I have the Rolex Submariner I can't swim, I'm a Bus Driver worked overtime for nearly 2 years to pay for it.

Let's be honest, divers probably don't use Rolexes. It's never been about diving. Somehow this design became the universally popular watch design as it is today, because it seems to strike a chord in most people's hearts. That's the reason behind dive watches' success. Few people use them for actually diving. Real divers have way more reliable gear today than mechanical watches

I am lucky enough to own a Submariner Date. The thrill of the chase so to speak and how difficult it was to get made me want it. Had it within six months after what seemed like a job interview with my dealer. Will never sell it.
Wow. Luckily I bought mine years ago when it was much easier and much cheaper. It’s crazy.

I've always love to watch your videos. Very well made and informative with nice visuals. It's true everyone wants a sub, or at least most people want a sub, just not for me, especially with the new release of pelagos 39. I already have 2 diver watches from tudor and if I want to add one more diver into my collection, the new pelagos is the one and only desired piece. But there is one rolex watch that I desire now and probably is my grail watch as it's impossible to get from AD and I'm on waitlist just recently. It's the GMT master II pepsi with jubilee bracelet.

The Seamaster came out in 1948 - five years before the Submariner.

Apart from those who companies and individuals who have purchased and used as the tool watch that it is the remainder who purchase it as a status symbol, an ornament or a trophy are those who consider it a luxury watch. A luxury ? Maybe a fine piece of engineering but it is a luxury only to those who don't have access to real levels of money, appealing to those who have normal working lives, average or medium levels of income spending probably a third of a years salary on a piece or obtaining it on plastic or credit. Rolex's marketing thru it's association with high end sport and personal achievers have created it's own legend and desirability, you only need to look at where they sponsor and where they advertise, all very normal places appealing to mass market audiences Within the overall high end watch market a Sub is, yes, a fantastic piece but at the very low end of LUXURY, which is not attainable by 99.9% of people. A Sub for the vast majority who wear it are those who want to say, look at me, look what I have, I am special, I came into some money, I got a decent bonus this year, but generally and otherwise very ordinary people who do not live a LUXURY lifestyle. That is why most but not all people want a SUB. Not for the excellence of the watch but as a statement.
Because price go up.
The question on my mind is, why, when everyone wants one, doesn’t Rolex produce them in greater numbers?

Personally, I feel like the modern Rolexs have become glittery shadows of their former selves since the quartz crisis.
I look at them and see a sort of iterative perfection, but now without a soul.
It's sad but sometimes we become victims of our own success.
That's why I'm so happy about Tudor's development in later years.
They've basically made something closer to what Rolex used to be.
I love the vintage warmth of the standard black bay 58 and the 58 bronze, the snowflake hands, the matt bezel.
To me, that's where the soul of Rolex has reappeared.
The king is dead. Long live the king.
Prefer my Panerai. Everybody has a Sub these days.

Only people with no imagination who want to impress people because Rolex is the only watch brand non-watch people recognise are willing to vastly overpay for a very mediocre watch.
Get the watch that the submariner is an homage of instead; The Blancpain Fifty Fathoms.

I don’t, I prefer the GMT and Daytona
I have a DJ41, Pepsi GMT II, and a Daytona. Haven't really considered a submariner as it doesn't appeal to me. Too many fakes out there, doesn't really stand out, and is on the "cheaper" side of Rolex. I don't get the fascination to be honest.
@John Smith if your spending 8+ on a Sub , you can afford the GMT a couple of hundred more , if the Sub is 'cheap' Rolex then the GMT is as well....
Wise makes great 904L watches for under 600$ with very good calibers and great design and specs.

The Blancpain 50 fathoms was first and omega makes also iconic divers.
We can now say the Rolex is slap proof. Just ask Chris rock.
