    I was drinking a lot of water at night. Couldn't stop waking up after 4 hours and couldn't figure out why. Stop drinking fluids all together before bed. Not just caffeine. Water gives you energy.

      Cutting off fluids at suppertime is what my family would do and she t keeps you from getting up so much at night. It stop accidents in children.

      I tend to do that too! Hadn't thought about it. I will set a very small glass by the bed tonight, not a huge tumbler.

    I gave up caffeine 9 days ago. I could always sleep if I drank it before I went to bed, but since cutting it out I feel completely knocked out come bedtime. I gave it up because I have a fibroid and because I've realised from research how caffeine can damage your liver and kidneys and obviously other parts of your body. I was brought up on cups of tea and used to binge chocolate, and started drinking coffee more heavily than ever, in the latter part of the pandemic. From cutting it out completely, I have realised how it was badly affecting my stress levels and coping mechanisms. I don't want to touch the stuff again. My anxiety has nearly gone. I used to be prone to panic attacks and I would think of past trauma memories every day that I couldn't get past despite trying loads of CBT methods, mindfulness etc. One aspect of giving up caffeine by day 3, was that I haven't woken up instantaneously thinking of trauma memories. My moods have lifted and I can cope with things that would immediately create massive anxiety in me, and it is much easier to be in control of what I think about.

      Caffeine doesn't cause/worsen fibroids, and I'm not aware of any meaningful research showing that it is harmful for kidneys or liver.

      @@KenDBerryMD That's good to know. There is a lot of information out there, so it is difficult to know which to believe, especially when it is coming from Doctors. With caffeine, I meant larger amounts than a cup of coffee a day. It's highly addictive for many people, but if higher amounts don't cause damage either, then good news for all the coffee drinkers out there.

    I use a method called the "doubling game" in order to drop off to sleep, whether at bedtime or after bathroom breaks. You think like this: 1,2,2,4,3,6,4,8,5,10 and if you start thinking about something else, bring yourself back to 1 and start over. The highest I've ever gotten was to 30-something. And now my brain is trained so I only have to get to around 7-10.

      Anxiety? I believe that’s the most common cause of not being able to stay asleep.

    I ONLY drink caffeine in the morning when I wake up. Yet it takes me forever to fall asleep at night. I dread night time because I can never sleep. I’ve been doing keto and IF and the idea of bed time scares me

      I can relate. It’s always been like a sleep anxiety. I’d much rather take a nap during the day than fight the long night time hours of staring at the ceiling. It’s such a strange biorhythm flip.

      Check out some Rife frequencies, also called solfeggio frequencies. I use them for meditation and find them super relaxing, which surprised me because I assumed that listening to one long tone would be annoying. Be sure to find the pure tones without music, although some people like those too! There are hundreds on TH-cam. Good luck.

      I think you should try doing one meal for bf or lunch and enjoy some zero sugar cocktails in the evening. I've been doing it for one yr straight and everyone think it's a joke when I tell them because I lost 60lbs and went from fat to "bro you actually lift" with abs 🤷‍♂️
      EDIT: I drink almost half a bottle of vodka a day and every single person goes wacko when I say that despite they clearly see me drink every night

    I had fatty liver and always felt tired even after 8 hrs sleep. My doc clued me into this half life issue and after I weaned myself off, within three days I woke up feeling refreshed. Alas, now if I indulge in keto-friendly dark chocolate after dinner … I can’t sleep. Great advice doc.

      @D B That depends on the square size. You assume everyone eats the same chocolate? The 2.8oz (80g) 88% dark chocolate bar that I like is 24 squares, so 1/4 bar is 6 squares.

      @TheDriftwoodLover Thanks for sharing about the caffeine in chocolate! Eating carbs and caffeine interferes with absorption of vitamin B-1 aka thiamine, which is needed for metabolizing food and therefore energy production.
      Thanks for the reminder. I'm trying to quit dark chocolate, my last vice in my ketovore journey. I'm so addicted to it, but I know it's not helping me, other than providing some copper.

      @@dianavp9054 Life has to have some pleasure! Try the keto-friendly chocolate. I like ChocZero but there are others people give good marks to. The one I like is sweetened with monkfruit. If you’ve been off sugar awhile, the keto chocolates will be easier to like. When you’re still consuming a lot of sugar, fuggedaboutit. Maybe Dr. Berry will give us his evaluation of them.

    I have suffered with insomnia for years going on ten years.Believe it or not my husband bought me a little stuffed animal it’s a big foot we found Tiny he is very tiny for a big foot I’ve been sleeping with that ever since he bought it for me I just hold it in my arms and I go to sleep and I stayed asleep for five or six hours I don’t believe it either I have no idea why it works but it does and I am so grateful so thank you too Tiny. God bless I hope this helps someone it might be a mother thing I’m thinking. By the way I’m 75 years old.

    I have been Carnivore for 16 months. The only issue i still have is not getting to sleep but staying asleep. I can fall asleep really easy but cannot seem to stay asleep. I get between 3 and 6 hrs a night of broken sleep. I now fall asleep in front of the tv shortly after supper. I am sleep deprived. I don't drink caffeine.

      When I go low carb, keto, carnivore, whichever, I can fall asleep but keep waking up through the night. I can take melatonin, eat more protein or a few more carbs before bed, but nothing helps. My issue is not caffeine.

      I wish someone would address what could be happening, and the things that you could try to fix it with. There are several videos some have, like this, but for me it's not caffeine, melatonin doesn't work, electrolytes dont work, small amount of protein before bed and a small shot of carbs doesn't work either.

      I take l theanine , magnesium glycinate and melatonin before bed. And if I still can’t calm down my speeding brain…I eat a very small piece of a special’ sleep gummy…. and can’t wait to get in bed.

    No caffeine for me past noon or I'm tossing and turning with my jaw clenched wondering why I can't sleep. Holy cow, my folks used to brew a pot a 10 pm so they could have coffee for the news and Carson. Crazy.

    I’ve had to give up my beloved Bulletproof coffee in the morning because after many years it started to hurt my stomach. I switched to English breakfast tea and not only did my stomach pain stop, I’ve been sleeping much better and staying asleep.

      Did you try a decaf version of coffee? Buy the whole bean as freshly packaged as you can get and only grind what you'll use. Store the beans in the fridge to keep the oil fresh. The healing benefits are in the coffee bean "oil",
      so don't use any paper filter coffee makers, as
      the paper filters trap the oils from going into
      your cup. Look up videos on Stove Top Coffee
      or use a French Press or a Stove top Expresso coffee maker.
      This makes a huge difference, even for our bladder.

    When I’m out in the woods with no light pollution, I have no insomnia issues even with caffeine into mid-day. When I’m in LA with so much public lighting, it never truly looks like nightfall, I have sleep issues every time.

      Blue blocker glasses that wrap all the way around your eyes are huge. I keep them on my nightstand on top of my phone. If I have to go to the bathroom it's way less traumatic. Also consider getting smart LED's that turn red at say 9pm in the house. Pretty cheap actually.

    God bless you Dr. Berry! I tried giving up coffee cold turkey last week and I still couldn’t get to sleep. I love coffee so much that I didn’t see a point of giving it up completely. I just drink 2-3 cups in the morning. Before i drank a pot and a half and stopped by 2pm. Good to know I can still drink coffee but just a lot less and finish much sooner in the morning.

    I had insomnia for years...until i started using banana peel tea. It makes me sleep very well.
    Boil banana peel and some cinnamon...or without cinnamon
    You can even use frozen banana peels...it works for me.

    Caffeine makes zero difference. I don't sleep with or without it. Have gone many months without any caffeine. Still not sleeping. So I would rather have it in the morning after being awake for 48-72 hours straight, than being without. I need some sort of intervention! I can't take the insomnia anymore!!

    That explains part of it for me. I am definitely one of those 3 day insomniacs. One or two cups at 6 am puts me in days to a week of WIDE-AWAKE. And keto strict eating makes it difficult to sleep, too.

    Thank you Dr Barry! This is excellent information. It totally applies to myself, I do not drink it last noon, been doing that for many years😀. Had my hubby watch this (be is a fan of yours), since he drinks caffeinated coffee and diet sodas a lot everyday. His sleep is greatly affected! I hope he will listen to your advice!

    That's great, but what about the rest of us with a true induction insomnia and just don't sleep? I have never drank coffee in my life, nor all the other things that interfere. I have done all the routine rituals that are the modern day mantra that amount to nothing. I have had several sleep studies and was actually kicked out the first time because I didn't sleep. The next time I was drugged to the gills and didn't sleep. No explanation. It is a type of living hell.

      Have you had your cortisol levels checked? I know this is a year later, but I’m late to the show. And it’s 12:30am lol. Mine spike at this time, as you can tell. 😩 I usually take adrenals and vitamin b12 at night, it helps a lot. Just out at the moment.

    I’ve been carnivore for six weeks and over the last several weeks have tapered off trazodone (been on for 10 yrs!) completely. I’m having extreme insomnia and only average a few hours a night off and on. I’m a morning coffee drinker (1cup) but after listening to this I’m going to try and cut this out and see if sleep improves. Thank you for this. Hopefully it helps!

    Sleep is underrated. I prioritize my sleep for my mental health. With sleep and a carnivore diet I’ve learned to control my BPD.

    I've watched your videos for a few years now. You talk about many different conditions and diseases but I haven't seen anything on trigeminal neuralgia. Thanks to you, I've been doing keto for a few months and have lost 30 lbs but when I saw your video on the carnivore diet, I thought I would try it. I've been on it about a week and have lost an additional 3 lbs. However, my trigeminal neuralgia seems to be getting worse. I'm sure the diet has nothing to do with it but I thought I'd ask.

    So, like a lot of people here, caffeine does not always give you a buzz, I get sleepy after coffee. Can you explain why that might be? Great videos by the way.

      It's like ADHD. The medicine they give is a stimulant. They even sometimes use coffee for children instead of drugs.

      You have over fatigued your body, you need to stop taking coffee, drink more water and detox yourself. About a month later if you still want to still drink coffee, take it at noon, and see the difference. Limit yourself to one cup a day, or just realise the benefits without it.

    Love your videos, thank you for all the info. Since I have to take Anastrozole and Levoxyl I have trouble sleeping. Still awake at 4 am and often at 5 am and I am awake again at 8 am or 9 am but of course I am feeling tired all the time.

    I've been living low carb and have recently begun doing more carnivore and intermittent fasting. I've suffered from insomnia since I hit menopause 8-9 years ago. In an effort to help me get better sleep easier, I had to give up my beloved coffee, which I used to enjoy all day long. Especially enjoyed my iced coffee and iced tea in the afternoon, but had to give them up. I'm now limiting myself to one cup of coffee, which I have to have, but must finish it before 9am to have any hope of being able to fall asleep at bedtime, which is about 9pm each night.
    It's hell growing old, but it beats the alternative.

      Sadly, my mother used to say that all the time, and then she got Alzheimer’s at 73. She had it for 12 years before she died. I think if she could’ve chosen, she would’ve rather been dead.😞

    Your videos are great, have given me a lot of useful information. That being said, you can take my carbs, you can take my plant based foods, you can even take my sugar, but I will fight anyone that tries to take my coffee! Clearly I don't have a problem at all. I've had insomnia since I was 8 years old, it's fine, we're friends now.

    Dr. Berry, please talk about not being able to sleep through the night. I fall asleep just fine, but wake up way too early. Nothing I’ve tried helps. I’m desperate, not able to function. What could be the reason? Cortisol levels out of balance? Female hormones?

      It's a common problem and likely more than one answer like stress, anxiety, bladder problems and yes even hormones. I never was able to sleep for long after having my daughter - even years after she was sleeping through the night. Add to that night duty shifts and my sleep cycle's on another level!.

I've always been hyper sensitive to any stimulant, coffee, sugar, chocolate, after 11 a.m., as it would affect my sleep. I always thought it was because I had healthy, functioning adrenal glands, (as opposed to those midnight coffee drinker who could sleep). All those stimulants were created to do just that. This is why I think my body is just reacting the way a healthy body ought to. What do you think about my uneducated guess? Thank you, again. I'm doing the keto diet as you've inspired, to loose the "unwanted lbs". I was an exercise instructor for years, yet at almost 70, I'm a bit chubby, and still exercise daily!     I'm 35 years old male I've been suffering from insomnia for a very long time it has affected me adversely,even if I get into deep sleep get up due to some reason I can't get back into deep sleep again that annoys me. I got covid 19 last month i had severe panic as well as anxiety attack for two days that almost killed me had to call emergency care I feel that my insomnia worsened even more after I got diagnosed with covid 19 which lead to those attacks

    I thought this video was about the so many people experiencing insomnia on keto/carnivore. This is a topic that seems to be overlooked and disguised as "you need less sleep on keto". And I have heard of many people after 2, 3 or more years on carnivore that simply cannot sleep despite adding fat, lowering fat, adding electrolytes etc etc , and in the end they need to add carbs, which actually works for that. This really makes me cuestion if this is the proper human diet or the obligated diet only for those that destroyed their glucose system due to eating pure crap and an excesive...read again, excesive.... amount of carbs...

    This is gold class information. So with my previously bad non alcoholic fatty liver, this explains 100% why I could never sleep with the slightest bit of caffeine in my system, no matter how early I had my coffee or tea.
    When I intermittent fast, and go off caffeine, is the only time my liver had time to free my system of it.
    An when I give up caffeine for at least three consecutive days, I get amazing restorative sleep.
    Only then do my cortisol levels drop enough for me to loose body fat.

    Oh, this was a must-see video for me! I wasn't aware that any kind of liver damage (which includes fatty liver, yes?) would extend the half life of the caffeine I was having.
    I've been training myself to only have decaf coffee and tea after midday - I have THAT mostly sorted - and then I forget and will have chocolate or even a diet cola later in the day!
    When you stop and think about it, there is caffeine in SO MANY things we eat and drink, without realising it.

    I drink decaf all day long. I sleep just fine. Plus I’m on a high protein low carb diet. It’s all good!

      I have regular coffee around 11-11:30 in the morning, if I fancy a coffee later than that I have a good quality decaf and it tastes delicious but doesn’t stop me going to sleep 👍🏼

    I'm a rare case. Caffeine has no effect on me. I can drink a pot of coffee just before bed and sleep like a baby. My dad and brother are the same. No effect. I think my metabolism for caffeine is minutes. I've never got a "buzz" from caffeine.

    Thank you Dr. Ken. I (66) feel for those who have sleep problems. Fortunately though, I’m not one of them. I drink two 12ounce cups of coffee in the morning and 1 - 2 hours before bedtime it’s Bourbon Pecan coffee.

    My caffeine tolerance has changed as I age. In my youth, I could down a high caffeine drink right before bed -- I haven't done that in decades now. While I don't feel it is a huge impact, I stop drinking coffee by 10am and only drink it on the weekends when it is below freezing. :)_

      Agreed. I find that l-theanine helps me sleep better. I’ve read that some people are taking l-theanine with their caffeine containing beverages to try to cancel the wired feeling. I just limit caffeine to early morning and two cups. L-Theanine a couple hours before bedtime and I am out like a light.

      @@nanaobx An animo acid that is found in green tea. The supplement form is an isolated form of l-theanine. It is claimed to help ease the anxiety (or as Floating Moon put it "wired feeling") that caffeine gives you. I chuck some in my coffee.

      @@floatingmoon5778 Agree. When I’ve had sleep problems fr a few days, I’ll take a CBD gummy that contains L-theanine. I think that works better than the CBD because I’d taken CBD drops alone prior and got no benefit.

    No wonder I sleep better, now that low carb has curbed my fatty liver and my enzymes are back to normal. I have morning caffeine, around 9 am, then stop completely until next day, and actually never would have imagined that could be a factor in my miserable sleep patterns before low carb, with NAFLD!     I had to just give it up entirely. I've never been a drinker of ETOH, just hating the taste and the horrid effects (makes me feel as if my blood is suddenly full of carbonation---just a hideous feeling!), but I do have NAFLD from ignorantly consuming a totally wrong diet for most of my 68 years.
    Started keto almost a year ago, but my body cannot process vegetables, so switched to carnivore just this week. What a difference! While I still don't sleep well yet (can't correct in 68 hours what I did to myself for 68 years), at least I'm not sitting here wide awake at 4 a.m., hoping nobody calls me at 8 a.m. when I'll just be falling asleep.
    That is, between giving up the caffeine and switching to carnivore, my body is finally able to relax a lot more, but I'm sure it'll take a few more days to overcome the caffeine half life, considering my last cup of coffee was Tuesday afternoon.

    I had to quit drinking coffee. I noticed that it made me anxious throughout the day and it often led to a rough night. Since quitting, my day time anxiety and sleep anxiety has gone almost entirely away. I feel like I'm completely dragging myself along some mornings but I know that my day will be worse if I give in and drink coffee.

    I LOVE MY MORNING COFFEE ! I only drink it in the morning so it doesn’t usually affect my sleep ! Thank goodness! I do know people that are very sensitive to caffeine and can’t even drink it at all Because it makes them too jittery.

    This is a issue in Ketho diet... all people complaining about sleep problems. Carnivore diet looks like shows same issues

    I'm 62 and have regular coffee throughout the day right up to bedtime and fall right to sleep and stay asleep (soundly for as long as 8-10 hours). I love coffee so I'm glad it doesn't give me any problems with sleep.

    I thought I couldn’t give up my coffee addiction until my G.P registered my blood pressure at 197/94. From that moment I have been drinking black tea with surprisingly no withdrawal symptoms. Result? My B/P went down to 125/75 again within the week.

      Yes, me too. I can't sleep unless I drink coffee. That seems like addiction and withdrawal symptoms fixed by the hit before bed. 😕

      Been lable in the past the add... Am the same coffee tea or hot coco relaxes me and makes me want to go to sleep. 5 to 6 hour later mite get a energy buz from it.

    Had caffeine daily for 25 years. 2 cups a day maximum in the end only 1 cup in the morning always slept fine.
    Quit cold Turkey 2 month ago and haven’t been able to seep since! Hate it will most likely go back on the poison soon. I can’t take it!

    I quit all caffeine about 3 months ago and wake up feeling great pretty much every morning, even if I don't get the best sleep that night. Usually though I sleep a good 8 hours a night without a problem.

    I only have one cup coffee in morning( no caffeine rest of day) no problem going to sleep….I wake up after 4-5 hours….have a hard time going back to sleep, if I do at all….been going on for decades…..I’ve tried all the remedies ie melatonin, etc

    I cut out almost all caffeine due to heart and vascular issues. My insomnia is still out of control. On really bad days when my kids don’t sleep or I have something I have to do and can’t wake up enough I will drink a cup of green tea. Like a tea cup worth of tea. 6-8 ounces. It’s some messed up gene and I freaking passed it on to my kids. 330 AM here and the two year old is wide awake.

    When I did keto, it took just 4 days for me to sleep better than I've ever slept. I never realized sugar and carbs were the culprit
