Capcom's Dragon Dogma 2 creators mentioned Leo of Red Earth being the reason behind introducing Lion-esque-feline Beastren race.

Ever since I saw the characters in Fighting Evolution, I’ve been so curious as to what this game was and why it fell into a deep obscurity. Thank you for shedding light on one of the most unique fighting games ever made! Great work!

Thank you! Fighting Evolution can be fun, it's just sad that it likely killed any of Capcom's interest in doing things with the characters. Hopefully you're able to check out Red Earth at some point.

Thank you so much for this video! We Red earth community on fightcade were playing this game competitively since 2019. And practically discovered pretty much everything, although we are even discovering stuff to this day! We even wrote the wiki for each character and how good they are! This game is a gem
We even have a tournament every 2 weeks. And currently we have a sundae league with 1000 euro pool.

I've only played through this via emulation, and I'm really looking forward to finally having this available in an official capacity. Playing it made me realize how much Pocket Fighter references it. Can't wait to properly explore this obscure gem, and I'm excited for others who'll get to experience this for their first time.

    - Hauzer and Lavia have pursuit attacks for when you're down
    - Stun works like old Alpha games. If you momentarily don't get hit your stun gets reset back to zero. I had the most success with Kenji for inflicting dizzy status.
    - Ravange's sand priestess grab can be shaken out of but it's really tough. Same goes for Blade's mirror trap attack. Jumping behind Ravange prompts a poison gas.
    - The mobi chan bonus game is cute and fun during the credits.

Cross-run leveling system a-la Hades, invading other people's runs... Y'know, weird as this game is I feel it would do kinda well in the current videogame climate. Finding different people invading you with different builds that you'd have to handle differently would be cool.

Hi! Main guy who wrote the Leo wiki and the discords resident Romhacker
Good vid showcasing the game. This game is often neglected due to its small roster, which funnily enough results in people not even picking 1 of the 4 available lol
Some fun facts about this game that people might find interesting
    - The Ice elemental super is seen as the best in the game, as its strong Vs a jumping opponent, can combo in to itself, and is pretty easy to combo in to for everyone. It also gives INSANE Experience and damage Vs a character weak to it like Hauser and Kenji
    - Scion can "curse" the players similar to Anakaris from the Darkstalkers series. Leo is a cub, Kenji is a beetle, Mai-Ling is a monkey and Tessa is a penguin
    - Leo can perform an infinite blockstring on Blade. If he jumps, and you hit him with Leo's St.5, you can jump forward in to A.4, land, ST.4 then ST.5 repeat. It doesn't chip so it's not mega useful but nice for positioning
    - Capcom loves layering sprites in this game. Leo's weapons, Kenji's scarf, Hydrons tentacles, etc. Ravange layers his front paws and his Lion head over the torso, layering spritrs on top of sprites!
    - Mashing buttons during Lighting super has more bolts appear, and for Ice Super to execute faster

My guess, especially since it was still labeled Warzard at that time, is that Nob did translations to contribute to the article. I can find shockingly little English coverage of Red Earth from the late '96/early '97 timeline. It's probably something that was floated over to GamePro from a Japanese AM show for arcade coverage, but that's just me guessing.

19:25, nice to see the dive attack from Darkstalkers make some good use for this game.

I vaguely remember that GamePro issue as a kid but then SF3 just took over. What was funny was that SF3 still had so much mystery surrounding it even so close to its feb 1997 release.
From what I've heard from different sources, Capcom either gave Red Earth a very limited release, OR released enough for a decent amount of places to have....and then recalled the machines. The machines being recalled was something I heard from someone living in Japan at the time.
Most of my experience playing it comes from emulation as well, since the emulation for CPS-3 was fully cracked around my 19th birthday. So I spent a lot of time playing it, and surprisingly it worked very well even on my potato of a PC at the time.

    • @gemubaka
      @gemubaka  2 ปีที่แล้ว

I always kind of figured any location that may have had it, just ditched it when Street Fighter III was available. It will probably just be some sort of internal secret as to what really happened with the distribution. Emulation is great is ensuring games do not get lost to time, but it's doubly great when the company supports their games as well!

I know it's not an arcade game, and the only version out there has NO matchmaking, but when it comes to fighting games that are basically a boss rush, I will eternally recommend Touhou 10.5, Scarlet Weather Rhapsody, and 12.3, Hisoutensoku.
Hisoutensoku has a much larger cast than SWR while playing basically the same, but only has 3 story routes, covering a few of the new characters, and SWR has a story mode for every character (just a few less characters total).
The story battles are awesome, round 1 is always a regular versus/arcade mode type battle, and each round after that has the player navigating through insane bullet patterns to defeat the enemy, using system mechanics that refer heavily back to the mainline Touhou series.

    • @gemubaka
