Cosplay is SO much fun but I honestly have a folder on my computer form the creepy comments I get on my videos. The 1# thing people"hate" on me for is playing the violin while dressed as Sailor Jupiter. Sure, Neptune plays violin, but if Imma spend time and money making a full cosplay, I'm going to be my favourite person haha

    • @-Reagan
      @-Reagan 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

(!!) Not to mention having put in the time and effort to actually learn the violin (!) - I play piano, my son plays violin - I have tried. Let's just say I know it's not easy. Tell them when they learn to play the violin AND can make their own cosplay good enough to 1) tell at first glance which character they are between characters who have very similar outfits and 2) evidently make someone jealous enough to nitpick - then and only then they can nitpick - and actually not even then; bc then it would be hypocritical. Also, it's rude and it's not their body.

I was surprised how much this can affect guys cosplayers as well. I'm a fat guy who has been cosplaying for 5 years now, and I still remember the first time I had a cosplay creep encounter with a girl who was playing a character that dated my character in the show. Bc of my weight, my cosplays aren't very revealing, so I was surprised when, after she asked for a pic, she grinded up on me w/o asking. Luckily, I was with a group that all immediately turned on her, but it was crazy that she even thought that was okay.

  • @yunekowolf

I've been cosplaying since I was 16, and I'm 21 now. Multiple experiences with gross people or photographers have really soured the experience for me. Recently my fun in cosplaying the more 'sensual' characters that I used to love has been ruined because of creeps. I do still love cosplaying and always will, but I retired the more revealing characters for a while and am focusing more on 'covered' characters until I'm comfortable again. It's really depressing how people can ruin someone's fun like that, but especially as a woman there's nothing much to do besides calling them out :( I did everything to prevent them too: I never went anywhere without my boyfriend, had my friends with me, was alert for signs and never went anywhere alone with someone but it wasn't enough. I honestly don't know what else I'm supposed to do to protect myself!

As someone who has been into fandom for a very long time. (Actually was on staff for the very first Anime Expo. Old man!) Then it was a very different world .I also feel that, as time has progressed, the respect has changed and loss of inhibitions now runs rampant. Years later, I now have kids who are into Anime, (let me be forthright though, their tastes and my tastes are COMPLETELY different! Miyazaki vs DBZ 🤔) Having not attended a con in a long time, I took two of my sons to a weekend con here in AZ. I thought it would be fun and I could hit up the hit up the dealers room with artists row. One of my boys dressed up as Professor Layton and the other as Phoenix Wright. (They looked great w/ the assist of their Mom who went way too overboard.😋) Convention day - Long story short, one had his hat continually-purposely knocked off and my younger one kept having fingers stuck in his face! (Objection!) Naïve to this and literally bullied from all sides, led them asking to change clothes after half a day. Later, when asked about going to another larger Con, no desire. ...sad. 😪)
BTW Larger Anime Conventions are about the same IMHO, but Comic fandom and Comicon in particular, is 10x worse!

I am sorry u got through that and i wish people look at the source of these problems and go for these creepy. Cause i seen things no one will believe at all and if i talk about it i get called sexist or perv. Like my friend who do cover characters or cover gender bend and some show a lil bit cleavage but nothing bad happens luckily but the problem is how we are normalizing sexual objectification by say it is empowering. Where we are ignoring people who were assaulted and tell them to be more revealing. Which is wrong and defeats the point. Now let me talk about pervs wtf these people wont stop and they will use their social media to sexually harassed ladies and saying it is just for the video or fun.like d piddy. Like it is unnecessary. Like people can make videos or a community with out sexual objectifying or touching a woman.

Honestly? People tend to forget that cosplay is supposed to be fun. So what if the cosplayer’s skin colour or weight isn’t the same as the character? If they’re having fun, then leave them alone. Don’t ruin other people’s fun for the sake of your own agenda. That’s my advice to all the toxic people in the cosplay community.
Also, people can get nitpicky af. I remember scrolling through the comments of a video with cosplayers saying what the worst thing you can say to a cosplayer is, and I came across one that just killed another bit of my faith in humanity. The commenter in question was cosplaying as a certain Cat Noir from Miraculous (excellent choice my dude :D), and someone came up to them and flat out said to their face that the bell was the wrong shade of gold.
    Bear in mind...
GOLD ONLY HAS ONE SHADE OF COLOUR.
Istg I’m a bit scared about getting into cosplay now. But to make the commenter feel better I roasted the gold obsessed idiot and said that next they’ll be saying Ladybug’s suit has an insufficient number of spots on it.

Thank yOU FOR MAKing this video! I got into cosplay in my early teen years (13) and have experienced some of the things u mentioned , but not seen anyone speak out about it publicly (I have heard similar horror stories from friends cosplaying), I'm an adult now (late teens) and I'm just glad these things are being talked about, for the next generation of cosplayers. Also u got a new sub, I thought your channel was bigger or deserved to be! :) Just like u said in another video, because these were typically male spaces, the character designs for females are wayy more revealing than the males most times and means that sometimes young girls are sexualising themselves by accident trying to dress like their favourite characters from anime / comics / movies whatever, and then they go to these conventions thinking it will be a safe space, sometimes by themselves, ik my first con I only went with my bro but we were so excited we ran in different directions and would just go off into our own fandoms. Which led to some creepy and unfortunate circumstances, but the attitudes of sexual assault at the time, I felt, put the blame on the cosplayer for dressing a certain way (but all the costumes are designed to be revealing for like school girls n shit like even sailor moons skirt is tinyyy , however I now realise that's just japans wierdness), more recently I have seen signs that "Cosplay does not equal consent" it's kinda sad it needs to be pointed out tho. when I was young it was people touching me inappropriately despite telling them to stop, or like u say just creepers asking for loads of hugs or thinking they can do whatever. I really want that attitude to change so I can continue cosplaying and going to cons with confidence and invite more of my friends to join the lil subculture and not have to worry about all the new youthians just getting into it. BIG COMMENT! never normally write this much, sorry about my grammar / spelling / punctuation ..etc

Keep up the good work dude !
I like that there is some kind of convergence of all the topics you (brilliantly) talk about. I just watched your video about our love for fictional characters, and I think it explains a lot of bad behaviour in the cosplay community.
With cosplay being more "mainstream", it's easy to just think "I'mma buy a cheap outfit online and go to next comicon", so you have to deal with the same standard creeps as any other situation where females can be targeted.
But what is interesting about this particular situation is that our love, or hate, for a fictional character can be triggered in different ways, and the usual toxic behaviour is enhanced by some more powerful feelings. If some people can be harsh, violent or disrespectful about someone they don't know, they can probably be even more when facing their favourite character. I mean, it can be seen as a realistic representation of a fictional emotional or sexual fantasy, or the opposite, a blasphemy or a disappointment. Either way, strong triggers.
I'm not part of the cosplay community, but a supporter. I first heard of cosplay 20 years ago maybe, via Japanese music and mangas. In Europe the term was completely new. And I'm really happy to see that it spread, in a good way. But I also have mixed feeling about its mainstreamness, especially when I see some videos on TH-cam (the "best of [convention] cosplays" type), showing almost exclusively girls trying to be sexy. It sends a wrong message.
But anyway, interesting topics, well made videos, entertaining content. Good job !

Bless you on speaking behalf of this because ever since the pandemic hit and Cons where online people tend to be "Professional" and shame others for not make their costumes and yes my respect as well. I remember one time I was attending a con online I wanted to know if there was a way to be involved on being a cosplayer without make a costume and the response I got from this "Pro" is "Not making a costume in the cosplay competitions doesn't get you money and bread the table." when really I have been to cons for good amount of time and some competitions allow you to enter if you have the costume designer representing you so it depends on the competition rules it all varies. It's also irratating someone as me who plus size and see another plus sized person for advice on how to advice on cosplaying and sources instead they chose to ignore and have someone answer there questions for them as they couldn't speak it so discouraging. If anyone has stories that relatable I am happy to read them.💕

I'm diagnosed with autism , I am a ♂️, I am a cosplayer for 2 to 3 years . I struggle with socializing with cosplayers on social media. I realized, most are girls in the community on social media, there are only few boys. And most cosplayers are active on Instagram. I barely can catch up with the speed of people chatting and posting things .
I usually try to find cosplayers who fit my same series interests and try to socialize, but I get end up easily blocked by girls who are in the majority , and I get the feeling everyone thinks I'm a creep. Honestly , I think these types are ridiculously judgemental. Despite claiming for tolerance and LGBT etc.
Do I have the right to stand up for myself under this disorders name, even if it's close to a personality disorder if the community is mostly about tolerance and diversity?
Because I'm afraid to call myself on the frontline:

The cosplay community is literally so toxic; everything from the racism to the fatphobia. Don’t even get me started on both cancel culture and deplatforming. While I love cosplaying, it can be overwhelming to see overflowing negativity, especially being a minority. If it’s not white cosplayers doing black face or taping their eyes to look Asian, it’s them speaking over us. Ableism is an issue in the cosplay community too. It’s a ball of “fun” that’s too deep for some to cover...

Maybe not so much about their feelings, as much about how their attitudes are. I would hope that people could see that Cosplayers are emulating, the characters that they are portraying, just as we, as musicians started out emulating people in bands that we loved! So, in a way, Cosplay has evolved in the same way! Fans imitating figures that they love! Have fun! Do what you love! People may not understand what you're doing. That's human nature!

I've been cosplaying for 2-4 years now. I'm still a minor, the first time I went to a con (I was 11) some guy asked me about my BOOBS. A CHILD. A FULL CHILD. HE LOOKED LIKE HE WAS 30. I was with my dad so he got me out of there but it was so uncomfortable, I wasn't even cosplaying a character that day because I left my Chiaki and Madoka Kaname cosplay at my separate parents house. I now identitify as a male but I just wanted to talk about that, also on my tik tok account (were I mainly cosplay female characters) I constantly get asked out. Ive gotten asked to do the wap in Chiaki cosplay during a livestream with my boyfriend in it. He was defending me half of the time and the guy who was flirting on me was over 18, MULTIPLE TIMES I SAID I WAS A CHILD. I feel uncomfortable cosplaying female characters because of how many times I get hit on or misgendered on purpose.

I do hope the cosplay community gets better and not turn more toxic, as a young cosplayer it is scary and uncomfortable known what is happening in a small part. However even if its small it still has a big impact and i already know that it may spread if it doesn't change. cosplay in my opinion is to dress up an fictional character, make friends, meet new people and just to have fun and to show your talent to others in the community or even people that aren't in the cosplay community.

    • @ana-isabel
      @ana-isabel  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Completely agree - cosplay is simply meant to be a fun and creative outlet for people to get together and share their love for all things fiction 😊 It's sad people have to inject their drama (or toxic behaviours) into it, but it'll happen - the best we can do is try our best to avoid it and not take part in it. :) Trust me, there are cosplayers out there who also just want to have fun and avoid unnecessary conflict - surround yourself with those people! ✨

When you watch a play and the actors come out at the end to greet the audience in costume you don't think it's okay to molest them or to tell them they don't have the body shape or skin tone to play that character.
But not alot of people watch plays anymore.
A degree of separation, the 4th wall even, is broken down between the character, the actor, and the spectator at conventions.

I agree with you 100%, it (the scene) was horrible when I started high school back in 1990 and oddly enough it hasn't improved much at all since and I can't understand why the fun of fandom constantly needs to have the fun sucked out of it like a cheep bag of cotton candy the moment girls/women also participate because they like that same stuff as well. Makes no sense at all to me. Fandom is fandom, appreciate it and revel in it and make new friends instead of marking out spots via territorial pissing. I also have to ask, is that blue bird stuffy in the back ground DJ Birdy or Ace from the Toronto Blue Jays? First thing that came to mind when the video started as a pop culture fan who also really enjoys sports at the same level.

From what I've gathered, these encounters can be summarized by one of the following two scenarios, but it seems a lot of people ignore the second one, in which there's definitely enough responsibility to go around for creating the situation.
    Scenario 1:
Cosplayer wears cosplay related to their fandom.
Creep: is handsey or crude to the cosplayer.
    Scenario 2:
Lewd cosplayer: barely covered and doing stripper poses.
Onlookers: conducts themselves around the lewd cosplayer the way they would behave around a stripper.
Lewd cosplayer: "They shouldn't behave this way. I should be able to dress however I want and be free of consequences, and these people need to not react to what I'm wearing."
For Scenario 1: throw the creep out. The cosplayer didn't invite that sort of attention.
For Scenario 2: if you aren't in business, don't advertise. Mayby the onlookers are creeps, but the attention was definitely invited.
