    They nailed it. I think the show would have done quite well with the Cowsill's essentially playing themselves as originally intended. If I remember correctly the Cowsill's balked at the idea of Shirley Jones playing their mother. The kids wanted their mom (who was a member of the family band and performed as such), but the producer insisted on Shirley Jones and the rest is history.

    • @DPMConnacht
      @DPMConnacht 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@MORE1500, that's a great question. From what I've read the father was the one in charge. He dictated every aspect of the family's career.
      I've read it was he who demanded his wife/the kids mother be part of the band. I think she was reluctant to be a member of the group, and if she had a choice, the Cowsills would have been just the boys and daughter. The kids may have even agreed to having Shirley Jones play their mother (the mother didn't enjoy the spotlight anyway). I wouldn't be surprised if the father was the entire reason the television deal fell through.
      He seemed to be a hard guy to get along with, so I doubt he'd ever agree to someone else playing "his" part.

    Now this is a gas! Songwriter Tony Romeo wrote this one and the Cowsills' "Indian Lake", the Cowsills themselves have a good relationship with Shirley Jones, and yes, they are and were good musicians. I liked Susan, too. Yeah, the Partridges were essentially David, Shirley, vocalists Tom and Jackie Bahler and a slew of studio players, and they crocked the Cowsills' story. But, by 1970, the band was in full disarray, and we now know no one wanted to deal with Bud Cowsill. They deserved one hell of a lot better than they actually got.

    • @joecomer8275
      @joecomer8275 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @101944062408843500783 Most of what you say is most definitely true But to say that "by 1970, the band was in full disarray" is completely incorrect. Billy was no longer with the band but otherwise the Cowsills were completely intact. They were still recording and touring to huge crowds and continued to do so until 1972. Among the many things they accomplished in 1970 was an engagement at the Flamingo Hotel in Las Vegas where they were in the audience one night and introduced from the stage by Elvis. Also one of their best albums was released that year, "IIXII" which contained, among many wonderful tracks, a recording of "I Really Want to Know You" written by Cynthia Weil and Barry Mann. Legendary songwriters from the Brill building group of composers, they had penned songs like "You Lost That Lovin' Feeling", "On Broadway" and "I Just Can't Help Believing". When the producers of those records falsely identified as by "The Partridge Family" heard the Cowsills version they decided to cover it for that first album But its the C's version of that song that was back then and remains now the best version of THAT song, I think. Perhaps, Shirley Jones did record on those records labeled as the Partridge Family but she is extremely hard to hear and might as well not be singing on them at all.

    • @rjmcallister1888
      @rjmcallister1888 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      In various interviews, both Shirley Jones and David Cassidy acknowledged they were the only two to sing on their Bell LP's. Tom Bahler, Jackie Ward, Ron Hicklin and even Mike Melvoin and Larry Knechtal contributed vocals, and, with a couple of first-album exceptions, Shirley's vocals were dialed back because she sounded too old at 35. Members of LA's famed Wrecking Crew provided the instrumentals.
      Both Bob and Barry Cowsill have noted, in "Family Band" and elsewhere, that the band was in disarray after Bill's "firing", but did continue on. Both knew the end was near; the records weren't selling and the crowds began to dwindle. And then, they came to realize all the money they'd earned the previous five years was gone.
      The Partridges' "I Really Want to Know You" was cut primarily by Shirley, Ron Hicklin and the other singers because Wes Farrell had yet to let David Cassidy sing lead (he had to audition). Both groups give justice to a great song.

    • @joecomer8275
      @joecomer8275 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I am quite aware of what Bob and Barry said. I have seen that excellent documentary many times and knew of their feelings before the documentary was produced. They may have thought as they did and considering their loss I can certainly understand that. But although the end might have been near, by no means did they give up. In case you did not read my post thoroughly, they did continue to record and tour. Whether they produced hits or not makes absolutely no difference to me. The recordings continued and were better than ever. For a band that was supposedly in "disarray" they continued to make great music. Sorry, if you don't agree with my comment, but I really don't care.
      Certainly their father's contribution to their decline, a word I prefer over "downfall" or "disarray", has been documented quite well as has Bill's departure from the band and family. However, it's my thinking that the changes that were being made at the company at that time had just as much to do with the lack of hits as anything. Once the band had defiled what MGM referred to as their image and proven that "Hair" was a hit, the clock really began ticking-backwards. When that happened, the company simply didn't see the family band the same way. BIll's departure from the group did hurt the chances for the band to have another hit, but still the band kept on going. As I said, they produced some of their best music during that period of '69, '70, '71 and '72 on both MGM and London records, some of it with Bill returning to record and write with his siblings. And although there are at least a couple of stories considering the split with MGM-some say they left the company, some say the company fired them-they simply didn't back the band as well or as much after Bill left. Sour grapes if you ask me. Because the C's music was changing and they were attempting to tear their way out of that box known as image that artists can be placed in, MGM basically washed their hands of them. The power a recording company has over an artist can make or break success and tear every bit of creative juices from their soul. Fortunately, with the Cowsills, the latter never happened, although the former most unfortunately did.
      Where in the hell did the comment come from that the Cowsills "give justice to" "I Really Want to Know You"? Of course they do. Otherwise they wouldn't have been the first to record it and as I've said before, better than ANYONE else. The C's knew good music when they heard it.
      Again, you refer to "the Partridges" as though they were a real group. They were not. Outside of Cassidy, the recordings were a result of a gathering of successful but largely little known studio musicians and vocalists that other than the name of the show, had no connection with that show that promoted those records at all. The instrumentalists you mention may very well have been known in the industry. Surely the Wrecking Crew were highly respected by many artists of the time. They were fine talents all and contributed their creativity to some of the best recordings of all time. It might very well be that some of them worked with the Cowsills at some time or another. Certainly the C's have always been open and above board about the fact that "Hair" was the first record in which they played all the instruments. Nevertheless, the contribution to the facade known as "the Partridge Family" that the Wrecking Crew and others made was never revealed to the public while the records were being made and the fakeness of what we saw on television every week with regards to the sound while never denied was certainly also never admitted at the time by anyone, including the stars of the show! Add to that those 10, 11, 12, 13 and 14 year olds who were in love with David Cassidy, there weren't many who cared, sad to say!! As far as Shirley Jones' contribution to those recordings, as I said before, her vocals are very hard to hear. This includes "I Really Want to Know You". In fact, "dialed back" or not, they could just as well have been done by one or more of those studio vocalists. In the Cowsills' recording their mom Barbara (who was in her '40's at the time) is singing lead, and there was certainly no need to "dial back" her vocals, although they are, I believe, at least in part overdubbed. In any case, you still hear and know it's her.

    Wow ! Susan Crough and David Cassidy from "The Partridge Family " have passed on , and "The Cowsills" pay tribute to them by playing this song, talk about " Art imitating Life imitating Art" ( I think !?) .... I think The Cowsills would have been so good in their own "Partridge Family Show" , but possibly everything happens for a reason.... they are true survivors !

    I rediscovered these videos a week ago and am fascinated by the cowsills all over again, of course being fifty eight I had a huge crush on Susan, saw them at a car show in San Antonio and got the nerve to ask her for her autograph, still got it somewhere

    The Partridge "Family" could never have done anything live, and have it sound as recorded. This was because the "Family" was two people: Shirley Jones and step-son, David Cassidy. This is great! Performed by the real family of singers, who were the inspiration and model for the Partridge Family.

    I think it is so cool the Cowsills got along so well with cast members of the Partridge family and were even somewhat close. Both this band and the cast of the Partridge got screwed out of a lot of money. That is one thing they can all relate too.

    This is so surreal… Will the real Partridge Family please stand up? (My mistake- they already are!) I think The Cowsills should record all the Partridge Family hits. They would be so much better than the trash that’s being sold as music today. The Cowsills had talent in the 60s, and they never lost it.

    Wow, surprisingly good! You can kinda imagine how they could've had all the P-Family hits in the '70s. Poor group, lost so many family members
