In South Africa, these come with the spare wheel mounted on the rear door. This give room for a standard fitted second fuel tank giving 150 liters. Much better.

Also, gas stations are much more available now so bigger gas tank is not required. Unless your going into deep bush, where you can option for a rear wheel on the rear instead of a flat tail gate, in Australia.

If you want a premium truly off road vehicle, YES, you do pick the Toyota Land Cruiser btw, in Australia the Prado Isn't the top of the range, that would be the Sahara. You buy the Toyota LC as a premium off-Roader because unlike something like the Merc or Land Rover alternatives, this Toyota is incredibly reliable which is what you need in the outback. Toyota sells different versions of this vehicle to different markets, i'm not sure how truly off-road suitable the European version is, it looks pretty capable but in the US, they more have a vehicle that's setup for more style of substance as they rarely have true off road use where as the model designed for the Australian, African and Middle East is designed as a true off-Roader with all the capability and reliability that the Land Cruiser 200 series is designed for.

Funny thing is, this is nothing compared to outback driving in rural Australia, the Toyota Land Cruiser of choice and it truly IS designed for far worse situations than this, we might not have snow but we do have sand, incredible dust and heat, stoney, muddy rivers to pass through and such. In Australia Toyota has several models of LC including the Prado which isn't our top of the line, that would be the Sahara and they also offer the option of including truly off road reliable parts such as huge bull bars fitted by the dealer, as its quite common to hit huge kangaroos, eagles, deer and even cows and the like, Snorkel exhaust kits are pretty common due to needing to travel through deep river crossings, Fridge for food storage, fitted in the boot and of course roof racks for all the additional gear you will want such as multiple spare tyres, fuel and sleds to get you out of being bogged. Here is the Sahara, th-cam.com/video/cUE7F-oVbsY/w-d-xo.html its a 4.5 -litre V8 turbo-diesel :D btw, Toyota isn't the best on infotainment technology that's for sure but they do make by far the most reliable vehicles and its reliability that you really want in the outback of Australia. For the money, you really get ripped off in Europe, our top of the range Sahara costs about $120,000 AUD The 200 series is very much due for an update, the Prado however has been recently updated tech wise so would probably be a better buy until the full LC update is released.

He makes a good point at the beginning about the gulf in class between the trim levels. A base Toyota is generally very austere and lacks many useful and desirable features whilst the top trims are almost Lexus-like in their materials.

this car needed the 3.5 V6 atkinson cycle from the american tacoma/4runner, combined with a hybrid assist (like the infinity direct response hybrid) - simple, efficient, effective.
so the guys who wanted to work, could have chosen the diesel for towing, and the guys who wanted something like a GX460 could have gotten the hybrid.

I am on my third Landcruiser in a row so now driving them since 2006. I drive the very basic three door commercial version. Basically a three door van. But its great for bringing the dogs, towing my classic cars on my transporter and its main job of assisting me in my Landscape gardening business. Of course the base models have only very basic 4WD traction control.

Let’s not get carried away champion and blow our own trumpets. We import the 200 like a bunch of other countries. We also buy more Prado’s for the rug rat run and the only people who really care about the Land Cruiser badge are 200 series owners. Let’s also remember that the LC has a lower load capacity than the Prado when you consider the GVM so space is not the only factor. We all know how that goes when we load the tug up with bar work, batteries and the obligatory fridge. Go easy buddy and stay safe. 👍🇦🇺

Jimmy Jimmy A Standard Prado can carry around 680kg which is around 100 -120kg more tgan a Standard 200. But it can only tow 3ton not 3,5ton legally. Anyone that tows in a 200 just gets the gvm or gvm/gcm upgrade., with my Sahara that takes the GVM to 3800kg up from 3350kg, it can tow 4 ton, 400kg ball weight and a GCM of 7800kg. More than you need to tow a 3.5 ton van and have a full car. Chalk and cheese between the 2. Also the standard springs are good enough if you are not towing over 3 ton, and cushier on the road.

If you are buying a Prado you are buying the ride comfort and capability and most wont care about a bit of sand or mud as the interior is rugged and will stand the test of time.. Ok, a few comments I would make are that you really didn't sound too much as though you knew what you were talking about with the Land Cruiser. I might add I own a three door Land Cruiser and it certainly is not a pumped up RAV 4. It can do everything a 5 door can. If space is an issue, or you just don't want 5 doors then the 3 door is a totally practical alternative. You might add what tyres you were using since every off roader knows that the secret to safe off road driving is good tyres. If you were using standard road tyres, or perhaps basic mud and snows, I'm impressed by the car. Finally I do so agree with you on the practical side of the Land Cruiser. Since Land Rover decided to stop Defender production, the Land Cruiser is about the only sensible alternative. Most other cars being too expensively finished. I tow on a daily basis a two horse horse trailer: all up weight around 2.75 tonnes with great ease. I return around 10.1 litres per 100 Km on mixed cycle between towing and normal driving.A final point is reliability. The Land Cruiser compared to my old Land Rover is only at the garage for regular servicing. Nothing has gone wrong in the first 60,000 Km whereas the Land Rover had regular silly little faults. If you want a car that starts, goes and seldom will let you down, is practical and comfortable, the Land Cruiser is the car for you: 3 door or 5.

This is sold as Land Cruiser in Europe btw and as Land Cruiser Prado in a lot of markets. The US gets the big Land Cruiser which is 11 cm longer than the 5-door Prado.
They really have stepped up the game in the interior, looks pretty fancy in the bright way with the wood! However I agree with Brian that the entry level version is a more suitable and better price/performance choice for this car.

Both SUVs are 7 seater, the problem is the Landcruiser 150 (the one in the video and also known as Prado) the 2nd row is not as comfortable as the Landcruiser 200 series, the 2nd row middle seat really shreads your ass for long trips. To compensate this we bought a seat sponge but still not comfortable as the seats on the 200 series. 3rd row in the 150 series its good enough for kids and not so tall adults.
Also when using 3rd row you wont get that much of trunk space, so a roof rack is a must for luggage.
This is my opinion as a 150 series user that do some long family trips, about 6 to 12 hours. Also we are a family of 5 but sometimes we are 6 so luggage wont fit at the back when going all 6 people.
On the other side, Landcruiser 200 series its kind of too big for everyday usage, specially if in your country its not commong that vehicles that size and the price of the 200 series , you can buy the lowest trim of the 150 series and a mid size truck for the price of the 200 series :(.

15:47 Lexus has been doing that since 2003, but since Toyota owns Lexus, they just transferred that tech from their GX to this. They're essentially the same car, but with different interior and engines.

Regarding the high gloss piano black elements, totally agree with you guys. I have no idea why almost all of the car manufacturers are using this trim for years. I have Skoda Superb III L&K and it has plenty of this shitty black finger prints covered plastics and I hate that. I think no one like it. This kind of trim should be deprecated as soon as possible or at least to be just an option for the piano black trim lovers (I believe 2-3 people on the planet)

excellent review brian. this is a hard core offroader, its alot of money though, $70k for something that will be scraping rocks and trees. if it were me, i would have something less expensive to destroy offroad, and a nicer car on road. so max ~$20k for a pajero / landcruiser, something serious with low k's and not too old, under 10 years old. fyi, i just found a 2011 pajero, with the 3.2L turbo diesel, 95k's, excellent condition for $17k. this is the full dakar type 4wd, its serious gear. that leaves heaps for a 'premium' car/suv for on road duties. i found an audi q5, 2016, with 33k's, 2.0L turbo diesel, for $51k, essentially as new condition. leaves $2k for a nice whiskey : )

This is actually the baby Landcrusier which is known in KSA and Gulf Counteies only as Toyota Prado, when we speak about the Legend of Landcrusier then we mean the bigger one with seats for 9 or 8 person that come as VXR or GXR models either 6 or 8 cylinder one of the most common most practical tough 4 x 4 worldwide , and also as a city car with all capabilities for all kinds of roads, here in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia one of the largest market for Landcrusier and other Toyota cars is the No 1 4x4 Car also in all other Gulf Counteies and in Yemen.

In July 2018 the Euro 6 ( ultra low sulfur Diesel ) standards go into effect in Europe & Australia. There is a current ultra low sulfur diesel capacity shortage in both low sulfur feed stock and refineries ( most refineries are set up to process heavy crude ) that currently set up to process sweet crude oil. My personal conclusion is the diesel vehicle market is going to suffer in the price of fuel and the manufactures willing to produce diesel vehicles if there is an Ultra low diesel fuel availability constraints.

The British and the Germans have a bias against the landcruiser, more so because the offroading and overlanding culture is not so popular there. So the requirements for a tough, reliable suv is not so prominent. So they opt for lesser reliable and more car based Suvs, like the x5, q7 and some landrover models.

You can tell this guys not used to off-roading :D In regards to comfort, perhaps consider this is a vehicle design that has come from being developed for the Australian outback, Africa and the Middle East and the like that often requires you to travel hundreds of kilometres between towns and fuel stops and 1,000's of km's between outback destinations not seeing any other travellers for multiple days on end, the comfort aspects are a huge bonus if you can afford them. Its not like travelling in the US where you have long distances but they have huge wide perfectly corrugated roads, its a vehicle designed to deal reliably with mud, ruts, rivers, sand and the extreme heat of these destinations, you see very few Land Rovers or Merc vehicles in Outback Australia, they just aren't reliable enough, its either Toyota Land Cruisers or Nissan Patrol's because of their true off road capabilities and decades old reliability.

I liked this review, spot on about not pretending to be something it shouldn't be, must be said the fancy crawl control is not even an option on the lower spec models in the UK which is annoying, the base model LR Disco gets the full off road credentials, I think Toyota missed a step there. Having said all that, for the amount of these they will sell in the UK it's a miracle they still even bother trying!

If you have the budget then land cruiser, if not Prado will also do for a 7 seater. The third row is suitable for adults as well.
