Lightroom V Affinity - and why Pro photographers can't use AFFINITY

  • UPDATE 1 - if you don't like the music - here's a version with no music
    • Lightroom V Affinity -...
UPDATE 2 - Got the latest release 1.8.3. and re-tried the HDR merge, see if it's improved here
    • Has Afinity Photo Impr...
This started out as a quick comparison between LIGHTROOM and AFFINITY's HDR blending. I shoot property (real estate) and HDR is a great way to get all the detail, so I'm always on the look out for new, faster and more efficient ways to blend my RAW files.
The video shows you in some detail how it works in LIGHTROOM, so hopefully, that's useful to some.
I then give AFFINITY the same files and blending settings, and the shocking truth about its HDR processing speed is revealed
You can sit through the video of it blending if you like, to feel the full pain of the product, but I'd skip through to 12 or so minutes to get my conclusions
To be fair, many of its other features work just fine - it's more like Photoshop than Lightroom to use, and the Frequency Separation is lovely, but I question whether this HDR should be included when it's so incredibly slow.

Yeah I realise that now! It was a really quiet classical piece and I didn't realise how loud it got in parts....
I guess the main point I was trying to make is that it takes around 6 or 7 minutes for affinity start to respond.
If I get chance I will reupload with no music

I agree with Tel, the music is over the top but what do you expect as it is all about a major battle. Keep it softer and all will be well, see Nigel Danson for a musical comparison.

Yes, music was bit too loud. Very nice piece, I think Tchaikowski, 1842. Was waiting for the cannons at the end, they did not make it. Guess Affinity was not slow enough 😉

If you ran Affinity directly after LR and left LR open then you completely gimped Affinity, as LR was completely hogging all your system resources, especially memory, and Affinity comes defaulted to use minimal memory. So of course it will take forever when it's set to be careful with memory and not use much AND another program is already using most of the memory.

I've just bought Affinity so I can do some more comparisons - I guess it's strengths are in more general processing rather than HDR so only fair to do some stuff around that.

I have been using Affinity for over 2 years now and will never go back to Adobe. Affinity is a serious bit of kit but it takes time to learn. Also if you really need to shoot the dreaded HDR images then maybe you should use a camera that will do it for you. My 8 year old Oly EM1 can make HDR images in camera with just one shot.

Photo is meant to be an alternative to Photoshop. Perhaps a comparison to ACR would be better? Or Lightroom vs Capture One, or Luminar. There’s nothing in PS that I can’t do in AP for editing a photo. For developing a raw I use C1 still because it’s more robust than any other raw developer.

Maybe Affinity Photo is optimized for mac hardware. I could not understand what you were saying. London

Affinity Photo is much faster, at least on my Mac since this was made. Affinity can also use NIK plugins which is my preferred way to make HDR images. I started using it as a test for my professional work a few years ago and I haven't touched Photoshop since since. Just did not need to. So professionals can can and do use it quite effectively. Plus the iPad version is amazing on an iPad Pro. There are always rumours Serif is going to make a DAM app to fill out the suite, tif they do that would be a better thing to compare to lightroom.

For property photography I wouldn't use HDR ever. Non photographers can't tell if its HDR or not, but I would not feel happy, it feels kind of fake and the time taken to mess about merging them and trying to get the fake looking tones, light and white balance etc correct is more hassle than its worth. There was plenty of light in the scene, I'm guessing he is just doing HDR to show comparisons with Affinity, but as I say, I would have just exposed it properly in the first place, then process the one image. Much easier, as I have done in the past (been out the game a few years). I liked the music though, ignore others moaning about it. Better than using freeware internet muzak which is horrendous.

You're bagging how long Affinity Photo takes to batch file or merge photos, Tell me this, How long and how many versions of Photoshop is there, I think it's around 17 or so, Affinity Photo is "ONE", Give it time and they WILL get faster as they release more and better versions. I'd still prefer AP rather than paying the BULLSHIT monthly subscription, and here in Australia, converting from au to us is nearly $30 and Fracken month, Frack that jack. I paid $$89au and it's MINE, Bloody MINE. No monthly subscription for me that's for sure.

    • @ademcfade
      @ademcfade  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

As I said in my comment on your last comment, I can only review what is avalable, and in it's current form, the merge function of Affinity is not fit for purpose yet.
I do look forward a faster version and hope they do come up with something to truly compete, then I'll be right behind you in tue queue to buy it.
But for professional photographers, it's not really an option in early 2019 (when i did the video)
