Not sure what you expected from A late 70s Malaise 440. It’s actually dead on in specs with what it was rated at new. About 195 HP and 310 lb ft torque.
I'm surprised it can still do even that. Those "malaise era" specs aren't necessarily what the engine is capable of; only what's reported to "comply" with expected horsepower ratings that the Federal Government and the insurance lobby wanted...DE-BALLED Detroit iron!
I had a 87 5th Ave with a 318 2bbl that had the spark control computer on it. I change the intake to a spread bore 4 bbl intake Carter Thermaquad 4 bbl card and the spark control computer and connected a Accel cd ignition box with the Accel super coil to the computer. install Busch platinum +4 spark plugs and Accel 9.4mm wires.
I had a 74 Imperial. I believe that in 75 they might have started with catalytic converters by then, also I believe that the 75 was available with a higher gear ratio available where I believe the 74 only had one option and I believe that was a 3 23 ratio. That 74 did OK, still ran the leaded gasoline, had the tank on the farm for leaded, and the car seemed to have decent power. The car was terrible on gas though, I figured the car at about 8 miles per gallon.
My 75 Imperial wasn't gutless, just not as quick as my 66 Newport 383.Gutless is like a 4 banger Ford Fairmont an numerous other cars I drove from the used lot.
A stock 73 74 chrysler 440 was rated at 225 horse and 345 torque so 45 years later on a dyno in a decent tune around 185 190 horse and maybe around 300 torque at the rear wheels... I'm sure I'm not far off
Lean Burn was the first car computer..was added for vehicle emissions..They didnt want to but had to,like today going electric dystopian forces at works aka government. I always replaced it with a points distributor or electronic ignition vacuum advance and ecu..You have to change the smog carburetor then you get huge power gains!! Its like a different engine, you have to set them differently too,not to the lean burn specs that most do and they ensure the car is slow.
I think sounds like it's got a stuck valve or that valve or something. I can clearly hear even on the video it's not running right. Especially if that's either the 351 400 or 460 those are smooth engines
That and the engine wasn't really making peak RPM. Sounded like it topped out a 4800rpm instead of 5000-5400rpm. These Mopars are capable of achieving low 5000s on the tachs bone-stock. Just because the carb is screaming doesn't mean the engine will explode. Now if the guy was trying to achieve anything above 5400rpm, then you'd have to worry about the engine. I know some of these stock C-body smog era cars have crummy shift governers so they have super low rpm shift points, but you're better off leaving the car in 2nd gear to achieve max rpm in a steady curve
Lol should’ve dyno mine that thing sounds like dead shyt had a fully rebuilt 440Mag no bullshyt on it RAW 440Mag in mine would BurnDown 50s for 150 fakn feet ida made u deaf that’s all your child nerves could take Bwhahahaha
Mr Lahey tuning his car to catch Ricky and Julian
So he can get to the LC faster
Man I love these old yorkers. Specially the 4 doors. Great sound man
Toss the Lean Burn and just use regular Electronic Ignition, My Brother did that to a Fifth Avenue and it helped a lot!
And a some bigger jets in that Thermoquad
I love it. Good old days of real cars. I have an imperial with some power upgrades and I’m planning to have it Dyno soon.
1:32 Sounded awesome!
The Chrysler New Yorker looks great in original form for a C body I named it Colossal body because it’s big

Beautiful New Yorker!!
Don’t care still love that car such a beast and yes more potential
carb and exhaust are a good start......but remember its still a heavy 4 door
My guess going in is 175 bhp.
I nailed it! 🤘
I owned a 75 Imperial and a 78 New Yorker they were quite gutless!!

@@jackanapes6676 the 2.72 was standard on the 75 but the 3.23 was optional.

car really needs a tuneup. The ignition is breaking up under load.
Post 1972 400 & 440s were Cows.
Now how much torque did the 440 have? Maybe not a lot of hp in this era, but plenty of torque to move it along i would think.
Yep, just about 310 pound feet
My knee jerk guess was 180hp. So ya...almost 200 is sweet. Definitely needs to be on the power cruise to Reno.

Interesting to think that a 318 2bbl engine was rated at 230 hp and 330 ftlbs of torque in 1968.
Don't forget, that they used "gross" hp ratings until 72 or 73 and it switched to "net" hp. I believe a Lean Burn 440 was rated at 210 net hp.
Why would anyone do this - back when these were current cars, owners called them "gutless wonders"
Hello, David, how are you was watching your video again? Wanted to say hello 2, my number one fan. Hope all is well with you this is sugar daddy
Ricardo Montalban will help you tune for this dyno event.
I could never figure out what made them come up with the Lean Burn system!
Emissions
They were trying to meet emissions requirements whit out a catalytic converter.

@@mypronouniswtf5559right on 👍 Use conventional Chrysler Electronic Ignition, and richen up that Thermoquad n it'll gain about 40hp.

It's got a 440, I think you might be right, pulling the heads apart sometime this fall probsbly
351, 400 or 460? It seems you're thinking Fomoco engines. Chrysler did have a 400 but no 351 or 460 engines.
Original is ffom motor, not rear
Where did you get this car?
It sounded like the 4bbl only opened 1 time out of all those pulls. Make sure the 4bbl is working.

Could not see from the angle perspective, is this running the lean burn computer?
Yes, ELB recently got removed tho due to bad driveability issues, working on replacing it with Mipar Electronic Ignition
