  • This is a story of a mixed-race community of European ancestry, whose forefathers arrived and settled in South-East Asia in the late 1400s. A small community on the brink of being forgotten, small efforts are being carried out to ensure their language and customs are kept alive.

Some Erroneous information being decimated here particularly on the purpose and position of the term 'Serani'.
Serani is derived from the Malay term Nasrani or Nazarene in English which means Jesus the Nazarene thus referring to Christians the followers of Jesus Christ.
It's more a reference to the Religion as the Portuguese were Catholics Christians and for a long time the majority followers of the Christian faith.
Later the word shortened to Serani and evolved into the Malay colloquial term for the Portuguese and their descendants with mostly Malay in their matriarchal lineage.
The Portuguese were also known at that time with terms like,Bengali Putih,Portugis,Portu,Ferrangi

So the term remained until the present time as the Malay,(Colloquially-induced) term for the Portuguese descendants (Portuguese Eurasians as well as the other Eurasians)
It was always an exonym and remained that way and to claim that it had become an endonym for the Community is grossly erronous and a misrepresentation.Perhaps to a small cluster or a handfull of Malay-speaking Penang Eurasians it may have morphed into a endonym for themselves, though that again is disputable. But as stated by the claimant, that it is his personal opinion
The term Eurasian came with the entry of the British in no doubt but for the majority Portuguese sector the term Portuguese or its own colloquial 'Cristang' (derived from Cristao meaning Christians), remained the dominant terminologies referring to them or what they call themselves with Cristang becoming strictly endomnic.
The term 'Serani' never by and large, was evolved into an endomnic term.
An attempt to imply it so, is inaccurate and unacceptable.

Please read this in the light of clarity and further elucidation. there is no need to cross swords!! The term Serani and Nazrani has various origins - one of it:
In Kerala India where apparently the 2 terms derived from
    - Syriani (from followers of St Thomas the Syrian and Aramaic speaking apostle & missionary circa 50 AD). Some from this church were “Syriani” (or Syrian Christians).
The other, “Nazrani” (follower of the Nazarene Jesus Christ) a term derived from the 2nd wave of missionary activity (catholicism) by Portuguese (15-16th Century) & Italians
“Serani” and “Nazarani” are not terms referring to ethnicity (Europeans + Asians) but religious persuasion. Through the years, it also refers to ethnicity.
[history from a friend - in those days in Port Klang, there was one Thomas who owned the Port dispensary, called himself Syriani, and added that the neighbour - The Sta Maria family are Nazaranis]

I think you are confused with Eurasia. It’s a continent of Europe and Asia. Eurasian is a term for this ethnic community. Sometimes
Those born with mixed ethnicity of Europe and Asia are called eurasians. It depends on where you are too. Most are Portuguese descendants for this video.
