The things I notice most after quitting a year ago 1. No more acid reflux 2. No more waking up at night for the toilet I still love the taste, so will have an organic decaf now and again. There's a lot of false hype around caffeinated coffee ... either by those selling it or addicted to it.
Yeah the 7 billion coffee drinkers the world over all fell for the ‘false hype.’ And you’re out of the Matrix. You’re the greatest. You make Keanue Reeves look like Corey Feldman.
The thing about coffee is that it makes me more impulsive and frustrated throughout the day. I can feel my cortisol levels are higher. Also I only get 2-3 hours of productivity when drinking coffee VS 6-7 hrs of highly productive work when I quit. But the worst is the fact that it makes me more impulsive to carnal desires later on in the day like gluttony, lust, sloth etc...
I've quit refined sugar and wheat flour for the past 11 days and coffee for 5 days. WOW. Sleep coming back and this morning I felt so calm and spiritually centered. I didn't understand why then I was like, "Ohhh, wooow!" I am blown away how much those three things were affecting my brain, mood and sleep. I'm never going back.
This is perhaps one of the best and honestly most practical videos for Why not to drink caffeine. Everything this gentleman said about caffeine affecting deep sleep and how long caffeine stays in the body was really insightful. I am going to go caffeine free for awhile and see if my sleep Improves.
@@RG-of1fd I cut down to 1 cup. Try to be finished drinking by 8am. I noticed I’m getting deeper sleeps, more dreams. And probably an extra half hour per night.
About 2 months ago I got some flavored coffee from a discount store. #! mistake. A month later I thought I had a serious mental decline. And I would fall a lot. Researched to find that coffee beans are the most crop with the highest pesticides which means that my cheap coffee probably had more. I feel AMAZING now...like I did before I started drinking 2 cups every morning for 30 years. I've been poisoning myself and the cheap coffee just thru me over the edge.
Matthew made a critical point at 12:11, "Sleep will trump caffeine five ways till Tuesday" when it comes to improving both general health and physical performance.
Very insightful, thanks a lot. It seems it is much better to improve one's diet & include more anti-oxidants in it than rely on caffeine to supply them. I'm grateful I've never got addicted to it and live peacefully over 34 years without it. Best wishes to anyone transitioning to caffeine-free life: it's possible and very livable 😊
Excellent explanations on the subject of caffeine and poor sleep and I have watched many videos by Matthew Walker, but it always revolves around coffee consumption. I am going through withdrawal after many years of drinking black tea... up to 8 mugs a day! Some advice regarding caffeine in tea would be helpful as it seems that there is a difference between tea and coffee release into the system. I'm doing well after cold turkey and won't be returning once out the other side. Sleep still awful but the 'fight or flight' hyper thinking seems to be easing.
When i drink coffee i dont perform better in the gym. I feel it makes my heart weeker. When i run uphill i tire out much quicker and recovery takes longer. To me ne negative Impact is bigger than alcohol. And for some reason coffee makes me eat more junk food.
It's been shown there are benefits when both are consumed together. Luckily this combination is in a lot of teas, with matcha being one of the best. 🍵😋
Great Video!! What brand of decaffeinated coffee would you recommend, since a lot of decaffeinated coffee brands are using harmful chemicals to get rid of the caffeine.
Even with only 1 strong coffee very early in the morning my sleep was fucked up. only 35-40min deep sleep and a lot of waking up. Much better now that I quit.
Not needing anything of the "good things" of coffee. I don't care about antioxidants in that little coffee, I care about my live quality. Not sure how to continue, but maybe with decaf.
If it has caffeine, yes. As a general rule of thumb, black tea has half of the caffeine per serving when compared to a typical cup of coffee; green tea has about a third; and white tea can range from having less than green tea to having the same, possibly more, than green tea. It depends on a lot of factors.
I think the quality of coffee matters too. Average folks are drinking low quality coffee. Most Americans or folks around the world drink coffee brands like Maxwell House, Folgers, and Nescafe. Basically brands that use low quality coffee beans that are sprayed with pesticides that usually don't always taste good, and are cheap to buy at the grocery store. They are not drinking the best quality coffee for taste, antioxidants, and health benefits. Then people wonder why they feel crappy when drinking coffee. I think the Bulletproof coffee craze opened a lot of people's eyes about coffee, and that the quality of coffee actually matters to certain folks or makes a difference.
I'm thinking about quitting. It's funny, I bought a bottle of decaf a while ago and I think it's the grosses thing ever, while normal coffee is delicious. The funny part is both do taste the same.
Have you ever tried making your own coffee from decaf beans? They've come a long way in recent years.. it tastes damn near identical to my taste buds. Also if you don't want to quit completely, you could always do half/half of regular beans and decaf beans to make 'half-caf' coffee. That helped me when I was cutting back on my caffeine intake.
No ammount of anti oxidants make up for insomnia, shitty sleep, and chronic fatigue throughout the day. That has to be the dumbest argument for drinking coffee I've ever heard.
I drink 1L a day before 10am of coffee. I went 30 days without it and noticed nothing. Everyone is different with it but i like not having it when I really want it just to show who's boss
If a quarter of the caffeine is still in the system 12 hours after having it , what point do we need to finish caffeine for enough to be out out of your system to not alter sleep quality ? Does the type of caffeine matter such as Green tea versus coffee ?
if half life is 5/6 hours, then if you take it 15 to 18 hours before sleep.... you will have only 1/8 of caffeine (12%) which means if you go to bed at 10pm, take your coffee at 7 am..... very impractical. And yes, green tea has only 30% of caffeine compared to same volume of coffee. My solution is to have coffee only every other day. And in between, tea, lemongrass ginger..... Other solution/variation is to take only 1 cup....
An eighth still in system seems like a very significant amount doesn’t it ? I want to know how long it takes until it is 100 percent out of the system . Also gyokuru green tea from Japan ,which tastes great , has more caffeine than most coffees and I am told so does matcha . I know coffee caffeine content varies quite a bit based on region and the roast . The tea has theanine in it which is calming so it may negate some of the stimulant effect so that’s why I am curious if it matters tea or coffee.
@@andrewbatkin8211 The half life/quarter life is misleading. It seems like there's an exponential decrease in the metabolization of caffeine, like the other guy replied, but there's not, your body will continue metabolizing it and no caffeine will be in your system before too long. It all depends on you tolerance, genes, etc., but if you don't drink that much caffeine none will be in your system beyond 12 hours.

Same. I take caffine pills instead usually, maybe energy drink shots, 700 to 900 mgs a day, often right up till an hour before bed. Im sure its not healthy, but its also not hurting my sleep. The food I eat and when I eat it has a far larger impact on my sleep. Only work 70hr weeks tho.
If you want to go to sleep by midnight and have good deep non-REM sleep, then none after 3pm. But I cheat a little and have my last one right before 6pm.

Any antioxidants in coffee can easily be found elsewhere, without the sleep destroying effects of caffeine. Walker's take on coffee of late borders on the incoherent, and I have to assume he's gone in this direction to avoid triggering coffee addicts. Bad take overall
Since quitting caffeine my insomnia has completely gone and i've got more energy in the morning.

All in moderation. Don’t worry too much about it. The over worrying about this kind of thing is far worse than that extra cup of coffee.

I heard that the process to decaf coffee is quite toxic.
