@@jamesmcinnis208 Here's an idea, Marilyn Monroe wanted was a serial abuse victim. Drugged and dragged around. What if Marilyn Monroe wanted peace. Vivien was the type of woman who spoke her mind way ahead of time. That is what I'm saying. IMO People turned the wrong person into a role-model-icon. Perhaps my preference would be she is spoken of more than MM, yes; and perhaps its been that way for years. If you want to discuss the basis of Montgomery Clift's alcoholism or the divahood of a lost icon, this is not the place. Cheers. Excuse me.

I was charmed by this too - but what he's describing would have been fascinating to know the details of. Vivian Leigh died in 1967, so this remaster wouldn't have used any of the digital techniques we think of today. GWTW is an especially tricky negative to work with, because early color filming involved using three strips of film simultaneously running through red, green, and blue filters, so there are 3 negatives, not just 1, and striking prints involved lining them up exactly so the edges of one color didn't bleed into another, which became increasingly difficult as the old negatives started to warp and curl. But this may not have been a remaster at all, just a new print struck from a well-preserved internegative (a copy of the negative made back in the day so you could generate prints of the film without running the delicate original negative through machinery). Even in this case, there was nothing automatic about making prints in the photochemical days, when the brightness and color of the light used to strike the print would have affected the colors of the print.

@@craigrussell3062I was thinking the same thing...actors love anecdotes but autobiographies are notoriously unreliable when it comes to dates and timelines...still...I guess the general idea of the story will be true...if he celebrated his 21 th birthday with her this would have been july 1961..exactly the time she and Jack Merivale( her " boyfriend" as Stewart puts it) embarked on a long internatonal tour with the Old Vic Company....with indeed Patrick Stewart in tow to Australia and beyond.
The print of GWTW they watched would have been the 1961 re-release which had been hyped up by a star studded gala premiere in the US earlier that year also attented by Leigh...

Patrick makes this strangely, subtly moving. What a gentleman to speak so lovingly of a long gone star, fragile Vivien Leigh. What a poignant, touching story by Patrick Stewart about the great Vivien Leigh. Patrick is spellbinding telling of sitting next to Ms. Leigh in the theater and noticing that she wept at times during the showing of GWTW and then had to leave because of how emotional it was for her that some of her dear costars in the movie were no longer alive. I wonder if the "boyfriend" with Ms. Leigh was Jack Merivale.

This reminds me of an event that was a genuine blessing in my youth… I was fortunate enough to see Patrick Stewart perform with the Royal Shakespeare Company. It was way back in 1980 or 1981. This was back before his stratospheric rise to fame. Roughly around the time of “Lifeforce” and “Excalibur”… he had a small, supporting role in each movie. It was obvious Patrick Stewart was the leader. He displayed an excellent sense of humor. If William Shakespeare was alive today, he would ask for Patrick Stewart’s autograph.
