  • A live performance from the mid 1960's of the electric Patricia McBride and Edward Villella in one of their signature roles. Not even Baryshnikov (or anyone else...including me) could match Villella's speed and elevation in this most demanding role. A veritable tour-de-force.

For me, Villella was perfect for Tarantella. saying that Baryshnikov was better in it because of his classical purity shows that you don't have a sense of who this character is. I've seen both men (as well as several others) perform this piece live, and no one was as exciting as Villella.

Enjoying watching your Tarantella on TH-cam. I was recently told by a relative that you are my farther's 4th cousin. I was so excited to here that because I am a student at Boston Ballet and I am 8 years old and I am turning 9 on August 29th. I would love to meet you and my parents will take me to wherever you are or if you come to Boston we can have a family reunion.

Petula's Parade That’s interesting but I’m pretty sure I don’t have any relatives except my step sister.

Absolutely Villella had this character, and Baryshnikov did not. I know that an inspiring mentor like Balanchine must have given both Patty McBride and Villella the extra excitement they both displayed. She is even more vibrant than in the Presidential performance, and Villella is unequaled.

Well. I wasn’t chopped liver in it. And Balanchine kept me in it until I left the company.

imo comparing baryshnikov with villella is not possible baryshnikov was a perfect dancer from a stylistic point of wiew the perfection of his dancing was imo superior also to his outstanding virtuosity ,on the contrary when l watch mr villella dancing really sometime l can't undrestand what was he doing to not speack about the weird awful use of his upper body ( sometime l wonder if he knew he had an upper body) l saw you dancing and l rate your dancing much better from point of wiew style and accademic purity than villella's.

Vilella himself has said that "Balanchine saw in him that physically gifted guy who could run, get in a street fight and be fast." Academic purity is a thing he was as far from as we are from the moon. But his raw hooligan style worked for Tarantella, Rubies and such. Then Baryshnikov came and owned them for he was not only a virtuoso but also had sense of style, wit and artistry.

Ivelina Pancheva misha was so good that could dance evrything at the best ,but l had seen him previously in main classics and vastly prefered

l sincearly consider his raw holigan style only lacks of cleaness and accademic elegance

Oh yes, by all means lets treat two great artists like entries in a pie baking contest at a county fair by comparing them to each other. SHEESH!

Thank you so much for posting this video, John Clifford! It's always a pleasure to see Patricia McBride and Edward Villella, clips of them are so very rare for the general public (like me).

Nobody did it better than these two. They had real rapport with each other onstage. Villella's version has a real earthy quality that hasn't been matched in some other interpreters of the role. Patricia McBride could do anything you threw at her and make it look like a breeze. No Problem, watch this!

I love the mad-hatter abandon of Eddie! Was this the performance when he was in excruciating pain?

I must agree with pediatrapaola that the point of comparing Baryshnikov and Villella in this role stops at Villella's speed and elevation. Misha is fabulous in Tarantella - incredibly fast, stylish, witty and delicious, as is McBride. I love watching it. Maybe EV is faster but I agree that here he's really throwing himself around. In EV's autobiography he said that Misha never attained the speed demanded by Balanchine ballets. I thought Misha was a great Prodigal even though I know Villella owned this role, a great Apollo, Who Cares . Thank you for posting this!

In prodigral son there is no speed. Obviosly McBride and Villella are the bests, unsurpassed. And I must say; Baryshnikov is not easy and swinging enough in who cares. Have you ever seen Kumakawa in push came to shove? Also it is obvious Barayshnikov was a perfect classical dancer.
