    Just casting my vote for the Black Magic app tutorial.

      I love the blackmagic app.. but. if you have no intention of adding any accessories to your phone (nd or any type of filters) it’s kind of useless. If I’m adding any ND to my phone might as well use my Sony/ lumix/fuji

    • @eriksopracasa3449
      @eriksopracasa3449 ปีที่แล้ว

      Blackmagic is doing such an amazing job with DaVinci Resolve and now the camera app. Filmic pro was by far a leader in the mobile filmmaking apps but they made a big mistake selling the company and allowing for a subscription based model. Let’s go Blackmagic!

      @@antovega2 I don't find it useless. It allows me to capture log in a more reasonable (smaller) format than ProRes. I can also lock white balance while recording or for a sequence of shots so I don't have to mess around to fix the colour later, focus manually, select the lens rather than have the camera app decide which to use and just crop in and I can see useful things on the display like a histogram, proper tilt meter and LUT-applied footage.

  • @bernardryan475
    @bernardryan475 ปีที่แล้ว +30

    Another vote for the Black Magic Camera app deep dive tutorial! Someone elsewhere said you can preview a lut while filming in log using that app so that would really help with what you’re explaining in this vid about needing to compensate for Apple’s default overexposing.

    • @johnbanton8223
      @johnbanton8223 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The feature is there but currently a bit buggy and doesn’t represent the true look of the LUT. It comes out super overexposed on the display, although it does record with correct exposure, if you watch the histogram. But kind of defeats the purpose of having the lut on display in the first place

    In this video, you recommend underexposing Apple Log to force a low ISO and reduce noise. However, in your video about the Blackmagic Camera App, you recommend using ISO 1250 because of the higher dynamic range. When exposing at ISO 1250, do you suggest to 'expose to the right' with a variable ND filter and zebras?

  • @stevensonrf

    Any chance you can tell how you make the transition effect from the log to the colorized version of your video? 😊

    I matched my settings in camera exactly the way you did, but every time I hit the ProRes with the slash through it I get the warning that this is not available unless I use external storage. What did I do wrong?

    • @whoismatt
      @whoismatt  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      How much internal storage does your phone have? You may not be able to use it unless you have at least 256gb. A workaround would be to use the Blackmagic camera app

    Hi Matt, thank you so much for the tips..
    Just a heads up, you said “Now you can film in Apple ProRes in 422” 422 it’s just an option in BlackMagic Camera App and not in the native camera app, cause in the native it’s 4444 and not 422.

    Hello, I connected a sandisk m.2 4tb to a 15pro max, it is exfat formatted but I could not see the 444 codec, no matter what I did, it also takes a long time for the external disk to write to the disk while recording and when I save the recording, I have to wait about 10 seconds for it to be recorded again. Is this normal? Thank you for the information.

    Ive noticed noisy/out of focus footage when using indoors at 1250 ISO with an ND filter. Do I not have enough internal light to need the ND? Histogram shows I need it so a little confused. Its like although 1250 gives best dynamic range its also noisy due to high ISO.

I've always used rec.2020 for dolby and prores, but I can't find any official info for Log. Right now I'm using sRGB and Apple Log for inputs. I really appreciate the info in this video and in your BMC app tutorial. I wanted to support your efforts beyond liking/subscribing by purchasing your LUTs. But when I saw that they were over a hundred bucks for 12 LUTs, my enthusiasm was dampened a bit. I doubt I would pay $100 for a handful of LUTs from Thelma Schoonmaker or Arthur Schmidt, to be honest with you.

    One huge question to ask. Why would anyone want to use an iphone to shoot in log format? Afterall, the purpose of iphone is it's small form factor with its primay function being a phone and a portable powerful palm size computer. To shoot in log format, one would need a dangling external cord to connect to a SSD drive that is somehow attached to the iphone to provide enough memory space needed to shoot in log. All these additional hardware defeats the purpose of iphone. Why not just use a dedicated video camara that has a full size sensor to shoot professional looking product instead of trying to imulate professional looking product with an iphone with tiny sensor and less than ideal storage capacity. IMHO, this is much a much hyped function that most iphone users will not be using having to color grade LUTs or no LUTs before sharing. . It's an amazing capability of iphone 15 pro that few will use.
