I love this group & the song! I saw the documentary on The Cowsills a month ago & it was deeply moving, I have such admiration for these family members, their strength is amazing. This performance is pure fun, wish I could've been there in person!
For tunes like "Hair" and "The Rain, The Park & Other Things" that are replayed heavily on oldies radio, it's great to know that this group can belt out "Love, American Style" as if it were brand new.
I forgot all about this song (and tv show). Really a nice song, with great melodies, harmonies, and lyrics that mix in lines like "star spangled" and "by the dawn's early light". Great feel good song.

The series ran for five seasons with a total of 108 episodes; 90 of the episodes were 60 minutes in length, while 15 were 30 minutes long... In the show's first season the family singing group, The Cowsills, sang the theme song; and for the final four season it was performed by The Charles Fox Singers... Sadly; three members of the Cowsills have passed away; mother Barbara in 1985 at age 56, Barry* in 2005 at 51, and William in 2006 at 58... May all three R.I.P. * Barry was a victim of Hurricane Katrina on August 29th, 2005...
In all the post Katrina chaos it took a while to find his remains, which had to be identified through dental records. The family had just laid him to rest when they got the news about Billy. So sad.
This song takes us back to the simpilar and fun times of the 1960s when you would sit back and watch a TV show that had a great opening theme song. The Cowsills did an amazing job then and now with singing this memorable song ! Very happy to see the remaining members still performing and having fun ! Epic video ! ❤❤❤❤
Eric Springer With the exception of David Cassidy, the real Cowsills' voices were far better I'm guess the Cowsills didn't want to do it. They may have been offered. Acting is far different from singing. compared to singing, screen acting is a pain in the butt really

But, in my mind, Bill, another Cowsill brother and the original lead singer on Indian Lake, The Rain, the Park....., was the voice, and better (in my opinion) than Cassidy. Also, the Cowsills were going to be in the Partridge Family show, but when mama Cowsill was replaced by Shirley Jones, mentally deranged papa Cowsill got his feelings hurt and killed the deal.....for all the family. Too bad.
I'd forgotten that. It wasn't until recently that I'd learned that the theme from Laverne & Shirley was an actual song that had gotten airplay. I'd always thought that it was written for the series.

The first season they used Bill Haley's Rock Around the Clock, then they had a different theme song that a real band used but that real band were different people social musicians and singers put together a specifically, from what I could gather, for the purpose of promoting the theme song and promoting the TV show.

if the tv show LAS launched careers then they were finished on THE LOVE BOAT. Great rendition of the song even after all these years.Family harmonies are never forgotten.
They pretty much started the family band thing. After them you had the Jacksons, the Osmonds and ofcourse the tv hit Partridge Family modeled after them. They were pioneers!

I remember that Friday night lineup. My two brothers used to get out of work at 9:30 pm and bring home pizza just in time for LAS.
