  • @blackmedic6302

    Hey man, love the vids! Just got 2 questions...1. Are you a mechanic because doing your own valve timing needs some skill and 2. Since you do everything yourself, don't you lose value on the bike as the service booklet doesn't get stamped by Ducati? Just curious, keep up the awesome vids!

    • @FancyAnimal
      @FancyAnimal  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’m a mechanical engineer with turbine engine, machine, and materials background…design machines for a living. Doesn’t mean I won’t do something stupid, but I usually can stumble through to the other side of most machines and devices. As for value, the bike has already been run-over and totaled so 🤷🏻‍♂️. Interestingly Seacoast Sport Cycle offers a class on DIY valves and is willing to work with you on warranty vs DIY to some extent. I wouldn’t recommend doing the valve service if under warranty. Personally there are better things I can think to do with $2000+parts than valve service on an 8 year old motorbike. BTW one valve shim is $30-$50. There are 16 shims on my bike and 32 on the V4. Cheers!

      @@FancyAnimal Damn man what an inspiration! There is an 899 for sale close to me but I asked all the Ducati service distributors about service costs and as you said, insanely expensive. I would love to be able to do my own services on a Desmo but I'm smart enough to know I'm too dumb for that XD. But I appreciate the time you took to reply, really enjoying your videos! Have a good one, cheers

      @@blackmedic6302 Honda SuperHawk or SV650 are a cheap and reliable way to enjoy a Ducati. I’d recommend rc51 but too pricey. I would buy a base 1299 over an 899 any day. 1299 is lighter and can be switched into 120hp mode until you get confidence to go 205. Buy it with less than 5k miles from a dealer with a warranty and ask to see the service record before you buy so you know what’s what. Only the valve service is insane. Everything else should be under warranty. You can do brake pads and oil changes yourself.

    • @FancyAnimal
      @FancyAnimal  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Bikes and Beats only inspected the front cylinder since none of those valves were out of spec. In fact only 1 of the 16 valve shims was out of spec between both cylinders.

    Great video!!! Question how many valves needed adjustment at 15 and 30k?
    I’m at 10k on my 1299
    Going to change air filter next week for first time.. going to look into the filter you use.

    • @FancyAnimal
      @FancyAnimal  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I'm doing a 4 part video series on step by step valve adjustment. With the 8 valves, there are 16 rockers and 16 shims. At 15k, all valves were in spec. At 30k, only 1 shim was out of spec. 5 shims were on the loose side, but in spec. Do your filter every 5-7k. Be sure to check the tightness of the 4 bolts in the corners of the subframe air box that attach the front of your bike to the engine while you're doing the filter. Cheers!

    • @nfloodauto
      @nfloodauto 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Seacoast is doing my 15k service.. I just find it funny you spend all that money at 15 & 30k to find a shim out of spec at 30.. I only ride my bike on streets with no track days.
      That’s for subframe tip!!

    • @FancyAnimal
      @FancyAnimal  5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey Fancy, I wonder if you had encountered this issue... The harness for the electronic front suspension, the sleeve can tear open, at top section near the top end of your front suspension. The dealer had told me they can't just order the sleeve, but need to order the whole Ohlin suspension set!! What do you recommend? Super glue??

    • @FancyAnimal
      @FancyAnimal  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I need more info. Are you referring to the lead that comes-off the top of the shock and snakes down around the steering head / subframe and into the electronics box under the fairing? That loose black vinyl wire jacket over the lead is tearing? If that's the case, buy some heat-shrink tubing, disconnect (gently) the connector at the top of the shock and slip the heat-shrink tubing over it and move to the desired location. Then hit it with a hair dryer. Test the tubing first before installing to be sure it shrinks to the right diameter. Please send a photo of the tear to my gmail... afancyanimal@gmail.com.

    I’m trying to change Spark Plug on my 2017 super sport S ... at the spark plug wire , seems very hard to pull out ? Is there any specific way to pull this cap/Wire ? Am I missing some lock ?

    • @FancyAnimal
      @FancyAnimal  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Johnny Hot Pie removing the Panigale plug wire required several attempts and all of my strength....along with several “holy sh@t that can’t be right.” Twist the wire boot around the plug back and forth to be sure the boot is not adhered to the plug surface. Then pull straight up, being sure not to bend the boot / break the plug. Take your time and grip as much of the boot as possible to prevent tearing. I don’t have specific experience with the SS, so calling the dealer service dept or consulting the manual is my disclaimer. Cheers!

    • @FancyAnimal
      @FancyAnimal  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      We have this debate among fellow engineers all the time. The metric system is based on water (1L H2O = 1000cc = 1kg). Imperial units are based on a some dead guy’s foot. A mile is a thousand Roman paces. A pace is 5.28 ft…so 5280 ft per mile.

    Just picked up a 1199 last week being going over it and getting it sorted been watching a lot of your old videos it has 7800 miles on it when should I be worried about the valve adjustment and does this bike really only have two plugs

    • @FancyAnimal
      @FancyAnimal  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      All my valves were in spec at 15K valve service. I did my own valve adjustment at 30k and only one of the 16 valve shims was out of spec. I have the service manuals and tightening torques in pdf if you want them.

    • @FancyAnimal
      @FancyAnimal  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      PS the 3 things that will definitely fail: the vertical cylinder valve cover gasket will leak oil at 7500 miles, quick shifter sensor / linkage will fail around 25k, and if you have ohlins forks look for them to leak around 15-18k miles. Use good oil and don’t run the bike in a lot of stop and go city traffic. It needs larger radiators. That’s my next upgrade. It’s the craziest machine you’ll ever ride.

    • @MrCougar1825
      @MrCougar1825 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@FancyAnimal gotcha thank you it’s got 7800 on the ticker
      so it’s pretty low millage I will take a look at the valve covers to make sure they are not leaking really appreciate all the info
