If people NEED context on an almost 100 year old movie...... it shows how pathetic society has become. And how erasing history is only going to make it worse.
Why would you remove Cops when there are other "reality" cop shows on the ID network? Shouldn't those be removed as well if you are going by that standard?
Why on earth would the change the name of a pancake mix that’s been around for almost 100 years!! These SJWS don’t realize that Aunt Jemima signed a contract to be the spokes person & allowed her name & image to be used!! She died a very wealthy woman & there was never a complaint until these racist now!!
Gary Newcomb The thing is Aunt Jemima is a very harmful stereotype that places black women who look like her in the same pool. She became a whole racial stereotype (The Mammy). We still see heavy set dark skinned black women only being cast in Mammy roles to this day. There are plenty of folks that have never met one of us before. The things that they see in media is what they think actual black people are. I’ve delt with the Jezebel stereotype my whole life, before even knowing it was a thing.
Trying to rewrite history is not the solution! This subsequently erases the struggles black people went through at the time and in the film industry. It’s important that we are all aware of it moving forward so it doesn’t happen anymore.
Fatimah -I agree. Writing about history and repeating history is two different things. The stories told and written about now and in the future should be of a different narrative of the Black experience, of the American experience and of the Human experience. 3 separate incidents of Black men found hanging from a tree in the past 3 weeks in 2020. And being deemed suicide without full investigations. My God, we are still writing about and living in something that should be a past tragic human experience. 2020 No Justice No Peace. Sam Cooke said, “ Change Gone Come “, When?
They are not erasing anything. Gone with the Wind is actually the epitome of rewritting history because it romanticizes the Confederacy. They are just putting up a disclaimer explaining the context, they are not asking for the movie to be made illegal.
Katie St. Vincent oh well that’s great then. Why are they making it seem like they’re taking it down? They should definitely acknowledge that this movie romanticizes slavery and the confederacy to show people’s line of thinking at this time...
@@fatimah230 They have announced multiple times that they aren't taking it down forever, but people seem just to lock on to taking it down. Even if they were it isn't like HBO is the only place people can find GWTW. It is probably one of the easiest movie to find considering it hasn't gone out of circulation since it first hit the small screen. Honestly, I think the right just wants something to complain about. And they throw around the word censorship and then it freaks everyone out so even left leaning people are jumping on the bandwagon. It was just extremely blown out of proportion. Disney Plus has been doing this for a while for movies like Aladdin and Peter Pan.
Plus, Mammy was the smartest and wisest person in the movie. She may have been a 'servant' but she didn't shy away from telling Scarlett, Rhett or anyone else what to do !
Also what I love about Gone With The Wind is that Rhett, someone she's serving, highly respected Mammy. He bought her an expensive petticoat to show his appreciation for her. I'm sure that many slave owners didn't do that. And for those who consider Scarlett canon, Mammy was buried with that petticoat on. She was highly valued and treated well!
Mammy made me smile as she would talk to Scarlett or Rhett in a straightforward way and I was proud of Hattie McDaniel when she won her oscar. But I only love Gone With The Wind for the costumes and Im recreating Melanie and Scarlett’s clothes since Walter Plunket made absolutely gorgeous dresses.
Pulling "Gone with the Wind" is the dumbest decision ever made. The film is a piece of American film history. Removing it is equivalent to book burning.
It’s coming back to the service. And it’s currently available on like 4 different platforms. HBO doesn’t have the power to erase the film, a bit dramatic there....
You realize they still sell this film on DVD and blue ray? You can get it in stores or you can order it online. It's no big deal. I own it for crying out loud and I also have the wizard of Oz.
Give me one report of people burning copies of Gone With the Wind? ONE. HBO taking it off their streaming platform does not make to movie disappear. Is it not still available on youtube? Is it not still available on DVD? Is it not still available on Google Play? You are making a mountain out of a molehill.
@@katiest.vincent4283 Warner pulled the movie from a French movie Theater where it was supposed to be shown. HBO's decision creates a precedent for censorship.
Whoopie hit the nail on the head 30 seconds in. If you start removing fictional films because they aren't historically accurate we're gonna be left with about 20 movies. It's a ridiculous precedent to set.
Did everyone miss the point that the movie isn't being removed? They are just going to add footnotes to the movie and bringing it back at a later time. They aren't setting a precedent. The only precedent would be adding footnotes. Let us be real, the kind of people who don't understand that a movie is fiction are the same people who won't read or understand the footnotes.
This is not censorship. No one is preventing the movie from being bought or sold. They are simply choosing not to play it on their platform. This movie is not a historical account of slavery, but a romanticized version of the gallant 'old south' where slaves were very happy to me owned like animals. There is a growing movement in this country to rewrite history to say that slavery wasn't all that bad because white masters valued the work of the people that they enslaved. Movies like GWTW help to push that narrative. You can watch plenty of documentaries or non-fiction films about the true nature of slavery if you want to actually learn from history.
@@patriciae3082 I'm a Black Man & I say there IS a level of censorship in this move from HBO Max - right, NOW (since they said it WILL be brought back). They could've easily kept the original version available & swap-out the context version, when it's ready. I'm all about CONSUMER OPTIONS when it comes to the media library - NOT a corporation telling me what & when I can watch a nearly 100 year old movie that no one is forcing me to watch. Yes, sure there ARE documentaries - but, what if what I want to watch is the cinematic ART of FICTIONAL, cinematic, storytelling, instead? Also, if you go to Amazon and most online stores, you will have a hard time trying to buy a Blu-ray or DVD, today. Besides, if you want to REALLY be offended by depictions of slavery, there's always "Mandingo." Censorship tends to miss THAT dumpster fire due to the film's much lower profile, I presume. 🎬🔗🚫👀
@@KelvinMMoore69 Well Kelvin, I am a black woman and I don't think it's censorship, so what does that prove either way? There are plenty of films that HBO chooses not to screen. If you want to watch them, you simply choose another platform. HBO is not telling you what you can and can't watch. This private company is telling you what they will an won't play. If the movie is difficult to find it's because people are choosing not to stock it. Again, their choice. Are you saying that companies should be forced to do things just because you want them?
@@sinamakivic3153 The irony is that civil rights leaders didnt go around advocating censorship for movies, bc they were actually for freedom...and civil rights. 🤷🏽♀️
@@caramelspice7244 Learn the definition of words before you use them. One streaming platform removing a movie temporarily to put a disclaimer at the begining which we do for lots of things is not censorship. Even if they were to remove it permanently that still would not classify as censorship because it is still available through other streaming services including this one. No streaming platform has every movie ever made on it and expecting it to is flat out delusional. Plenty of streaming networks have it and plenty do not. That isn't censorship that is capitalism.
HBO Max could have just removed Gone with the Wind and not said anything, and probably no one would have noticed, because not that many people even have HBO Max yet. They just wanted publicity.
I think that wanted to make it clear that they didn't want to continue showing a film that downplays the horrors of slavery. A film, might I add, that was protested by the black community (sons and daughters of actual slaves) when it came out in the 1940s. I know that you don't care about the legacy of slavery and racism in this country, but that doesn't mean that no one does.
Patricia E sorry but I disagree. You must be able to separate art from its themes. Society is always going to evolve and get more progressive moving forward. But if you start “cancelling” everything that portrays something that used to be, because times no longer reflect those views, you’re going to burn a big library of content that has important cinematic and artistic impact and significance. Gone with the Wind is the highest grossing movie of all time (not accounting inflation), and that’s a pretty remarkable achievement and deserves to be remembered for that alone. But, if you really wanna go down this road, hopefully someday feminism is going to be seen as a hateful ideology and every movie to ever portray it will be pulled as well. I wouldn’t mind that at all
Retroactively applying the morals of today to a film that was made when Betty White was 17 is intellectually bankrupt. Films depicting racism, dont necessarily support it. It was the first film to ever land an Academy Award for a black actor.
OMG, is Betty white that old? Anyway, everytime that BLM is trending, conversations about gone with the wind starts... again. Although it has aged, I think it’s still a beautiful film and Scarlett O’Hara is a badass
Paul Simpson yes because of the segregating laws at the time, it’s not the film’s fault. She still won and defeated white, famous actresses that year. So for you to reduce the legacy of her winning to just the fact that she couldn’t attend is tragic
Pop Land, I’m in total agreement with you! If we retroactively apply the morals of today to what happened 50+ years ago, we will have numerous movies/films/cartoons/comedies to remove, statues to eradicate, states/cities/streets to rename, and court cases to try. Relentlessly we will work to correct the past by using today’s standards, which is ABSURD and maybe even somewhat comical. Are those who are demanding removal viewing the full picture!? Wiping away “the reminders” facilitates a removal - within the minds of people - of an important period of American history. We cannot rewrite history but we can certainly learn from it! Keeping “the reminders” helps all to learn from the mistakes of the past so it will never be repeated. So with that in mind, in the long term it’s more dangerous to remove these reminders than to keep them. Just my two cents....
Yikes, it depicted racism and implicit bias but at least the Black actor won. We are not that simple, right? A disclaimer will do just fine. Many people don't see the film as racist, so yeah a disclaimer is needed.
I absolutely agree with Whoopi. I love gone with the wind and I'm black. I love the story of the movie. I love old movies and it's ironic honestly. And if we get rid of one movie then we have to get rid of almost all the movies before the 21st century.
I love the story, too. Gone With the Wind happens to be set against the backdrop of the Civil War, but it's primarily a romance story. Scarlett O'Hara loved loved loved Ashley Wilkes and by gosh she's determined to get him. So what if he's married to Melanie?
No one is getting rid of it. This is one platform. How did people watch movies before streaming platforms existed? Guess what you can still do that! Or if you must stream it is till available on a variety of platforms. I adore Gone With the Wind, I have a copy on DVD and a copy of the original novel. I used to own a movie poster. But, I can't get behind all this outrage. We put disclaimers up on movies all the time for a whole host of things people find offensive. Nudity, language, violence etc. How is this honestly any different? It isn't even a mass thing it is happening on one platform there are multiple other ones you can watch if you need to watch it during it's brief abscense. This is literally so overblown it is ridiculous.
It is a love story, a story of survival. Scarlett was a true heroine for her time. It took place in the South before, durign and after the Civil War, so slavery was a part of the story. It is a great film and well done for it's time. All the special effects were real, no CGI here.
@@freedomlover622 I think that was all love tho was in her head. I think some way she loved Rett but wouldn't admit it to herself. Because she always believed Ashley was the better man and loved her. She didn't realize she was wrong until it's too late and lost the right man for her.
Gone with the Wind is not a documentary, so why think it should be exactly historically accurate? This canceling makes me think of book burning. Not good.
That's a hyperbole and you know it. HBO taking it down briefly doesn't cause the film to cease to exist. I still have my copy on DVD and my book. It still plays on network television at least three times a year. You can still buy it on Google Play, Itunes and your own copy on DVD. Just because one network pulls it doesn't mean it ceases to exist. Netflix is planning on pulling Friends to make room for more new stuff is that censoring Friends?
@@stevenbrock528 We already have disclaimers up on a ton of movies regarding other things people find offensive. That is the whole reason for the ratings system in the first place. It is no different. Platforms are allowed to choose what they put up. If you have a problem with it be a good little capitalist and start your own platform.
@@katiest.vincent4283 And who says they won't cave again further once the cancel culture outrage mob on Twitter throws another fit about it being there even with a disclaimer. If you give them.an inch, they'll then demand a mile and the cycle will never end.
The historic context is that this film was made in 1939 *, in THAT manner. Glorifying the lifestyle of the slaveholding "aristocrats", neither the struggles of slaves nor the white families that did not profit at all from slavery was mentioned in any way. The not rich white males became cannon fodder, their families had to make do w/o them (or they were disabled). * based on a book from 1936, that seem to be long, so maybe it is not quite as much of a whitewash.
Series and films are pulled all the time, bringin it back with some historic context is not at all like bookburning. The heroine gets into trouble because of the war, but the reason for the war is not touched. (or that the slaves were not allowed to learn to read - speaking of books)
Hattie McDaniel was the first black person to win an Oscar for her role. Yes she played a stereotypical role based on today's standards, but back then there were different standards
Adam Infinity It would have been infinitely worse to have had a white personal playing a slave in the south during the Civil War period. She is the representation of conscience and wisdom in the story and played it perfectly. Kinda nice to have had the moral authority in the movie be a slave. It works on many levels.
I think that's why Whoopi has the view point she has...Color Purple depiction of blacks in that movie is a little tough to watch....from a female perspective.
Apparently they can. They do it all the time. I will not go into details because TH-cam will delete my comment. Because they don't want the truth to be told. I will give you a hint tho. Alex Haley, the author of "Roots", admitted that he made up the part about Europeans going inland in Africa to "kidnap" or "steal" Africans. The FACT is that Africans enslaved other Africans for centuries and they sold off millions to all comers, e.g., the Arabs and the Ottoman Turks, long before Europeans ever got involved. There was a long used Saharan slave caravan route to the east that delivered African slaves to the Arabs and Turks. Europeans didn't capture African slaves themselves because they had no immunity to the local tropical diseases. Besides, the dominant Africans who enslaved their fellow Africans took them to ports on the coast where the Europeans could just buy them or trade for European goods.
You can't improve the present or future by removing the past. HBO shouldn't have to include a disclaimer before showing "Gone With the Wind." The fact that the movie was made nearly 100 years ago should speak for itself. If people can't understand that, they probably can't read, and if they can't read, how would they understand such a disclaimer?
premiere Dec. 1939 (start WW2 in Europe Sep. 1939) that is NOT 100 years. And historic context should be given, starting with the fact that it was a whitewash for the still resentful South that could indulge itself in celebrating the good old days. The ruling class that profited from slavery and thus could finance an aristocratic lifestyle were shown resp. the strugles were depicted to get back to that level after the lost war. The heroine is a woman that is supposed to have weathered even the upset of the aristocratic lifestyle of the rich of that time - for whose interest the whole war was fought. btw in the beginning rich people could evade the draft (pay their way out). The many white males that were low income and had no slaves certainly did not profit from it, even though they had been brainwashed into thinking they had skin of the game. They were cannon fodder and their families and widows had to manage w/o them (or a disabled man). THEY and of course the struggle of black people do not exist in that glorified version of Southern Life of the rich and beautiful.
not fiction but part of U.S. history - in 1939: The black actors did not participate in the premiere festivities in Atlanta in Dec. 1939, The black maid / nanny (of Scarlett) got an Oscar for her supporting role. from Wikipedia: Hattie McDaniel was also absent (an an actor tht returned to the U.K. to enlist), as she and the other black cast members were prevented from attending the premiere due to Georgia's Jim Crow laws, which kept them from sitting with their white colleagues. Upon learning that McDaniel had been barred from the premiere, Clark Gable threatened to boycott the event, but McDaniel persuaded him to attend. (My take: not even on a separate table !) President Jimmy Carter later recalled it (autoparade, the premiere in Atlanta over 3 days, costume ball, etc.) as "the biggest event to happen in the South in my lifetime". Premieres in New York and Los Angeles followed. When the black actress got the Oscar she was allowed to be present - but at segregated tables. That is a relevant part of American history at the beginning of WW2 in Europe.

They DID get a pass back then and now they don’t, people evolve and change. If you don’t know history you’re doomed to repeat it.
We need movies, art and things that allow us to see differing points of view and the repercussions of certain views and actions. I also don't believe we need a pathetic disclaimer telling us if something is wrong or bad. We should be able to see wrong , see the hurt and pain and this will make us feel and think.
If people saw that it was wrong/bad, they wouldn't be fighting so hard to keep it. Like confederate statues that were erected in order to intimidate freed slaves/blacks fighting for civil rights. Ask white America about it today and they go on bleating about the need to remember our history even though they do everything they can to forget the parts of history that they don't like. So you want the movie to stay up and you are also opposed to information explaining the fuller ramifications of why the movie is problematic. That's why members of Congress in 2019 didn't know that the US government instituted mass imprisonment of Japanese-Americans during WWII. That's why people don't know that the US government infected people with syphilis and other STDs in Guatemala in the 1940s (and the people who were involved were receiving accolades/had schools named after them). You don't care about racism and the impact on people? Fine? But don't pretend that your concern is only for 'art' because that's just bull.

So, I think people need disclaimers to tell them that some things are just wrong. I mean people are still hanging on to the Confederate flag and saying stupid stuff like "The South shall rise again!" You have people out there that really think the South won the Civil War. This country is very uneducated when it comes to our own history. They also don't do any research on their own. Some one tells them an opinion and they take it as fact - so that it is one ignorant person teaching another. The Americans, these disclaimers are geared to, are lazy to learn the truth or they just don't want to know because it tilts their whole bubble on its head. Sorry, but I have seen too many people's uneducated response to things about history in the last few weeks to know that our education system is also being tested. See how this "woke" is going over the top?... Now Hattie McDaniels is being forgotten of her roles "albeit, prejudice story writing" because we are getting too caught up with slapping history overnight. It's too much.
Looking objectively at GWTW, most of the black characters are wiser and more honorable than the white characters (excepting Melanie). The most egregious mistake in the transfer to film was that the novel had explained that the character of Prissy had a disability and this is not clarified in the movie.
Don't forget Rhett Butler. While he was white, he was the only one who said the South wouldn't win the war, and that the Union would defeat them. I believe his exact words were "I think it's hard winning a war with words, gentlemen. . . . I'm saying very plainly that the Yankees are better equipped than we. . . . All we've got is cotton and slaves, and arrogance."
That was MeAgain, inserting her looming motherhood into this issue and EVERY SINGLE issue yet to come. Wait until she actually gives birth... she’ll not be stopped from opining of it.
I dont think people get it. Mammy was the smartest, most grounded and intelligent character in the 4 hour movie. The writers were certainly ahead of their time.
@@barbarashepherd2205 nowadays we have to be "politically correct" about everything. Whoopi is right. We would have to go to exhausted routes to go through every film, tv show, theatrical release and of course, books and so forth to get everything "politically correct" these days. It is better to have a discussion on these issues with entertainment related content. As whoopi said, just address it with your children and educate people so they know better.
it's just an algorithm if the word appears its going to produce a link to something they can sell even if you search i hate gone with the wind the movie will apear first.
Well figuratively it has already begun. Amazon is starting to deny booksellers. I mean, they have a right but they also pretty much hold a monopoly on the industry...it’s crazy times..
John Tuya that’s fluid. People ‘under 25’ have watched “those types of movies” for decades. And if you think it’s not a slippery slope, then I can assure you, wisdom comes with age.
I thought Sunny's facial expressions were rude. The View and everyone else in the world has been focusing on BLM for nearly two weeks. Must every minute of the day be taken up by this? Gone With The Wind is a classic flim that many of us were raised with. And now, because Miss Sunny thinks it is insignifcant to discuss, we must not? Please.
Yep, part of the whitewash. I read the novel the Ya Ya sistes. 2 generations in the South, one girls attends the permiere of Gone with the wind in Atltanta in 1939 (or plans to). - one sentence I got from the book (the young woman from the second generation reflects on it: the children of white middle class families were raised by black women and often loved them. But at some point in time they had to learn to become segregationist. The novel is much more realistic that the romanticized version of the life of Southern aristocrats before during and after the Civil War
Mammy could be forced to go to another family member or been sold to strangers (let's say the one person that made sure she would be treated like a human died). Now, if she was the nanny and beloved she probably had some protection. But of course a family member of the nanny could be sold away and there was nothing she cold do about it. And slaves were not allowed to learn to read so they could not write letters to familiy members that had been sold away. someone else. Nannies and servants of the aristocracy in the U.K. _could_ leave. And they were owed a pension at some time (by cultural norms the employers had to take care of long time servants, no legal claim). at which point they left and returned to their family. Likewise it was not unusual to be visited by the forme employer.
If we are going to have movies such as Gone with the Wind to be removed. I would also say that anything that is referencing any form of African Americans in a derogatory way to be removed as well that includes rap music, rap videos, Hip Hop, BET and the "N" word that has been made a form of Term of endearment in the African American community which it isnt and should not be... As an African American man we have to also stop looking from the external to change things but also look at our internal self to change things
True I'm a white pro Confederate dixiecrat southerner but I agree if we have to take things that are offensive to one group than it has to go both ways
Man she really thinks this white person is awful and I’m Native American, I’m actually Mandan- one of the most rare natives and my native mom who gave me those beautiful genes loves gone with the wind- it’s her favorite movie and she has told me that my whole life. You mainstream people are fucked up and don’t know what it means to be a real person with normal family anymore - you’re a bunch of elitist freaks that normal people loathe. Absolutely loathe or look up to and that is disturbing
But in Huck Finn they showed how poorly blacks were treated, and that some people (few) treated them well. It was a better depiction than the happy, singing plantation 'workers'. The biggest complaint people had was with N* Joe's name. A rough name by todays standards, but accurate for the time. Gone With The Wind, Song Of The South, and so many others were never accurate by any stretch of the imagination. A disclaimer in front of the movie is not a bad idea. A good time to teach about Hattie McDaniel - she was the first black person to win an Oscar, but was not allowed - by law - to go to the premiere, or to sit with the other actors at the Oscar ceremony. Hopefully the disclaimer they add will address this.
Why just black movies what about cowboy and indians movies or war movies with japan ??? If we get rid of everything and if cops was bad than why has it been on for 20 years ???
Just because something has gone one doesn’t mean it’s a good thing I’d keep cops going but I’m just saying , this issue where America is at is because not enough listened before and it took more wrong-doing to get here
"Some one like MEGHAN Kelly spent all morning tweeting about this" I might not agree with Sunny a lot but god she is great a subtlety dragging Meghan. Get her Jade!
Those who don't even know history are doomed to do even worse. Movies like Gone With The Wind and Green Book are romanticized versions of the trauma and brutalization that black people endured. I am not going to protest about it but I am sorry its not history at ALL.
Sunny's face throughout this segment is priceless. Of course, Meghan makes it all about herself. She's gone from reminding us she's John McCain's daughter to constantly reminding us she's pregnant.
I was sitting with my mouth open. This the 3rd time I have seen her shoe-horn her pregnancy into something totally unrelated.😂😂 Total mental lightweight!! 🙄
The activists won't stop at statues, films, comedies, book, plays etc will all end up on the fire. Puritanism is back but the religious element now is replaced with political ideology.
God, your a little drama queen aren't you? This is one streaming platform out of many. One that isn't even taking it down forever. You can relax Gone WIth the Wind isn't going anywhere.
Why is it that so many people look at things like "Gone With The wind", a story of the 19th Century story, with the mindset of the 21st Century ideals. In the 19th Century, in the South knew slavery as a way of their lives!
I mean, it's kind of a refreshing break from discussion about Covid-19, Trump and protests that dominate the conversation every other minute of the day.
@@marthawoodworth6907 Why not? Don't the black actors in the film deserve to have their hard work be shown? It's not their fault they had no other choice but to take on these offensive portrayals and they did so with as much grace and humanity they were afforded. If we suddenly expunged EVERY film that may be offensive to black people then we would be erasing the filmography and legacies of these black actors. It's so ridiculous.
@s s The Civil Rights Act was signed in 1964. That means that when Sandord & Son/The Jeffersons started filming, it was only about 10 years after legal discrimination against black people in this country was abolished. Every person over the age of 10 grew up in a country where they could not drink out the same water fountains as white people, if they were older they grew up in a country that did not allow blacks to attend the same schools as whites and they grew up in a country where they had to give up their seats for white people on buses or face arrest. In the 1970s when these shows were filmed many neighborhoods still had covenants prohibiting the sale of homes to black people and the public was learning that the US government had knowingly witheld syphilis treatment from black men for 40 years (while lying to them about their status and allowing them to die slow, painful deaths) because they know that no one would be concerned about what happened to 'negroes.' But yeah. I guess being called a honkey by the people who were directly impacted by segregation in this country is exactly the same thing. Idiot.
That movie and any movie, book, etc is our first amendment right! Our right to create it and consume it-whether you like the content or not. It is your choice to watch it or not.
Well it was a well made movie and that of the Actors performances were well acted for that time. I'll give you that Having never read I'll the book I'll just have too take your word for it. You staying how well made and produced the products and skill set was however doesn't take away the fact that it was a almost one sided presentation of life in the Southern United States. As far as my point of view goes the only saving grace in that film was the acting chops of Hattie MacDonald and Clark Gable. If it wasn't for them the movie would be nothing more than a well shot film with nice costumes. 😏
How did Meghan get her degree in Art History if all she can add to a conversation about art is that it could potentially be an interesting conversation?
I agree, we should remember her and her story, not even being allowed in the theater during the ceremony of the Oscars because of segregation. She had to wait in the hall and IF she won they would sneak her in the back.
Gone with the Wind is my all-time favorite movie. I even own the DVD and watch it every year. I LOVE the character of Mammy. The actress absolutely deserved her Oscar win. If we hide our history away how can people avoid such mistakes (like racism) in the future?
I've watched gone with the wind many times, it does "glamorize" the period it's set in...but I've never said to myself "gee I wish I lived in the Antebellum south during the civil war and had a mammy" like Joy said it's a bunch of bologna
@Michael Anderson I disagree. The vast majority of "the left" (whatever that means) is opposed to cancel culture and many other things. This is a false narrative that is just incredibly divisive and doesn't help at all. From a "leftie".
Didnt Sunny just say they were gonna bring it back with more context? Sooo whats the issue? Not like they said they were taking it down forever, deleting scenes or dialogue. It will be back!
They're going to return the film "eventually" only it'll have "a discussion of its historical context” while denouncing its racial missteps. I can almost guarantee the person behind this decision is white because the whole thing screams "white apologist". If anything it's an insult to the intelligence of their viewers. They seem to think they're so obtuse and culturally ignorant they need a seminar explaining why a story set in Civil War/Antebellum Georgia centering around a cotton planation proprietress and her house slaves may be a bit racist by today's standards. Are they going to take "The Wizard of Oz" down with a "don't shoot the messenger" discussion about the dehumanizing portrayals of little people as "singing midgets" and that they were paid less than the canine actor who played Toto? By doing this they have to be prepared to apologize for ALL the offensive movies of the past.
Gone with the Wind and other films of the time, should not be pulled. Our demand, as black people, is not that the world should be all black all the time, but equal representation. Equal treatment under the law and respect! If their response is to pull a film, then they've actually missed the point. Censorship is a cowardly response to a social injustice. Rather than discuss it and acknowledge the issue, and take responsibility, just hide it for a moment. Totally wrong.
On the contrary, I personally thought that Megan reacted rather gracefully to Sunny's outright "this isn't an important topic" dismissiveness. I think she grew quite a lot lately.
But Sunny is right, some people are more shocked that a movie is removed from a platform than the fact that black people are regularly murdered by cops and suffer from racism every day. Meghan always spin the conversation when real issues are on the table or here proposed a stupid hot topic compared to everything that has been happening.
@Michael Anderson your right there is things I don't like or offends me but I don't get upset and demand it get removed and wiped of the face of the earth. The problem is today people are getting away with everything now, this is only the beginning. The civil war is coming!
Really? There are Asians that find that depiction offensive. Especially those who've been mocked. Don t use your ethnicity to discount the experiences of other people like yourself and speak for them, you can just speak for yourself and say it doesnt offend you. There's an organization that works on Asian representation in the media and they've denounced such films. I remember that when Gwen Stefani had the harujuku girls there was an Asian woman at my university that was very upset at Gwen have a group of asian women follow her on press tours and not be allowed to talk but just do stereotypical actions. Another asian girl I knew did not care and loved all the products. I decided against getting the products because I think when it comes to respecting different races, its best to not make caricatures of them. I also would love if ppl stopped watching Breakfast at Tiffany's.
Watch it and understand why mocking and "whitewashing" (casting white people in non-white roles) is wrong. You won't understand why it's wrong unless you see for yourself the ignorant way in which people used to think and act.
censorship is a dangerous road to begin. You would have to get rid of so many films and books. What Whoopi said is a great idea. Put an explanation in the beginning of the book or film. Also, parents need to explain to their kids what they are seeing and that some of the depictions are not correct.
Meghan your child is not even born yet and you worry about what you will tell your child??????? Stupid woman who are you trying to impress. You know what you will tell your child
I’ve been opposed to censorship for a long time; especially on subjects I don’t agree with. Censorship doesn’t start conversations, it (tries to) stymie it.
bubu joo Estes makes sense. I thought about how I’d explain the world to my kids before my first was born. I think about how to teach them about navigating through their lives and both are under the age of 10.
Northern “writing our culture?” What does that even mean? Do you mean language? “You” stripped away the blacks’ identity, *forcing* them to learn a new language. Is that what you’re referring to? This is why history needs to be revealed.
Gone with the wind is one of the beloved and most popular movies of all time because when hbo max has gone with the wind back and it better be clean and censored
I remember watching this when it was first on TV back in 1976. Believe me, even 44 years ago we were rolling our eyes at this idyllic southern view of slavery. But to me GWTW was always a love story and about just how much damage holding fast to an unrequited love can do. That and how that which does not kill you might just make you ruthless. That is what the war did to Scarlett.
If people NEED context on an almost 100 year old movie...... it shows how pathetic society has become. And how erasing history is only going to make it worse.
Why would you remove Cops when there are other "reality" cop shows on the ID network? Shouldn't those be removed as well if you are going by that standard?
wow almost 100 years!! It hits me like a truck. Vivien Leigh’s splendor is still so active.
My kids don't know what a typewriter is
You make no sense
Its all about racism
So a false depiction of history is fine, but adding context to explain that depiction is wrong?
She was the first black person to win an Oscar. Why on earth would you get rid of it?
Why on earth would the change the name of a pancake mix that’s been around for almost 100 years!! These SJWS don’t realize that Aunt Jemima signed a contract to be the spokes person & allowed her name & image to be used!! She died a very wealthy woman & there was never a complaint until these racist now!!
Cause it’s black lives matter......it’s political correctness. AGAIN! They don’t see it.
Gary Newcomb agreed her family is furious they are trying to erase her
Gary Newcomb The thing is Aunt Jemima is a very harmful stereotype that places black women who look like her in the same pool.
BabyAnie my god people are so pathetic. It’s a culture issue not because of a box mix or a movie 🙄
Soon they’ll say slavery was a myth like some did the holocaust 🤦🏾♀️
Plus, Mammy was the smartest and wisest person in the movie. She may have been a 'servant' but she didn't shy away from telling Scarlett, Rhett or anyone else what to do !
Also what I love about Gone With The Wind is that Rhett, someone she's serving, highly respected Mammy. He bought her an expensive petticoat to show his appreciation for her. I'm sure that many slave owners didn't do that. And for those who consider Scarlett canon, Mammy was buried with that petticoat on. She was highly valued and treated well!
That actress won an Oscar for her role in this film. Stop the film and you aren't honoring her memory as the firt black woman to win a major award
Hattie was first black woman to receive award...
She's not a servant, she was a slave. I doubt she was paid.
@@Ray03595 youre missing the point, if they could, they would (wipe it out from all platforms everywhere).

Jennifer Powers sounds like Fahrenheit 451... lol which is a book lol...similar premise ...
ryan tabb and 1984. Wall E as well. An animated movie.
The Rainbow Rhapsody wall E is a good example & Demolition Man is another!!
If they're gonna boycott a film, do the birth of a nation, it is far more racist than GWTW
Whoopie hit the nail on the head 30 seconds in. If you start removing fictional films because they aren't historically accurate we're gonna be left with about 20 movies. It's a ridiculous precedent to set.
It is good to have those films as teachable moments to showcase the inspiration behind them and the political climate at the time.
Your defense of bigotry seems pure...
This country is being pussified little by little
And no one is ever outraged about video games or movies when a person has to be shot 50 times to die. And 30 min later, they're alive again.🙄
Censorship is never the answer. You can't deny history; it's important to evaluate history and learn from it.
Schools Do It All The Time
Gotta tell the full truth, not just the truth of the majority

History is history - no time machine exists to change it. If you ignore it - it will be repeated !
No one is ignoring it. It still exists. Movies get removed from streaming platforms all the time for a whole host of reasons.
Are you a moron? The film was removed for its false depiction of the Era it was made in. How do yall not get that?
The movie was not removed at all. They just put a disclaimer at the beginning.
I thought it got removed for having false depictions...

I love All those old Movies! I have Gone with The Wind! Let's move on to more important issues !
Good point!
I wouldn’t mind that at all
Ha no kidding. You really think these companies really care about racism? Really? Every decision is for that $$$
Bloop!
And the black woman who won was not even allowed to attend the Oscars.
No one gets rix of the movie, it will be reuploaded with some context given.

It would have been infinitely worse to have had a white personal playing a slave in the south during the Civil War period. She is the representation of conscience and wisdom in the story and played it perfectly. Kinda nice to have had the moral authority in the movie be a slave. It works on many levels.
...and she wasn’t allowed to attend the ceremony to receive that award. Sad
Hattie McDaniel should be celebrated. She had this significant accomplishment decades before the Civil Rights Movement.

Gone with the wind is fiction...dummy
I grew up watching Gone With the Wind, and also Roots. It is possible to distinguish false narratives when given more information to judge from.
And Song of the South and Pinocchio
And YouTurd Censorship.
1939, The black maid / nanny (of Scarlett) got an Oscar for her supporting role. from Wikipedia:
Hattie McDaniel was also absent (an an actor tht returned to the U.K. to enlist), as she and the other black cast members were prevented from attending the premiere due to Georgia's Jim Crow laws, which kept them from sitting with their white colleagues.
Upon learning that McDaniel had been barred from the premiere, Clark Gable threatened to boycott the event, but McDaniel persuaded him to attend.
(My take: not even on a separate table !)
President Jimmy Carter later recalled it (autoparade, the premiere in Atlanta over 3 days, costume ball, etc.) as "the biggest event to happen in the South in my lifetime".
Premieres in New York and Los Angeles followed.
When the black actress got the Oscar she was allowed to be present - but at segregated tables.
That is a relevant part of American history at the beginning of WW2 in Europe.
@@xyzsame4081 No, it shouldn't. It's not HBO's responsibility to educate people about slavery in America. It can if it wants, but it doesn't have to. I disagree vehemently police brutality and discrimination but now you have to be so careful of what you say.PC all the time.I am exhausted.
So all the men who sexually abused women because it was once "acceptable" now get a pass?
Martha Woodworth No not at all. What I mean is don’t cover it up. Taking bad words out of books. Changing stories from the past because it’s uncomfortable nowadays. We need to leave history the way it is so we can learn from it. Those men absolutely don’t get a pass. You proved my point exactly.
@@patriciae3082 maybe people should read the full MLK speech where near the end he told of going to the white house to demand that check. If you forget the past you will repeat it some things should be viewed as reminders

Well.....we still have to post warning signs at gas pumps so people won't: smoke while fueling, swallow the gas, to keep their face, eyes, etc away from the nozzle while refilling, don't siphon by mouth, etc. So, yeah, there is still enough super ignorant people out there who don't have common sense nor do they know right from wrong if we still have to post the warnings about gasoline. The Americans, these disclaimers are geared to, are lazy to learn the truth or they just don't want to know because it tilts their whole bubble on its head. the children of white middle class families were raised by black women and often loved them.

Those who don't even know history are doomed to do even worse. Movies like Gone With The Wind and Green Book are romanticized versions of the trauma and brutalization that black people endured. I am not going to protest about it but I am sorry its not history at ALL.
Stale clichés unite!
@@timothy8425 exactly
Already repeating.
@Dan Wruck yes it does in the same way that a superhero movie opens discussion about a make believe world.
@@katiest.vincent4283 stop trying to ignore the real situation
Why is it that so many people look at things like "Gone With The wind", a story of the 19th Century story, with the mindset of the 21st Century ideals. In the 19th Century, in the South knew slavery as a way of their lives!
Mehgan: This is a conversation I picked and I think its an interesting conversation to have a conversation about his because its a conversation.
I mean, it's kind of a refreshing break from discussion about Covid-19, Trump and protests that dominate the conversation every other minute of the day.
What is How do you make systemic racism in movies about a white rich politician daughter ? Alex for 400
Me-again Meghan strikes again 🤦🏻♀️
How did she manage to make the topic about her and does she ever chill
We gotta have more robust conversations.
I agree with Whoopi, it’s silly to remove this film. Just put up a disclaimer like Disney has done with some of their content.
@Michael Anderson Actually "purposeful ignorance" is the most dangerous religion.
Why should even one black child have to see this film? Disclaimers almost make it worse. Like putting a bandaid on a dead body.
@Michael Anderson What in your statement was fact? It was pure opinion.
Martha Woodworth Who’s forcing anyone to watch it? If it’s not your type of movie then don’t watch it. Simple.
I'm sorry, Gone With the Wind is a classic.
In America, there are a lot of classics that are also racist
What is it about really? I keep hearing the title since I was a kid. I never seen it.
In the 1970s when these shows were filmed many neighborhoods still had covenants prohibiting the sale of homes to black people and the public was learning that the US government had knowingly witheld syphilis treatment from black men for 40 years (while lying to them about their status and allowing them to die slow, painful deaths) because they know that no one would be concerned about what happened to 'negroes.'
But yeah. I guess being called a honkey by the people who were directly impacted by segregation in this country is exactly the same thing. Idiot.
Devine from Brooklyn but that doesn’t mean it isn’t a classic. This is true in the world all over
@s s white people are not getting killed left and right.
That movie and any movie, book, etc is our first amendment right! Our right to create it and consume it-whether you like the content or not. It is your choice to watch it or not.
I'm an adult and can think for my self .
Sunny is not playing today!😂
Period!
I love her 🤎
No sunny is her usual racist self
Wait Meghan spoke for all that time only to say it’s interesting over and over again 🙄🤦🏽♂️🤦🏽♂️
And that she started the topic
She can already go to maternity leave 😒😒
Can talk wallpaper off a wall
Oooh my lord!!! This going too far
I don’t think they should get rid of it. Art tells a story, no matter how ugly that story is. Let’s use it as a learning tool. Whoopi said it best.
People REALLY need to grow up, get a spine and get past themselves.
The past is like a foreign country, they do things differently there.
Just that institutional racism rears it’s ugliness in our world everyday
Strawberry Cream slavery was never acceptable
Gone with the wind is a fine movie and a amazing book.
Well it was a well made movie and that of the Actors performances were well acted for that time. I'll give you that
Having never read I'll the book I'll just have too take your word for it.
And remember the first black woman to win an Oscar ever
Exactly
I’m a leftie and I love this film. I agree it does glamorise slavery, but also shows the comeuppance of the Confederacy.
@Michael Anderson I disagree. The vast majority of "the left" (whatever that means) is opposed to cancel culture and many other things. This is a false narrative that is just incredibly divisive and doesn't help at all. From a "leftie".
I agree with Whoopy !!!
Absolutely
She was spot on!
@@sammmmmm-b3j Totally !!
Yeah , I agree, but the blaxploitation films, we are the heroes. But I understand what she’s saying.
Whoopie comparing Coffee to Gone with the Wind... is a false equivalency
Pandering to the audience I call this. You don't have to 'protect' us from a movie, HBO Max!
Anyone see Colberts clip about Meghan yesterday? Lol.
When Kamala made a fool of her about defunding? Lol
Thanks for giving me something to search for.
I'm going to go see
Tooning out the news segment
No but I'll go look it up
Didnt Sunny just say they were gonna bring it back with more context? Sooo whats the issue? Not like they said they were taking it down forever, deleting scenes or dialogue. It will be back!
People just want something to be mad at.
Republican speak: viewed as racist
Instead of 'is' racist.
you should seriously read 1984 and if you say you have already red the book you obviously didn't understand it.
this is not a party issue you idiot.
@@LL3L. People like Javier think 1984 was an instruction manual.
I have canceled my HBO Max account when they pulled it and I'll cancel HBO as well.
Someone should have advised Meghan not to dress like Mammy in "Gone With The Wind" for this segment.
Hilarious 😆😆😆😆

Hahahahahahaha
So true. She's annoying and gross 🤢
I love Sunny, she's been really delivering lately
Sunny is always delivering logically and with such brilliance.
Megan completely took Sunny’s point the wrong way... its so frustrating
On the contrary, I personally thought that Megan reacted rather gracefully to Sunny's outright "this isn't an important topic" dismissiveness. I think she grew quite a lot lately.
@@theplaylister Exactly
But Sunny is right, some people are more shocked that a movie is removed from a platform than the fact that black people are regularly murdered by cops and suffer from racism every day. Meghan always spin the conversation when real issues are on the table or here proposed a stupid hot topic compared to everything that has been happening.
History should not be erased. You learn from history.
WTF! Gone with the Wind is amazing! I love that movie! OMG!
This is so stupid if you don't like it DON'T WATCH IT ! People are so dumb to make this a subject.
Ok but you're point is 10 years too late
Agreed. I watch what I like. This discussion is so stupid!
I'm sure your not BLACK??
@Michael Anderson we could say the same about y'all
@Michael Anderson your right there is things I don't like or offends me but I don't get upset and demand it get removed and wiped of the face of the earth. The problem is today people are getting away with everything now, this is only the beginning. The civil war is coming!
I don't know a single Asian who's offended by Breakfast at Tiffany's. It's a movie..if you don't like it, don't watch.
You do realize the Asian population around the world is approximately 7.5 billion (not counting partial Asian descent)
You can tell your child that your ancestors were slave owners and how they were beaten and killed.
If you wanna teach someone change the history books in schools and tell everyone the truth about this country
Amen 🙏🏻
It goes both ways cos our own black brotherhood need to start reading a book instead bitching when something doesn't go our way.
Cops yes, GWTW no! The first film where a Black woman won an Oscar!
Sonny has a look on her face while megan is talking that says F you.
Sunny's face when Meghan was talking😂😂😂
Omg. Pull everything that ever reflected any historical context. Can't stand cancel culture.
Whites don't even have a culture...
Northern “writing our culture?” What does that even mean? Do you mean language? “You” stripped away the blacks’ identity, *forcing* them to learn a new language. Is that what you’re referring to? This is why history needs to be revealed.
Ice Adonis white People do. It’s Starbucks and the misuse of the 2nd Amendment
My question is, why is Gone With the Wind on Hbomax anyway?? It's always on TCM. And Meghan, her name is Hattie McDaniels!!!
