      What if you stir lightly when it starts to gel?

      Cast something thicker than water like syrup or honey

    • @Punchudo

      You should try dry ice, it is a gas in room temperature (i think) . You can make like a misty crystal ball? 🔮

    • @Punchudo
      @Punchudo 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      And try heavy water :)
      Maybe even try the blackest black powder / the pinkest pink casting in resin

    You could try waiting for the epoxy to begin to cure and inject the water in the center with an eye dropper or syringe and see if the bubble of water will stay put.

    • @SilverScaleMA
      @SilverScaleMA 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Yeah, kind of the same theory as for the ice cube. Have it set just enough so it doesn't immediately escape to the surface.

    If you want the water to stay put, it needs to have the same weight/volume ratio as the epoxy. You can take a cup of epoxy and weigh it and a cup of water and weigh it. Water will be lighter, but you can keep dissolving salt into it and make it heavier until it matches the weight of the resin. Then when you pour it, it should stay put in that cool Lava lamp pattern.

      If only he actually did this instead of just randomly guessing at the needed salt when he did this test it might have actually worked.

    Let the resin set a bit before you put the water in, and put the water into a syringe and disperse it through the water like that... i think it would look awesome if the idea works!

    Suggestion for next experiment: How about using Jell-O? My thought would be it would melt from the heat as the epoxy cures but then solidify as it cools again. Could make for some interesting shapes.

    You should get a syringe with colored water in it and, like the ice cube, wait for the top layer to start to solidify before injecting. You could keep the syringe tip submerged in the resin, ready to inject the water. And you could pour up a little more resin off to the side that shouldn't start setting up at the same time as the one being injected, that way if you pull the needle out and the resin sticks to it and leaves a hole, you could just pour more resin over it to sort of seal the hole off.
    This makes more sense in my head, please respond to this if you don't understand so I can explain it better.

    As a follow up, I'd like to see you mix it fully like in the first but this time see how much there is in the small cup with ridges, before you add the water, to know if all the water is driven off as steam, or if some of it is stored inside the milky set resin, as at end will be able to see if blank is same size as control where you didn't add any (or you could just use a line on the cup and not waste the resin making a control). Interesting to see what you made, just occurred that it may be interesting extension.

    If resin and water don't really mix, what would happen to the first attempt where you stirred the water into the resin if you put it in the freezer? Would the microscopic water droplets that must be caught in the resin expand and break apart the resin, or would the resin be able to stretch? Would the chunk of the mixture expand in size? Would it be able to float?

    Interesting...this reminds me of this little experiment with corn syrup and injected dye along separate parts where if you had a spindle and spun it a few times, then reversed the rotation all the colors, having flowed along with the spinning, would return back to it's position from before it was originally spun..perhaps that could work with casting?

    Would be interesting to see you try something similar to this. Firstly, maybe waiting for it to partially cure like you did with the ice cube, then using a needle to inject a bubble or bubbles of water into place in the curing resin. Also, I'd be interested to see how using a different liquid, for example; mineral oil, mineral spirits, vegetable oil, vinegar, and ethyl or isopropyl alcohol. Maybe there is some liquid that has the same density too, so neither the resin nor liquid would rise to the top? Maybe something like honey?

  • @Rockhopper1
    @Rockhopper1 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    if you make a mould of something like a little figure and freeze it with coloured water and place it frozen in the resin and let it cure you should get a negative space of the figure once it cures. For more fun, you can freeze little water balls and drop it into the resin and if you stack them let it cure, then you get it and cut them into cubes the water will drain out and put these into another coloured resin for some abstract shapes, once cured and put on a lathe it would look cool.

  • @christmassnow3465
    @christmassnow3465 ปีที่แล้ว

    I expected the water to evaporate and form lots of bubbles when mixed. Possibly that is why the vacuum chamber did not clear all the water vapor and the mix remained murky.
    You should weigh the cup before and after you cure it in the vacuum chamber and see how much water evaporated.

    Maybe freeze the the water/epoxy mix, since there are (probably) bubbles of water here and there, it could give interesting to see if it makes little cracks by expanding

    Have you heard of edible water bottles? They're encapsulated blobs of water made from a seaweed-based substance (saw them in a TH-cam video). I wonder if that would work in resin?

    Cool experiment. But I’m still curious to see if you can inject water in to resin that has starter to thicken up

    That was amazing to see. I'm surprised the water didn't evaporate when you didn't mix it into the resin

    You should try freezing a layer of the coloured water at the bottom of the cup then pouring resin on top - possibly even resin that’s already starting to thicken? That way you might get more of that lava lamp effect

    Maybe adding something to the water to make it have a similar viscosity as the resin?

    My physics/chemistry knowledge isn't the greatest, but maybe try salt water next time? Its denser than water so it might sink a little better in the resin. I'm sure there are some flaws in the reasoning, but thats why we expeiment.

    Try to first cast the resin sides, then do a second pour into the resin cup, but when it is thick, turn it upside down so the resin tries to go to the bottom
