I’m 30+ hrs in. This game is a ton of fun. I was looking for a JRPG to really scratch my itch and this bad boy hits the spot. All the gameplay shown on this video is only from the first few hours. The skills and abilities have some really cool animations as you level/glimmer new abilities. The only downside to this game so far is that there isn’t a ton of attachment to your characters as they’re more like vessels for abilities as you’ll go through several time skips. The story of the seven is really the only character development you get. With that being said you unlock a ton of character types to fight alongside you , offering a variety of strategies/ formations. Another big upside is getting to approach the quests in almost any order you’d like. I was surprised by some of the game mechanics, like the empire expansion and town management as I just don’t remember games having those features in the early 90s. This game has reinvigorated my love for JRPGS and now I’ve been scouring eShops and TH-cam reviews for the next JRPG to play once this game comes to its inevitable end. Thanks for the banger Square Enix. (Please forgive my grammar)
Man this game and Ys X coming out at the same time. We RPG fans are feasting well this month and Mario + Luigi and Dragon Quest 3 next month…I need more time. Cheers mate.
Yes the timeline is new to the remake and also turn order as a result changes quite a bit because in the original, as in most SaGa games you choose all 5 party members orders at the start of the round and then see the whole round play out. The new system feels very different and personally I much prefer this timeline system it's a lot more engaging. Abilities are also completely new to this remake and I'm sad that no reviewer mention them. It's a very interesting new feature that wasn't communicated on at all by the Devs which is very strange and it seems from what I've seen to open up a lot the customisation options which is amazing.
I'd like to track this one down on physical, I love the romancing saga series! The 3D graphics really add a sense of scale and weight to the combat and exploration... cant wait to give this a go!!
I love that nearly the entire series is available on Switch now, but I REALLY wish that we'd gotten that SaGa Frontier 2 Remaster before this since it's the last GOOD game in the series that's not on Switch yet, they've been teasing us with it for over 3 years, and RS2 was already released on Switch prior to this...
@@JohnnyProctor9 maybe we'll get a remake instead. square enix seems into that with a lot of their franchises. now if only capcom would do the same for breath of fire...
@Reilith - If they do, I hope that they build the Go! Go! Digger PocketStation mini game into it...because using it to grind for items added a whole new dimension of fun to the game after I got a PocketStation!
The SaGa series has it's roots in Final Fantasy II, which hadn't any traditional level ups either. Instead, you gain stats and increase profiency in weapons, shields, magic and some other statistics.
This remake is a very unique case, a bit like trials of mana to be honest. They went the extra mile to revitalise an old game that was almost too ambitious for its time. It's really exciting to see old gems that were inaccessible to most of the world with a lot of improvements and new mechanics. I wish Final Fantasy 7 had a similar treatment honestly.
@sombrego2260 - I wasn't a fan of Trials...they took out one of the best features, the multiplayer to "modernize" it. Lost more than it gained IMO...FF7 remake was even worse, turning it into an ARPG.
This is my first time playing a SaGa game but I've played every single mainline DQ game to date. I just finished DQ Builders 2 and am loving RS2 remake!
I'm so excited for this. Got it pre-ordered. SaGa series has been on one in recent years and I'm here for it. Edit to add: LP has been a thing since SaGa 1/Final Fantasy Legend. It didn't start in RS2.
Game looks great! Not going to lie was kinda hoping it was going to pass me by because this year has had so many fantastic but long RPG's but looks like another one is being added to the list!
I played that re-release so much a few years back, and I really loved the game but it was definitly HARD. Especially if you have shiny alternatives available but it's easily in my top 5 most enjoyable RPG's. It was hard and frustrating but it's definitly one that always stood out at the abck of my mind. Very happy with this shiny upgrade :D
Can't wait till Friday when I get to pick up my copy and play this all weekend. The demo was awesome and also it brought back so many memories of me playing the original and how much I loved it.
Bought this one blind today, never played it or investigated it until today. Played SaGa Frontier a lot as a kid, I think I’m going to revisit that and the rest of this series on Switch.
For the inheritance system, do you get random characters to pick from each time you go to a new generation or do you get the same set each time you get to a particular generation?
You got me intrigued when you mentioned the Skeletor-like vibe of the villains! This game looks really great, I never played any of this series, the succession mechanic sounds very interesting
Never cared much for the Saga series but im glad to see it getti g some love. Maybe i will check this out on sale to see if maybe the upgrades can make me love it.
Great review I just wished you would put the price up on screen as I always have to go into the market and find out if I can afford it lol. But loved the review mate and the channel is easily the best on TH-cam.
I wish they'd remaster the DS remakes of SaGa 1-3, they looked terrific and I loved the Gameboy originals. And I'm really surprised they seem hell bent on doing anything but SaGa Frontier 2. That's literally the only one that ever came out in Europe so to me it's the biggest one...
The fighting mechanics feels like Octopath has merged with RSaga. Always loved RSaga2 and 3 back in the SNES days, wish it would actually use Octopath's 2dHD style as well though
Had a quick look at the PS5 version and yeah - there’s definitely a graphics difference. I always struggle here because I much prefer the Switch but if the graphics are that much better, should I get it on PS5 instead?

Does anyone know if enemies get tougher the more you fight/level up? It was a thing with the snes versions of RS, which made grinding completely pointless and counterintuitive
I finally played the demo and yes I like this game enough for me to move it to my to buy list. The visuals not as good as other jrpgs that I like (always compare it to Xenoblade series) but still within my acceptable level. The bgm music is, after a while annoys me that I went to turn it off in my settings during my demo playthrough 😂.

Sounds like a pretty sound game. I'm glad the Switch version is apparently quite decent. I'm gettings this down the line, since Ys X is my priority.
