NUTCRACKER Grand Pas de Deux - Melissa Hayden and Edward Villella

  • Filmed in Munich in the mid 1960's, this is a very unusual and unique version of the Nutcracker Act II Pas de Deux danced by two of the NYC Ballet's greatest stars in their prime...and it's not the Balanchine one! The Pas starts with the traditional choreography by Lev Ivanov; then in the middle switches to the Balanchine version, and back to Ivanov for the end. Same thing happens in Hayden;s variation. Not sure who came up with Villella's variation and their Coda. Still, it's shows clearly both of their techniques and charisma.

    Magnificent! I consider myself very lucky to have seen both Melissa Hayden, and Edward Villella perform when I was a child.

    She looks so beautiful in her crown. He looks so handsome. His dancing is wonderful. The syncopated, off-setting tour jetes are incredible. That piece of the choreography is the best I've seen.

    They were magnificent! Perfection for their times. How wonderful to have been a child and witnessed this first hand. I was 5 years old in 1959 when I saw The Nutckracker for the first time. It was because of a performance like this that I followerd my girlhood passion and went on to be a student at S.A.B. How humbly grateful I am to these two legends of ballet for their inspiation. My teen years were magical.

    The second leap Villella takes at 6:13 is extraordinary both for speed and elevation. There is a rhythm and freedom to the way he moved here that I can see why his dancing thrilled audiences. I wish there was more video of his better performances like this.

    Jacques d’Amboise said the Eddie Vilela was the dancer who most approached Baryshnikov in dancing personality. I can see here what he meant.

    I must say I prefer the 60's ballet over the current. The musical interpretation is spot on, not like now. The dancers' precision and movement are much nicer. I think Edward Villella is underrated and wow he's good. So is Melissa Hayden. Beautiful to watch.

    • @jcliff26

      First time I’ve heard Villella was “underrated.” He was the biggest male star in ballet for awhile and certainly the biggest one in America. A Legend really. I agree on their musicality, etc. Now it’s all about the tricks.

    • @blktauna
      @blktauna 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jcliff26 lol I mean under rated now. I remember him when he was still dancing and he was properly acclaimed. I also agree about now being tricks, its like ice skating. Hopefully that trend will shift to return to musicality. Happy Christmas 🎄

    Ottima la fibrillazione dei passi sulle punte in eundo velocissimo della ballerina .Ottimi quelli che con un mio neologismo mi piace chiamare convoli aerei ed elanisti della ballerina ottimamente indotti e tenuti dal partner. Ottimo il mantenimento della figuralita ' di posa anche in fase esecutiva. IMPRESSIONE astante e praesens di facilità esecutiva d'acchito per entrambi. MOLTO BRAVI.BIGHIN GIULIO RENZO

    John, your videos are extraordinary and allow the memory of what I knew from my training to remain vibrant. I studied with Millie for many years and it is so terrific to see her here. But I think we often forget what risk takers they were. It is evident here! Thank you for your posts, and your dancing.

    I actually have this Nutcracker on VHS tape. (Bought it because it has Patti McBride in it...And it's very pleasant to watch.) Given a choice between flashy extensions and perfect technical execution but dry artistry and limited interest in the music, or less flashy physicality and a true connection to the music and organic artistic expression, I'll take the latter every time.

    @Don John Clifford, Yes I read your notes and should have been clear in saying that the Petipa steps stand out over Balanchines. So great to discover your channel You always stood out at NYCB . You had mystery in your performances, some inner monologue, thoughts no matter how abstract the ballet. AND of course your man of steel blue/black hair!!! You are indeed ballet royalty.

    Dancers of this time seem stiff and not flexible at all compared w/ today (2019) when females generally do splits each time they kick. Older ballets both dancers look heavier. Is that just the video? Well this is 50 yrs ago plus.
