    Thank you for bringing a voice of compassion to the topic. If the whole debacle around Harry & Meghan has revealed anything, it's how much our society lacks understanding, empathy and compassion.

      That's half-true, I think. We've learned that today's society does not patronize those who are willing to damage their own families on a global stage. They generally won't patronize those caught lying or caught grossly exaggerating, either. Society in this way can set healthy boundaries and teach lessons. I think the problem that Harry had was trying to make the public his "therapist". He saw his mother try it, and it was successful for her in terms of great public support. But this is the age of social media. If Diana did the same today, people would confront her about traumatizing her children by airing her husband's sins to the world. They would ask how she could expose them to gossip, expose them to taunting in school, and to risk fracturing an emotional bond with their father. They would question why she was putting her emotional needs first, at the expense of her children's. Voices would bring tough love, as well as support, hate, craziness from the human family. Harry is receiving the overwhelming realities of the world that she did not. And hopefully, he'll come to accept responsibility for inviting it all in.

      Thank you Gabor, to t😮ell what you think about Harry, how traumatised he was, and his mother and father both were. I really am surprised by the venom of so many people who judge him mercilessly. And the way the British press hunts him and his wife down is beyond believe. There is no compassion there, it seems, only hatred.

    I really admire Harry for speaking publicly about his trauma. I think he is a true renegade, a truth teller and an inspiration. It takes a lot of courage to do that and I sense that he genuinely wants to help people by sharing his story. He's definitely helped me. I was silent about my trauma for way too long. When high profile speak out about what they have been through they inspire others to do the same and help us know that we are not the only one. I really admire famous people who use their fame to help others. I recommend the series he did with Oprah called The Me You Can't See for anyone who hasn't seen it. I felt really validated when I watched it. Whatever traumatic experiences you have had to endure in your life, you are not alone, there is absolutely nothing to be ashamed of and you deserve to be heard, seen and supported❤

    I'm grateful to you, Gabor and Rangan, for bringing this compassionate voice to the Harry 'situation'. I feel very sad about the family breakdown and hope that the brothers can one day see beyond their current differences, but it is difficult to see how that can happen when media (social and otherwise) persist in adding fuel to the flames of discord. All families have problems, but few are under so much external pressure. I wish Harry and Meghan, William and Kate, Charles and Camilla the best. I honestly believe that they are all caring people who genuinely want the best for each other, but they are stuck. More voices like yours are needed to take a more objective and genuinely concerned stance. I am sick of the vitriol.

    It seems like "Harry" is more important than the rest of us peasants who grew up more emotionally deprived and with hardships much greater than "Prince Harry". Harry has the economic means to have many material posessions and and pay for all the mental health an medical care he will ever need. He's in a position to meet all kinds of people, make friends. and earn millions. I'm a person whose mother abandoned me and my sister as a child, been widowed and divorced and live in low income housing and can't afford the medical and things I need and no one is asking if they can help me so Harry has so many advantages than the majority of us peasants. Harry's not the the only child who lost a parent to violence and didn't receive the emotional support he/she needed. My god there are thousands upon thousands around the world suffering much greater than Harry.

Then when we dared to say 'enough!' those same media moguls have not gone on to vilify us out of spite.
      Imagine your story splashed across multiple papers and news headlines, but they are effectively blaming you for all the things that have traumatized you. Then imagine that happening every single day constantly from the day your traumas began. That is what is happening still to Harry.

  • @iamlpinthe312
    @iamlpinthe312 ปีที่แล้ว +35

    Let’s be clear about a few things…
    Harry alone wasn’t traumatized by the death of his mother. Unlike his brother, Harry didn’t have the pressure on him of being a future king and having to comport yourself accordingly. He was given so much slack from the public for his transgressions, from the Nazi uniform outfit to the drug use , crazy Vegas, etc. He could have left the Royal family without writing such personal ( and subjective) things in a ‘tell all ‘ and without dragging the family through the trenches. If he actually lived out the privacy that he claims he so desperately wants then there’s room for empathy. He has done quite the opposite. Regardless of the reasons,he is not a child. He has the access to the best therapy money can buy. There are no excuses for his behavior. I have lived through the wreckage of a narcissist and it’s never enough for them.

    • @kessa892
      @kessa892 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      This is a really invalidating and insensitive response. Are you saying that Harry isn't entitled to his trauma because his brother was, at the time, a notch above him in the line to the throne? All royals (including those that aren't second to the throne) have immense pressures on them to conform to their social roles lest they be hammered by the media for not living up to expectations. Every member of this family has been given slack for one thing or another - it's the reality of their privilege. One thing i'll say is that Harry has lived his entire life in the spotlight. For decades, the tabloid media have gotten away with distorting and mischaracterizing the truth about Harry and his family. So, I understand why he has decided that he wants to finally take control of the narrative of his own life in a public way. Contrary to what everyone says, he hasn't dragged his family through the trenches. He's never denigrated or belittled anyone in his family - the media does that. It seems that people just like to think that because he is spotlighting a side of his family that is less than perfect. Even more, Harry is doing the unthinkable in British society: talking publicly about his mental health issues.
      As a side note, empathy is not conditional. If you're naturally empathetic, your empathy is given freely without judgment, no matter the situation. You don't have to agree with someone or support their behaviour to empathise with them.

    • @Laura-lc2io
      @Laura-lc2io ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@kessa892 Difference is Harry and his wife are using his mother death as a weapon against his brother (who is only 2 years older). While William stayed strong, moved on and is using his experience to give strength to other young people.
      And stop with that bs about empathy. EMPATHY IS CONDITIONAL. And it should be.
      That's what we have brains for - to judge. Without it we wouldn't be able to learn anything. People who don't use it are easy to be fooled or abused. You wouldn't feel empathy towards Dahmer or Watts. Would you?

    • @kessa892

Harry has been incredibly open and vulnerable about his experience with losing his mother and its highly insensitive to even suggest an ulterior motive when you have zero evidence to back up your claim.
      Empathy is NOT conditional. I won't even press this point even further because only empaths will understand that expressing compassion is a natural response to hearing about somebody's struggles. If you don't feel that way, then I'm sorry - you sound like you haven't been modeled unconditional compassion from those around you. I understand Dahmer had a horrible upbringing which contributed significantly to his sociopathy - I feel compassion for this and I'm sorry to anyone that has had to face abuse or dysfunction in their childhood. Doesn't mean I agree with his actions (didn't you read what I said above?). Idk who Watts is.

      Many people suffer some kind of trauma. It's an inevitable part of life. At some point we must move on take on grown up responsibility for our grown up behavior.
      My sibling commited suicide when I was 15. My aunt and uncle died in a car accident and left behind 8 kids.

    • @kessa892
      @kessa892 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@lindaeasley5606 I'm afraid you're terribly, terribly mistaken. Validation is a fundamental part of maintaining a healthy emotional state. Everyone needs it. All validation refers to is the process of being understood and accepted by your family and peers. Giving validation is showing that you care about someone. If your spouse is upset about something, do you shut them out and tell them to get over themselves? Or do you sit with them, listen to their feelings and concerns, accept them for what they are and help them to feel better? The latter is validation. Narcissists need a constant supply of validation, it's true, because they often don't receive any as children. They're willing to use and hurt people to get it. This is not to say that all children who don't receive validation turn out to be narcissists. Based on what I've seen, Harry now seems very emotionally grounded - narcissists rarely are. He's definitely come a long way. Btw, vulnerating yourself by sharing your personal story (as Harry has done) is not a symptom of narcissism! If so, then that means that anyone who has ever written an autobiography is a narcissist, which is obviously absurd.
      I'm truly sorry to hear about your sibling, aunt and uncle - that must have been incredibly difficult for your family to go through. It's true that life goes on and among the best ways to do so is to grieve openly with loved ones. Grief is an important part of heartbreak recovery and its important to get it right from the start so it doesn't transform into 'complicated grief' - when painful emotions don't lessen with time. It's apparent that Harry was dealing with complicated grief for a long time. By going to therapy and doing the work, Harry is taking responsibility of his feelings. He's even gone a step further by sharing with the world that it's ok to not be ok when you don't receive the right support during times of grief.
      Harry is certainly not the last one to speak on the subject. There is a major stigma around mental illness and many are unwilling to even acknowledge it. It was revealed in the interview that Harry and William, together, wanted to campaign in raising awareness around mental health struggles - surely the first in the family to do so. Unfortunately the Queen disapproved and they were told to focus on something else. It's heartening to see that Harry has continued to speak on something that is clearly important to him now that he has the freedom to do so.

    I don’t follow stories about Harry, but I do read and listen to Gabor Mate. I can certainly relate to the difficulties that a family member can experience when they stop participating in the dysfunction. It is very difficult to remain connected to people who are stuck in denial and refuse to recognise the ‘love’ they are offering is actually very damaging. If you care for a person, you make an effort to understand them. When you understand that your treatment of them is harmful, you make a commitment to change. When you prioritise your love for a person, it is easy to change. But when you have other, higher priorities, you will sacrifice the person who is highlighting the problem. You will sacrifice them and you will claim that they are the problem. Harry is a scapegoat. The scapegoat is not the problem. The problem is the problem.

    I can’t imagine what it must’ve been like to grow up in an institution like the RF. I would say a rarefied environment like that lacked expressions of love and warmth. The focus is more on public duty and service.
    If the RF and the people around them identified with their roles very seriously, it would be a very surreal experience to deal with so much formality, protocol, masks and personas. I’d say “gilded cage” is apt. But also utterly surreal like puppets in a theatre
    On top of that the relationship with the public is disturbing from my point of view, where they are treated as Icons- venerated and separate to, but also a sense of ownership by, the general public. People projecting their own selves, ideals, devotion and love or hate on to them all the time. I’m saying it’s disturbing to be having that kind of experience and relationship with the world
    I’m obviously speaking from my perspective as an outsider. Imagine being born into that, it’s all normalised. But you’d know something wasn’t right, something is missing. How can any of us judge Harry really, we have no idea. It was/is a different reality he was born into
    A lot of anger and venom is directed at him for speaking out against his family. I haven’t followed this much or read his book…but I’ve read a fair few comments here and elsewhere about Harry hurting his “loving family”. This is quite complex as there seems to be a lot of projection and idealisation going because they are the/ “our” ROYAL family. “How dare he!?”
    Not saying they weren’t loving in the best way they could, you could actually say that about every family. But of course they nonetheless can cause a huge amount of damage and pass on generational trauma.
    I understand I’m going to be lacking nuance about the queen saying they can’t be half in/ half out. However that is also a common pattern in dysfunctional families. You will be scapegoated and cut off if you don’t tow the family line.
    If Harry’s behaviour is a little worrying at times as I’ve heard people say, I wouldn’t be surprised. I’d say he’s having a colossal culture shock having so much freedom, and adjusting to “normal” life as a civilian. He’s also had a monumental loss with being effectively cut off from his family and the RF institution. He could be having an identity crisis, as anyone would who has gone though so much change. Especially difficult in a public facing role where there is so much judgment directed at him.
    I’d say give him some time and he’ll find himself. He’ll gather up his true inner strength and power, beyond anything he had when in the RF. I believe he’s got a VERY big role, yet to be played out. He is an instigator of change. And that is always going to be messy, chaotic and met with resistance, especially so when going against the force of the monarchy.
    But I do believe ultimately change is inevitable, and also needed. And Harry is still playing a big part in the monarchy, whether he is recognised as a member of it or not.
    He is really spotlighting the monarchy for our attention. Whether the monarchy will ultimately survive is the question, but it will definitely need to evolve and adapt.

    I have compassion for how isolating and controlled his life must have been. But this interview drove home a point for me. He's 38 years old, Dr. Mate called him a young man, for every one else on earth, that's an adult. And they've mostly used any extra chances they've had by then. Most people would find themselves deported, without a chest full of medals for military service.
    I don't wish any harm to come to him, like I said, I bet his childhood was really hard. But when we discover that a criminal or even just a poor person, came from a hard, deprived background, people are so intolerant and judgemental and call it excuse making. I wish some of this compassion for Harry, could transfer to the millions of other people who have come from a hard place and don't end up fabulously wealthy and famous.
    And I disagree that he is vilified for talking about emotional pain. I think the public has shown a greater than usual tolerance or even interest in his emotional pain, compared to the emotional pain of others. A typical truck driver or nurse wouldn't get nearly as much attention paid to their emotional pain, and would find friends and family and acquaintances withdrawing and even speaking poorly of them behind their backs.

Problem is that he has the wrong people around him who encourage and enable the wrong ways of dealing with his problems and are only out for what they can get out of him and his titles and contacts around the world. Harry will meet a very sticky end unfortunately unless he miraculously wakes up to what hes married and Markle will just carry on as normal with that disgusting grin on her face conning everyone she comes into contact with. I too lost my mother & sister at Harry's age, in a car accident as well! Yes it took years for the healing to begin! You can't go on live TV and expect all the truth to come out when looking for views and money! Secondly I could not start healing until I dealt with my addictions! You can't be stoned out of your mind expecting wholeness! That's the therapy I was taught! Also to be presently in a dysfunctional family let alone what he went through with his RF certainly does not help! People comment how Harry was never touched, give me a break there is a lot of evidence to the contrary !Part of Harry's healing (so he says) was the constant flashes of photographers, yet he has never had it worse with his wife in Cali, Hollywood no less! The day you stop blaming everyone for your life decisions, is when the true healing begins! It's called insight! You can't be yourself until you're truly yourself, off drugs!

    • @kessa892
      @kessa892 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Maybe during your next session, you could discuss with your therapist how to have a little more empathy and be less a little less judgmental. True healing also starts when you stop trying to find the faults in other people's lives and stop invalidating people's trauma. Also, he said that he takes these drugs in appropriate doses and within a safe environment. It helps to reconnect with himself, who the hell am I to suggest he's lying? Idk why people are acting like he's shooting up with dirty needles in a back alley. Also, I'm sorry to hear about your mother and sister. I would think with the years of healing you've undergone you would know that everybody has different ways of healing. The ayahuasca is only one facet of what seems to be a much larger system of healing for Harry.

    yeah, I hate hearing H & M bashing, it's so cruel. He didn't ask to be born in such a dysfunctional family. WOW! Grandma said enough of talking about mental health, back to royal duties........OMG !! Typical delusional family. I use to get told that all the time..... don't talk, don't ask that, we don't say that, we don't ask that ! I'm really concocting what words would be appropriate to word whip these people who try to tell you what to say and what to ask... with the harshest reality possible. It's unacceptable, Queen or no Queen.

    Just because someone is rich doesn’t make them less human than the rest of us. They have the same emotional struggles. It doesn’t magically disappear just because they have money. Harry doesn’t think himself more important.

    Harry is very strong & balanced by now. His goal is using the huge platform he has to enlightening others about how to recover or cure from mental health problems. 🥰

    Harry, stay strong and lift your head up high.
    Let out the pain no matter what they tell you!

    The so call ROYALE family only care about how they appear to other people.
    Its all about pride!

    This sad drama we look at it from a another country as whole British nation having a blind eye on emotional mental health issues and childhood trauma. There's no compassion or empathy from Royal family members, public or media to Harry and his family. Harry is a good example of person who went through childhood truma and still suffering mental health issues but try to empower others by his book and interview but it failed. When it comes to Crown no compassion for weak emotions and feelings. You need to be tough and brave. The duty to country come first. They forget Royal family humans with feelings. They need to have strict Occupational Health & Safety policies for Royal family on mental health issues as Public Servants. They are working royals should allowed to have stress leave. May be they have already.

    Talk about your own trauma if you like if it helps but to lash out at close family members and resort to making hurtful comments about his brother to me is unacceptable.

    Harry is a beautiful soul.
    No matter how the media positions him,
    he radiates power and fearlessness to stand for his truth, not others truth
    Prince or pauper, Harry is admired and well loved by many..
    He walked away from a castle to enjoy peace with the woman he has chosen and loves
    For the haters, check your mirrors, and reflect upon your lives🙏

    I wonder how our ancestors lived through unimaginable conditions 100 to 300 yrs ago! People who have lived through Childhood trauma will benefit from therapy but they also need some gratitude to the great aspects of their lives!

    Ok, so I get all that, but he still publicized private information about his family, all over the world, against their wishes. That’s rude and unfair. Did he consider what that would do them, Their image, their reputation, and how this would effect his personal relationship with them. This should have been taken up with them privately, or he should have worked his issues out privately with his counselor. This family betrayal was done at their expense and for fame and money.

      I think Markle has a large influence on that. If he hasn't met her I don't think he would have aired his grievances so publicly and to hurt his family. Meghan definitely encouraged him.

    People love to beat the person that doesn't want to follow a given protocol. But we need to have compassion for others that are suffering.

    I see Meghan and Harry as wanting a better future together and for the kids. Sometimes u dont fully wake up until u have babies and you open your heart to them and yourself. Its a vulnerable time for them is all and they are crying out to be heard and understood. Meghan is his wife and stuck it out with royal family as best she could. Better than his previous girlfriends who wete too smart to touch it. So lets rejoice that we can care @ them and rise to the occasion. I dont feel good @ condemning them in any way. We have to accept a bigger role on our own lives and stop glaring at them. Meghan always has Harrys hand and is compassionate. Who said she had to be perfect? Thats Kates job !💞👩‍🎤

    "Because he is speaking about something you are not supposed to speak about" this not only made sense to me in the context of Harry but also the reaction of my grown children when I left their father.

    Loved this. I'm a redhead.. who specialises in trauma and sensitivity - because I understand it. How interesting that we need more anaesthesia! I also react horribly to anaesthetic with vomiting afterwards and sometimes during dental work I bleed more too. Sensitivity is such a broad phenomenon. And it affects everything about us mentally AND physically.
