends with an inheritance and basically says "look at this super cool mechanic! Wanna know exactly what happened to your MC? Buy the full game!"
Enjoyed the demo, will get this when I've got more time available to devote to it. Don't want it to sit in my backlog waiting to be played, I'll just forget about it and play something else.
I finally played the demo and yes I like this game enough for me to move it to my to buy list. The visuals not as good as other jrpgs that I like (always compare it to Xenoblade series) but still within my acceptable level. The bgm music is, after a while annoys me that I went to turn it off in my settings during my demo playthrough 😂.
Yes, however that character doesn't come into play until later. You start at the beginning of the blood line first. You do get to choose other characters to take over on the way and these are a choice of male and female characters.
Nointy noindy free, guv. Makes me miss my varied Brit teammates... The 30fps on Switch is a shame but not unexpected. I get 60fps on my Deck at 1080p with dynamic resolution. I'd say play it any way you can!
Love the look of this... I'm a fairly recent convert to JRPGs (The Mana remake was GREAT!) Glad there's no random encounters... I've been playing Octopath 2 and I got SO sick of them Seemed like every 30 seconds I got forced into a 5 minute battle! I want to explore dammit!
For the inheritance system, do you get random characters to pick from each time you go to a new generation or do you get the same set each time you get to a particular generation?
Why does none of the reviewers of that game seem to want to use their overdrive? Guys it's crazy strong, cost 0 BP and recharge so quickly you should be spamming it. You even get smart targeting included and more xp if you finish the fight with one. And they always have insane silly names like HardBall
My biggest thing about this game is how good it looks on the switch. It really shows what good optimization can do. Really wish DQXI got the same treatment.
how is it that the switch still keeps getting all these must have games? My wallet can't handle this, lol. Not to mention I don't have time for all these games.
This is all well and good, but where's the SaGa Frontier 2 Remaster that we've been waiting for? This is a remake of the WORST game in the Romancing SaGa Super Famicom series, and which waa already available on Switch!
Does anyone know if enemies get tougher the more you fight/level up? It was a thing with the snes versions of RS, which made grinding completely pointless and counterintuitive
I just can’t get into the saga games. I tried three times with that minstrel one, even. I can’t put my finger on it. It’s like they don’t have something that other jrpgs have
Just a note on the visuals, this game is available on ps5 aswell, and I saw a video ad on instagram that showed footage that ran smoother and the colour were more vibrant than the demo I played on switch, so I suspect the washed out colours and slow texture loads are a concession to get it running on switch. I'd still prefer the switch version though just for the handheld utility!

Hey Glen I just wanted to say that I love it when you give us a deep dive into the mechanics of a game! I always appreciate it!

Wow, pretty high review for this one. Just bought it! Thanks for your excellent videos guys!!
Good review but looping the same music every few second for the entire video was probably not the best ideas. It kinda drove me nuts lol
This game is so cool.
The thing is swaping party members is extremely easier in this remake compared the headache that was the original 😂
Oh man! I still want to give the original another go, though. Glen
As I’m in the New Audience camp all I can say is this looks fantastic! An essential physical I think, definitely one for the collection! 🙂
What a time to be alive with all these great JRPG remakes.. 🙌
I'll pass on this for now until after they get us that SaGa Frontier 2 Remaster that they've been promising us for YEARS!

I admit that the game looks gorgeous, but I'm not a big fan of SaGa series because literally every game I tried dissapointed me in some way...
I dont understand when the generations switch. Is it just when you reach a certain part in the story?
Yes. Completing certain quests will move the story to the next generation.
Definitely getting this one, been very excited for it since I tried the demo out.
Another cool RPG from Square Enix!
I don’t see the Switch running this type of game smoothly at all. Is this game also out for the PS4/PS5 ?
Yeah, there is a PS5 version, not sure about PS4 though.
how is it that the switch still keeps getting all these must have games? My wallet can't handle this, lol. Not to mention I don't have time for all these games.
Ooooh is there a path of pain like section in this game?
Nintendo Romancing us with all these great games at the end of the Switch's life-cycle. Good grief! My backlog has grown.
The Switch is a haven of JRPGs. Shame I only have one life, so I can't play them all.
So, only MainCharacter/King changes and passes stats to someone, but rest of party members live forever through game (if you keep them alive)?
This is all well and good, but where's the SaGa Frontier 2 Remaster that we've been waiting for? This is a remake of the WORST game in the Romancing SaGa Super Famicom series, and which waa already available on Switch!
„Saga: Emerald Beyond“ had very blurry graphics, slow menus and lots of fps stutter on the switch.
How is this one holding up technically?
Seems fine. Aside from the assets loading in late during cutscenes.
