The final scene with Scarlett crying on the stairs, as familiar voices lead her back to Tara is DOS's idea. He explains in his memos that when he brought this idea to his team they were skeptical and thought it wouldn't work, of course he imposed his point of view. And it gave us one of the most beautiful scenes in the history of cinema.

For what it is worth, imho, Scarlett realized just after Melanie's death, how much she loved and depended on Melanie; plus, she finally saw the real Ashley. He was a rather weak man, unlike Rhett, and that thought finally jolted her to come to her senses.

But once she realized just how love worthy Melanie was amd how much she herself loved her, she finally understood that Ashley really loved Melanie. No, I think you are wrong. Rhett Butler saw exactly who was Scarlett : a childish personality who breaks her toys. He said something deep after rejoining the confederates at the last moment and being slapped by Scarlett : I love the lost causes. Of course he was referring to his unrequited love for Scarlett and his desperate attempt to be loved by her. No Scarlett O'Hara never loved Melanie or Rhett. She only regretted to have lost them.......HUGE DIFFERENCE ! The only thing she constantly loved was Tara. A plantation.
I remember watching this as a young teen. The end broke my heart and I called my grandma because she read the book and maybe that had a different ending. But this movie is unforgettable! ❤ the greatest movie of all time.

I first saw the movie when I was 11 and have been enthralled with GWTW ever since 💚
The idea of the story closing with the focus on Tara and returning home isn't an idea unique to Selznick. It comes directly from the novel itself, which ends with Scarlett's thoughts turning towards Tara and its unfailing ability to heal her.
Perhaps the problem Selznick faced wasn't how to make the ending less sad, but rather how to represent Scarlett's thoughts. The making-of documentary included in the version I used for this review did not mention that about the book.
The documentary is misleading. It does make it sound like Selznick came up with the idea when he was desperately trying to decide upon a good ending. The truth is that Sidney Howard ended his original screenplay with the three voices (Gerald, Ashley, Rhett) coming back to Scarlett in her mind. Selznick (with the help of other writers) did make considerable changes to Howard’s original work; however, the entire end of the movie (from Melanie’s death scene to THE END) was filmed exactly as written by Howard 😇
BIG EDIT: Oops! Now *I* stand corrected! I just re-read the introduction to the book GWTW: The Screenplay (Collier/McMillan, 1980), and it explains that Howard’s original ending was brief and anticlimactic and, not surprisingly, to Selznick’s liking. (Sorry! It’s been a while since I’ve read the introduction to this book!) The screenplay printed in this book “takes Sidney Howard’s adaptation as a base and adds to it material written by the other sixteen (count ‘em!) collaborators.” The final scene in this book appears just as in the film, but apparently it was indeed one of the scenes re-written by Selznick, and he sent it to the set (just in time!) on June 8. I’m glad I was able to find this specific information and correct myself here. Selznick and his team were constantly re-writing scenes, even all during the shooting, so tis a wonder how anyone knows exactly who wrote what!
@@cturtleGA I guess that's what you get when the documentary was produced by the David Selznick's descendants, wasn't it? Lol. Even so, it's clear Selznick was a great producer. And that was what struck me the most about all of it. Producers these days are SO out of touch with theme and how to tell a story.

Selznick WAS a great producer, and he’s famous (infamous?) for his control of every detail. In the case of GWTW it certainly paid off, and the screenplay in its much-tinkered-with final form certainly ended up working beautifully! 💚

I remember watching it as a child, that scene where Scarlet digs a radish out of the ground and swears to never be hungry ever again. I watched it again yesterday and it is beyond beautiful. What a good film.
After the curtain came down at the premiere in Atlanta, it is said Margaret Mitchell exclaimed that she had "a perfectly wet handkerchief" and that David O. Selznick "had held out for the absolutely perfect cast" to bring to life her book of such length and complexity for her "poor Scarlett." I read "Gone With The Wind," as a child---not once but twice---and was perfectly incandescent as an older child when I had the opportunity to finally see it. There have been so many delighted revisits of both the book and movie over the decades. It does not disappoint and you have reviewed it beautifully in your distillation of "gumption" that lies in Mrs. Mitchell's epic novel and our Scarlett's core; portrayed through the vision of David Selznick and the glorious Vivian Leigh and a stellar cast. Thank you for your review of THE classic movie of the Golden Era amongst the many jewels to chose from therein.

In the ten years from the film until her tragic death, it seems that Mitchell's attitude toward race became much more progressive: She contributed thousands upon thousands of dollars to the local Black college, drove into the segregated part of Atlanta to nurse her housekeeper ill with 'flu when no white people would go there, had a hospital built for Black citizens, and funded many scholarships for Black doctors. PBS American Master's series did an excellent biography on her some years back. Had she lived into the 60's she might very well have supported the civil rights movement of the time.
Stayed up until 4:30 this morning watching this movie. I previously only remembered vague bits and pieces from when I saw some of it as a child… this new viewing has blown me away. What an incredible film.

Your interpretation of one of the themes including Scarlett’s reoccurring “in the mist” dreams was something I had not considered. Excellent insight. Awesome review!
It's in the Novel!! The "running in the mist" section, when she's running for Rhett harks back in the novel to that recurring dream Scarlett always had during her marriage with Rhett. The "running" sequence was also truncated a little bit during post-production and during the sequence's editing -- and before the movie premiered.
I really should read books sometime haha. But there are so many movies! Seriously, I'm thrilled to get all these comments from people who are very familiar with the book.
BSC, reading the book IS quite a time commitment, BUT once you get started you are bound to enjoy it. It’s historically accurate, very moving, and most of all just downright good story-telling. Whenever I read it, I’m always surprised just how entertaining it is, especially for writing that’s 85 years old!

Best movie I have ever saw. Loved Vivian Leigh portrayal of Scarlett. I’ve watched this movie more times than I can count and read the book a few times. Margaret Mitchell was born Nov 8, 1900. I shared her birthday in 1951 when I was born. The costumes, the acting, the sets were out of this world. Still better than any movie out there to this date. I can watch it again and again and never get tired of it, and am always impressed that it seems like it was made so many years ago, but still the best to date. Hearing the music still gives me goose bumps. 💖 wonderful review for a GREAT movie.

Yes I agree what makes this film so memorable above all others is it's portrayal of exactly what life is all about: Love, Loss, and the monumental change that all of us experience in our lifetimes and how we deal with it. The underlying theme of the loss of "safety" either in someone or something is really at the core of our existence, just as it is with Scarlett as she experiences the loss of Tara and ultimately Rhett. After that happens to us we are defined by how we are able to go on, or not. 'Gone with the Wind' gives us the hope of survival.
Here's hoping we all have the tenacity (if not the ruthlessness) of Scarlett.
I've seen lots of excellent films. Yet still, I have one favorite one. "Gone WIth The Wind" remains the one film I treasure above all others. The visuals are stunning; the story is gripping and epic, the acting is stellar.
A worthy choice for sure
Years ago when I saw this the first time at the ending I immediately thought "of course she gets him back, no one can stop her when she makes up her mind". Many viewings later I'm still solid on that part.
The only thing that has changed over the years is I see Margaret Mitchell could have had Melanie & Rhett end up together. I think there is something poetic and beautiful whenever those two are in the same scene or are just speaking about one another.
I'm sad that so many folks seem to misunderstand what this movie is about. I accept it as a product of it's time and differs from modern sensibilities.
I see nothing that glorifies the south. Characters like Scarlett, Rhett, and even the wooden headed Ashley talk of the arrogance and foolishness of the southern cause
I hope I can spread some understanding of this movie

Really superb job--thank you for this. I'm sure you know--and I hope others do--that Turner Films made an absolutely superb documentary called "Gone With the Wind--The Making of a Legend." It won a Peabody award for its excellence. It's a little hard to find, but it does exist. It was on a special DVD of GWTW some years ago. I don't think Amazon has it, but these things change. For true fans of GWTW, this documentary is well worth searching for! Thanks again!💝

I’ve loved this book and movie since I was 11 or 12! Read the book first and then saw the film. GWTW has been my favorite all these years. And, I adore Clark Gable as Rhett Butler! He’s simply awesome. This could never be remade. Love your insights! I still re-read the book about every 10 years or so!

3:40 I am a man I was born in 1976 I saw Olivie de Havilland for the first time in the movie Captain Blood from 1935. Her appearance in the film was not only the appearance of an excellent actress but also an amazing beautiful girl when she was 19 years old she was young and beautiful actually hypnotized me You can it was possible to fall in love with her without memory at first sight. This film, due to her amazing beauty, not only spiritual, but also beauty, was deep in the mine mind. As soon as the news of her death appeared, I immediately remembered her actor creation in this film. I saw Captain Blood on Turner Classic Movies channel YEARS ago. It's time it goes on my watchlist again. Literally all I remember is the gag about the small piece of wood to "shore up" the man's backbone.

When I first saw the movie, I was warned by my mother that "you will realize that you have not seen a movie like this one before, or ever will." Massively great! Boy, was she right! No comparison whatsoever. I have tried to give it the benefit of the doubt with other movies that are considered by some the best movies, but I just can't.

I can't imagine any other actress playing Scarlet . Vivian embodied that character. All the actors were absolutely perfect as and that movie still give me chills and thrills . I have a Special remastered Limited addition DVD's the set includes behind the scenes, personal interviews and special outtakes . I love this film it's too important to call a movie

I used to think that Leslie Howard was miscast as Ashley. However, I now realize the physical description of Ashley in the novel wouldn't have worked in the movie. For the story arc to work, the audience has to know Ashley was never right for Scarlett.
I've been lucky enough to have actually seen it on a big screen more than once.
Excellent and refreshing review of this masterpiece! As a Georgian the book as well as the movie holds a sacred place in my heart. If you’ve not read the book, please take time to do so as it a sweeping epic and fills in many of the blanks of the movie as well as our struggles to survive not only the war but “Reconstruction”. You can also find a a documentary regarding the making of the movie as well as biographical documentary of Mrs. Mitchell. The Atlanta Premier was a three day celebration the likes of which has never been surpassed in Atlanta! Several clips of it are on TH-cam as well. Thank you again for this excellent review.

i watched this few years ago, and i don't really get the characters (plus i'm not an american), though i'm actually an emotional person. now i'm much older and had gone through ups and downs in my relationship-- i totally get her now. rewatching this movie makes me rooting for scarlett and rhett again, the same way i'm rooting for my relationship. a beautiful movie indeed, and even a great review. well done sir, and thank you :)
I am embarrassed to admit I can talk along with the movie...word for word....for the whole 3 hours and 58 minutes!! I even have my own Scarlett, my daughter!! I fell in love with this movie when I was taken to the movies by my Mum..I think it was one of those Mother/Daughter moments. I was about 7 or 8 and am in my 60's now. I have seen it hundreds of times and have collected lobby cards and posters for over 40 years. My book collection has now been shared with my daughter, who was lucky enough to find a first edition in Savannah, Georgia when we visited from Australia as year. She has copies in almost every language it was printed in.I will always love this movie and will continue my tradition of movie, chocolate and tissues!!....Until I die!

Well done analysis. Totally agree. This movie is the greatest because it excels in all categories of script, set, costume, music, editing, and performance. Performance is what I think is where it out does any other motion picture. Principally, the performance of Vivien Leigh. I consider her performance the single best performance of any actor in motion picture history. The other cast are beyond excellent. Clark Gable, Olivia de Haviland, Hattie McDaniel rate as exceptional. It was my Moms favorite movie and I saw it for the first time in a theater when I was 17 after having read the book. It captivated me then and still does.
It's unbelievable. And as much as I love movies and believe in the future of movies, I don't think it will ever be topped. I don't believe public interest in motion pictures will ever be as high as it was in 1939 (movies are no longer the new, exciting form of entertainment), and the storytelling mastery on display in GWTW can hardly be exceeded anyway. It will remain the biggest box office smash in history, and it deserves it.

If you watched the whole video bracing yourself for when I would talk about "problematic" portrayals, and breathed a deep sigh of relief when I didn't even acknowledge the alleged controversy around this movie, then that makes me very happy indeed. On my channel, the only mention of woke-ism you will find is me occasionally making fun of it, and revealing it for the destructive mindset it really is.
And if you want channels specifically devoted to making fun of woke-ism, and pointing out how damaging it is, I'd recommend Overlord DVD, Nerdrotic, and The Critical Drinker.

GWTW is made of up characters with blood in their veins. Margaret Mitchell told the truth about women, men, blacks, yankees and the pressures of modern life stealing your soul against your heritage and your people. Scarlett had gumption and the book sold us on that quality as the driving force of survival. She inherently knew the depth of her own greed and I believe she sought out Ashley to tame her wild Irish soul as her mother had to Gerald. To her mind he brought dignity and redemption. Her refusal to accept that loss was the same blinding force that got her through the war and reconstruction. Melanie understood that Scarlett's gumption was necessary and she forgave her everything because they needed her and she trusted Ashley's honor. It is a great story.

It was done in a way that its impossible not to feel close to those feelings..if u can understands me. Every single day I have to see some scenes and they gaves me strengh. Excellent analysis of my beloved GWTW! I especially liked your statement about how important the performances were. For me, VL as Scarlett is the entire picture. And the theme of survival and gumption was spot on. MM even said so in later interviews. The only thing was I wish you could have gone on longer about my favorite movie. 12 minutes was not enough. I also subscribed and am looking forward to your thoughts on other classic movies. Particularly looking forward to Notorious, my other much adored classic film.

What a brilliant review. I was especially impressed by the observation that the saturated colours contribute to captivating us and giving us the sense of having spent a lifetime with the characters. I think Steiner's music helps too; GWTW is the closest we come to an opera, I think. In any rate, there's something about the film that remains unsurpassable, still today.

This movie has had an impact on my life. I have seen it several times over 40 years. Each time I see this movie I see it with different eyes. Totally fascinating
It's a lot to take in
You missed the point of the movie. Look closer and you’ll notice that in Scarlett’s efforts to survive in her cruel circumstances, she becomes a worse and worse person at every turn. She starts out as a petulant, spoiled child, not unusual for girls her age, but with every strife she experiences she chooses to become more self-centered and evil. We watch her over and over again at the very cusp of becoming a better person, but instead she chooses to be worse. Margaret Mitchell wrote a novel that had a real inner truth about how one survives change, tragedy, and disappointment. Scarlett was no Saint; but her faith in: her home land, her courage, her own adaptability, the Future.. is inspiring. I've read the novel several times, love the movie. I know it is now questioned as being too glorifying of the South/slavery/an imaginary gentility; but it is oriented on how the South imagined itself, and on lots of very real desire to support familiar home/society/pride. I know slavery was wrong & damaging; but it was hardly original. It goes way back to Rome, Greece, the Mideast, the Orient, central and South America; so it was not only just a Black American problem. We need to do better; but I don't think that means we have to kill all the pride the South had in its effort to save its homeland, in the people who died to protect home. That's what Civil War is. Someone wins, and maybe the general understanding changes with time; but those who tried to be honorable in their own belief system, who suffered & died, also need a moment's credit; as does this novel.
"Cancelling" Gone With The Wind has nothing to do with slavery. It's just part of an ongoing effort to make history itself unfashionable so that the masses have no sense of culture whatsoever, and are that much easier to control and manipulate. Fortunately, human nature values culture very much. It is for this reason this effort to do away with culture will fail.

Until she was 10 years old, Margaret Mitchell thought that the South had won the war, as the adults around her not only hadn't told her differently, but spoke and acted as if they had. You should definitely read the book - there is so much more to the story - characters and incidents - and you really get a deeper sense of everyone, including Scarlett.
Gone With The Wind has so many super-fans that know so much more about it than I do. I'm humbled that many of them have enjoyed my video

@@BigShotCritic Clayton County is a suburb of Atlanta now and part of the big sprawl. But right in downtown Jonesboro there is a small but very nice GWTW museum (The Road to Tara Museum, located in the old train depot) where you can also take a bus tour, an antebellum plantation house (Stately Oaks), and a Confederate cemetery where soldiers who died in the Battle of Jonesboro were laid to rest.

I agree with others' comments here! Your review is spot on. Gwtw is my favorite movie of all time and so was the novel. I like how you said that there "might" be hope of Scarlett getting Rhett back. That's the beauty of the ending! Anyone could choose their own conclusion. Margaret Mitchell really made Scarlett and Rhett immortal because of how it ended!

The first real novel Ive ever read, when I was teenager I found a spanish translation and read all 800 something pages. Many things escaped me the first read, like the civil war and slavery but the story was just gripping.

I strongly disagree with the notion that Scarlett "lives in the past". I sort of get what you mean by it but Scarlett definitely does NOT live in the past, this is what Ashley does that's why he has such trouble adjusting after the war but Scarlet survives exactly because she does not look back. She says so herself when she says to Ashley "don't look back Ashley, don't look back, it drags your heart till you can't do anything but look back"
Yeah you're right I could've phrased that better. It's only in terms of hanging onto Ashley that she looks back or lives in the past. In all other ways you're right, she looks forward.

A funny glitch in this beloved movie is that there is an ELECTRICAL CORD attached to the lamp that Melanie carries into the bedroom when Ashley is wounded in the shoulder. Watch her left elbow! I first saw GWTW in Santa Barbara in 1967 when I was 13. I had no idea what I was going to see and, of course, as with most of us, the movie made an indelible impression. Scarlett was a teenager when her privileged world collapsed. Could ANY OF US have the "gumption" to survive the collapse of our small world as Scarlett did?

@@BigShotCritic It is, but I quite liked it myself when I read the sequel. I enjoyed Timothy Dalton as Rhett, and how he tried to do a passable Charlestonian accent, because Rhett was from Charleston in the book.

Our gorgeous Vivien Leigh should never be forgotten, the British should be proud of her, she was the best actress to come out of England.
I watched this immediately after having read the book, and I have to say I wasn’t the biggest fan. I felt like it took a lot of Scarlett’s accomplishments away from her and threw it at Ashley. Specifically in building her business, it splits it between the two of them when originally it was ALL Scarlett. The movie really gutted my favorite parts of her.

Fortunately I found the book. The First British edition 1937. I really enjoyed reading it, there are a lot most interesting details in the novel.

How exactly does Rhett give Scarlett a sense of security? He is a con man, who leaves Scarlett on multiple occasions in her most vulnerable moments. He has some serious sado-masochistic tendencies, loving her the most, when she s actively rejecting him and leaving her to her own devices when she is in dire need of him. This marriage was actually his idea and in every tragedy Scarlett had he was somehow involved (her second husband, their child etc.) If not the charismatic Clark Gable, this character would be considered the most cruel romantic lead in cinema history..
I have watched and loved Gone With the Wind a million times, each time gaining some insight. This review was above and beyond anything I gleaned, have read or heard discussed about this epic film. Thank you for your insight.

In the novel itself when Rhet leaves her she feels lost but raises herself with hope that she would go to Tara and think. And surely there is some way to bring him back.

You are right! I wanted to talk about it but by the time I rounded out the script as you see it, I just couldn't find the right moment to discuss the music. Perhaps the music warrants a video of its own!
Like "The Searchers" was a lot like "Gone with the Wind," every scene looked like a masterpiece painting. And the script was almost a film noir where Rhett Butler's life is ruined by being taken in by a selfish, manipulative woman.

Gone With the Wind is my favorite movie EVER!! I watch it so often that me and my 9 year old son can speak every single word line for line through the entire movie lol even he loves it. Mammy is our favorite character we love her 🙂 the movie Scarlett that came out in 1994 was a huge letdown, I was so excited for it to learn what happens but they couldnt possibly follow Gone With the Wind. I was super disappointed in it, I'm interested to know what you think of it!!

You might be interested to know that the characters have gone With the wind are based on the 12 zodiac signs. Scarlett is an Aries. Gone with the wind is always been my favorite movie and I somewhat view it as a comedy. Although I know it's about survival. I too, am an Aries. I too have lived in the past and I have had to face this part of me that is so stubborn. I appreciate your critiquing of this movie and you are spot on sir!
I don't know much about astrology, but I don't disregard it either. I know I am an Aries as well, and all the cliff notes descriptions of us TOTALLY apply to me. I can relate HARD. lol
I don't think there is anything wrong with Scarlett. I think she was a head of her time.
Her stubbornness and tenacity was a strength as well as a weakness. She didn't lose Tara, but she did a few dishonorable things to keep it.
And there's plenty wrong with marrying her first husband just so Ashley would be jealous.
