Excellent documentary. The fact 99% of it is information directly from the mouth's of Yakuza members themselves and those closest to them really lends credit to this. Very well done and thank you for producing it.

Evening, just come across your post and it's a interesting viewing. I have always been interested in the History, it was really good that someone was talking about the Edo period quickly!!! Yes I do believe that we should have a open mind about what we hear and read .

So funny to see Oyabun Tanaka stating "I hate drugs...blablabla..", the Mastuba Kai was probably the most deeply involved Yakuza organization in the Kanto region, in the import and distribution of Kakuseizai. Some high ranking members from Korean descent, had direct business connection and contacts with the North Korean office Office 39. The North Korean fushin-sen cases, are representative of these connections.

I was once in Kichijoji park during Hanami, and met some Yakuza doing exactly what they are doing in the park there. They gave me food, and drink and I stayed with them most of the night. I was scared sh*tless but they were okay with me on the night. Wouldn't like to socialise with them as a regular thing though.

I have ALWAYS admired the Japanese culture. And how disciplined, educated, and orderly they are. Perhaps at one time the Yakuza did represent an organization for helping those in need or with crime related issues. Such as the modern police do today. However, when you help those in need you DO NOT ask for something in return. And that is where the Yakuza started gaining a bad reputation just like any other mob related organization. For example, during another documentary i saw here on TH-cam. A former Yakuza member stated that during the 2011 Fukushima disaster the Yakuza were the first on scene to help the people. Even before the police and other aid. I thought that's great until later on this former member stated they asked for re-payment from the folks they aided. And that's where i disagree with them. If you do something to help someone in need you DO NOT ask for any form of compensation. And go so far as to threaten there lives etc...

I'm no expert, but I feel like the Yakuza basically went the same way as the American Italian mob.
Both have dwindled to what seems like all-time historic lows. Fraction of the power, fraction of the membership. And significantly tougher/harsher laws to maneuver around.

I have to say i'm nearly finished watching this documentary on the secretive life of the Yakuza. And i have to say it was VERY VERY well produced. What i learned from this is Yakuza is about a code of HONOR and upholding that at every level. Respecting those ahead of you and if you make mistakes knowing when to admit and make up for them. I don't agree with the violence aspects the killing and chopping off of one's fingers. But everything else about them i can totally respect as it's like a brotherhood/family. If they did away with these practices of killing and mutilating yourself. They probably wouldn't have got as bad a reputation as they've built up over the years.

Former head of the Public Security Intelligence Bureau says "60% of Yakuza are Dowa, 30% are Zainichi Koreans." Sep 11, 2011 According to government statistics from 1993, there are a total of about 1 million people in some 4,000 districts throughout Japan. The Buraku Liberation League estimates that nearly 3 million people live in about 6,000 districts, and "zainichi Koreans" are said to number about 650,000. In addition, if naturalized citizens, their descendants, and children born of marriages with Japanese nationals (Japanese nationality) are included, the number is said to exceed 2 million.

If you're obviously looking like "So called Gaijin". You are seen as just Tattoo fan. but please I advise you to maintain your friendly attitude always this will help you at anything just to avoid some people's stereotype negativeness on Wabori. In case,If your tattoo got unintentional stand off or malicious attention from local thugs or real Yakuza. explain them polightly that you're a big fan of Wabori and have respect of it. then they will understand you.

You will have no particular problems with tattoos nowadays, even with neo Japanese tats. There is actually a trend right now amongst young Japanese men, with neo Japanese tattoos. A real Yakuza is not going to bother you, with a tattoo issue. These guys have better things to do. Remember one thing, in Japan, there are 3 types of tattoos. 1) Irezumi (tattoos wore by members or associates of organized crime syndicates). 2) Iremono ( tattoos wore by individuals who love Japanese traditional culture). 3)
What is being called "point tattoos". A point tattoo is a tattoo which is made by electronic tattoo machine, as opposed to "tebori", the traditional Japanese method of hand tattooing using a slender bamboo or metal tool, with a needle grouping attached to the tip. However, some places may deny you access to specific facilities such as swimming pool, sauna etc..., or they may require you to hide your tats. As a foreigner, Japanese will be more tolerant of your tattoos than with Japanese.

@@Gameboypxht What are you talking about?. Japanese cops won't follow or act upon a gaijin who wear tattoos. Most Japanese understand that tattoos have a totally different context in the West, so do the Japanese cops. I have been living in Japan for more than 34 years, and never heard of a gaijin who was harassed by Japanese cops for wearing tattoos As for "affiliates or associates" who may potentially press a gaijin for wearing tattoos, this is fantasy. I have a full back Tebori iremono (Japanese traditional hand tattoo), and the only times Yakuzas bothered to ask about my tattoos, was on a purely friendly curiosity basis. They only asked me who was my tattoo master, how much did it cost, and how long did it take?. Japanese tattoo are not meant to be displayed, especially Tebori, except for special occasions anyway...

At the beginning of the video, he mentioned that he had rented a spacious office for free, but of course it would not be free all the time, and it was hard to believe that an elderly man who had never had any proper business experience with the yakuza could do business in the future. At the end of the video, as expected, his business soon came to an end. The people who were initially close to him would have left. Generally speaking, when he was drinking and drinking in his office, he wasn't going to take it seriously.
