    I found that f/stop/aperture is easier to understand for beginners if the f number is viewed as a fraction like shutter speed; for example F4 equates to 1/4,. f16 = 1/16 etc. It shows a correlation to lens opening and the amount of light transmitted through the lens. Also explains those depth of field marks on mostly old school lenses. I guess I am giving away my age and my Nikkormat.

    Great stuff Simon! Do you keep the focus type default or priorities on phase or contrast. From what I've read: phase is faster but contrast is more accurate.. ??

  • @flavioserci6046
    @flavioserci6046 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I don't have problems with single subjects. The problems are with landscapes and far mountains, far forest, etc. With the infinity the lens are not so precise. My canon 7D mk ii is perfect with birds, animals, people... but in landscapes the autofocusing is not the best choice.

  • @OldGirlPhotography
    @OldGirlPhotography ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Not sure I heard right, but just wanted to confirm. Most mirrorless cameras have some form of phase detect autofocus - example, Canon Dual Pixel Autofocus. The big complaint about Panasonic mirrorless autofocus was that it used contrast detect and was one of the last brands to do so. I think all major mirrorless brands now use phase detect. Most DSLR's, at least the newer ones, use phase detect for a portion of the field of view when the mirror is down, but use contrast detect in live view when the mirror is up. Each works well in specific situations, as you outline. Phase detect I believe is more responsive for moving subjects. Again, not really meaningful for figuring out how to nail focus each time, but just wanted to drop that in.

    • @bradkerr2798
      @bradkerr2798 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Olympus and Panasonic have almost exclusively used Contrast Detect, with Olympus moving to PDAF on some of the newest cameras and Panasonic using a refinement of Contrast they call DFD. Older Sonys were contrast only. Canon uses Dual-Pixel AF on MILC, which is a different technology with pros and cons vs on-sensor PDAF. Nikon, Fuji and Sony have PDAF and Contrast detect hybrid on all their current MILC cameras, the Nikon 1 series being the first to do so.
      DSLRs essentially all use PDAF with mirror down, mirror up can be whatever the sensor has, like the Nikon D780 having on-sensor PDAF for hybrid, most Canon using Dual-Pixel, but most others using contract only. DSLR PDAF still has the advantage of larger light gathering sites that keep their faster speed down to their light limit don't affect image quality for focus, but MILC has the advantage of being able to switch over to contrast detect in low light, while losing some light gathering ability due to the split pixels.

    Here's a question for any experts: How can I maximize the effectiveness of autofocus in a contrast system (I shoot on Fuji X-T3 and 4) when I have to shoot wildlife (in my case, whales) on a low-contrast day (clouded over, mid-day, more 'glary' than dark, if you know what I mean, some haziness, a colorless day). I'm going to stop there and not bog my question down with mechanical facts, in case there is just some obvious idea I have not learned yet. Oh, just one: the camera took the photographs even though it was set not to fire unless focus was achieved. [Edit a couple hours later:] I stumbled upon something that seems peculiar to the Fuji cameras (before the newer models, anyway). I made an incorrect choice by choosing AF-C instead of AF-S in these conditions. That is, it was a darkish day and I wanted a narrow aperture to get some forgiveness in depth of field. I had been wondering if my narrow aperture (pretty severe: f/16 on the 100-400 - just a sign of my lack of experience and confidence) could cause problems for AF because of absence of light. From what I have read, AF-C will keep my chosen aperture and thus deliver less light to the AF function, whereas if I had shot on those days with AF-S the camera would open the aperture to get focus, then stop down to f/16 as directed by myself in that case. Well, this is what I read today. But I am so new to this, so if anyone knows differently please share. Also, I realize this phenomenon might be peculiar to what are now out-of-date Fuji cameras.

    • @simon_dentremont
      @simon_dentremont  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      No, the Af-C and Af-S choice doesn’t affect your aperture, just your focus. Af-c is good for whales and any moving subjects. But f/16 os much smaller than you needed. f/8 for lots of depth of field would be fine, and your iso will be lower and image quality better.

    One low light trick I use is: If the subject is fairly stable, I crank my shutter speed to a very long exposure which in turn gives the camera enough light to focus. i then bring shutter speed back to where I want it then take the pictures. I am using back button focusing so this means my focus will not change when taking the pics.

    • @johnsmith1474

      I don't get that at all. What the camera sees to focus is not dependent on shutter speed is it? The camera focuses at full open aperture in the given light, and the chosen aperture and shutter only come in at exposure. Perhaps you are talking about live view?

    • @dennisharris144
      @dennisharris144 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Manufacturers like to convince us how MILC cameras are far better at AF ... well here at 6:00 we finally hear the truth, that they suck at certain scenes.
    Pre-focusing is ONLY way to take shot of moving target with lens that have screw driven AF, such as Tamron 70-200. The lens itself can't track because it is too slow to find focus soon enough and constantly just hunt and adjust. Prefocusing make shot possible. Even very fast racing car directly toward camera.

    Let's not forget that your eyes need to be in focus for your camera to be in focus. Wear proper eye correction for distance & near especially if you're over 40yrs old and using your screen as you focus. Although limited in range, also set your viewfinder's dioptric adjustment.

    Simon, I am a rookie in photography. I saw this video and a question comes to my mind. What is considered “in focus “ You photos looks amazingly sharp. But mist of mine too. But the story changes when I zoom the photo 150%,200%, etc. what is ok or acceptable and how much is too much. In 100% my photo looks great or ok. Is that good enough? Do I have to look for new techniques like the ones you mentioned? Thanks in advance for your answer. W think first you must define what “in focus” is, then you present mitigations ir strategies to avoid out of focus.

    Simon, I shoot the Lumix G9 with the 2.4 and later firmware upgrades and have found, with a little bit of direct sunlight, it focuses better than its TH-cam reputation would suggest, even for birds. I use the center square focusing mode overlaid with the camera's animal detect feature. I shoot with the Leica Lumix 100-400mm lens and was wondering if I bought a OM-1 system camera as a second body do you think its ability to focus would be superior? Dramatically so? Lumix seems to really be pushing the limits of contrast focusing and I was wondering why when so many opinions favor phase-detect autofocus. Simplicity?

    • @simon_dentremont
      @simon_dentremont  ปีที่แล้ว

      Contrast-based seems to be improving all the time. I don’t know about the G9, but the OM-1 has a solid reputation.

    very educational. Simon, at min 4:20 you mentioned the technique of lighting the tree in FG to photograph the milky way afterwards... may I ask what aperture you used in that shot pls? did you use wide opening aperture or not?

    • @simon_dentremont
      @simon_dentremont  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I shoot the milky way sky wide open (f1.4 or f1.6) because I need to shoot a short exposure to stop its movement. But for the land/tree I stop down to f2.8 or f4 and shoot 5 minutes if I need to as nothing is moving. I do that to get more depth of field, like to get the grass in focus too. Then I blend the two halves in Photoshop.

    • @simon_dentremont

    I shoot the moon (focal 35mm), but diagonal rays from the light appear in the photo. To avoid them, do I need some kind of filter or can you remove them with the camera settings?

    • @simon_dentremont
      @simon_dentremont  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Those are lens flares and can tough to control with settings. If you own a neutral density filter, it may cut them down (but not guaranteed). More expensive lenses have coating and designs to reduce them.

    hi Simon, maybe it's too simple a question. how do you focus on the edge of the subject? how does the camera know you want to focus on the edge of the subject in autofocus mode? As far as I know, you have to use a joystick to focus on a particular part of the scene. thank you.

    • @simon_dentremont
      @simon_dentremont  ปีที่แล้ว

      You should have a focus point visible in the viewfinder. Either point it at the edge, or like you say, move the point there.
