    I first saw the Rolex Sub. at the Rolex store in Zurich. I was 13 and it was 1962. I never forgot that watch. When I got out of college in 1972, I looked around for a new watch. It turned out that my local Rolex dealer had just received a sub back from someone who was unable make the final payments. They let me have it for $150. It was a 1966 model 5512, 4 line, chronometer. I have worn the watch daily ever since and never wanted any other. While today it would not pass the chronometer certification testing, the design remains absolutely iconic. In the same class as the Mercedes Gullwing and P-51 Mustang, no other watch comes anywhere close.

    In 1982, my future brother in law stopped by our home to visit my sister. He was wearing a Submariner. I saw it on his wrist and was instantly mesmerized. "State of the Art!" he exclaimed when I asked about it. It cost him $600. I finally was able to purchase one 38 years later (it was not $600). Purchased the 114060 and ABSOLUTELY love it. Great candidate for a "one watch collection." Love the video - thanks to you both!

    Great video, very informative and enjoyable. The Submariner is arguably the most iconic watch of all time. Even non-watch people know what it is and recognize it. Personally, I've wanted a Sub ever since seeing it on the wrist of Sean Connery in the James Bond films of the early 1960's. I now own a 126610LV and it was worth the wait, as it is a truly marvelous watch.

    I bought my Submariner in Vietnam in 1969 and still wear it today over 52 yrs later. It has only stopped running twice . I’ve had it refurbished a few times and it still keeps very accurate time. It was manufactured in 1966 according to the serial number so that makes it a rare vintage Rolex. You can’t put a price on an heirloom like this.

    I bought a sub date in 2004 while on vacation in the Bahamas, it is a rugged watch and I have beat the heck out of it over the years and it just keeps going, unfortunately I recently smashed the crystal on the corner of a granite counter top and that did it in so I had to send it in for service, ouch that cost a couple grand.

  • @starsnstripesus1
    @starsnstripesus1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    By the way, I have to disagree with you about it being at a great price point; we're talking around $10K with tax. I wouldn't say that's exactly an entry level price point. Now something like the Oyster Perpetual at around $6K is probably more entry level, if you can call a watch that costs $6K entry level.

    It took me a while to buy a Submariner (or a Rolex in general), but after 15 years of collecting, I relented last year and purchased a Sub Date. Although the rest of my collection is intentionally non-versatile, the Sub is the one piece that is.

    A Kermit Stainless sub is selling on the second hand market for $24k. Royal Oak and Over Seas retail price ranges. Hulk’s are above $30k!! Even a black on black sub is $16k. . I agree, one watch - Rolex Sub. But you just can’t get them for the price you should get it for. So now it’s Omega, Octa, etc since the sub has become unobtanium.

    I had a few bucks about 25 years ago and within year purchased a Rolex DateJust two tone, Submariner two tone blue dial, and Explorer II. I sold the Submariner a couple of years ago. I found that I wasn’t wearing the Sub as much as the Explorer II. In fact, when I took on an overseas assignment, I took the Explorer II with me because of the two time periods you could keep. The Sub felt heavier on my wrist and I thought it was best to part with something that spent a lot of time in a drawer. However, I did recently go into the local shop and took a look at a new Sub! I’m intrigued about the 70 hours capability as well as the much brighter dial for night wear. Who knows, maybe if I get a few bucks again…..

    Husband bought his Sub in 1996 in Maui for about $3K. Wore it until 2018 when it stopped ticking. Feared that salt water had gotten in when the crown was left unscrewed during a SCUBA trip in St. Croix.
    Nope...just routine service, which is now $750 from Rolex in 2022. Only use a Rolex dealer to send your watch to one of the 3 USA service centers and make sure you are clear that you only want Rolex working on the watch.
    The watch is nearly bullet proof, and always accompanies us on dives as the one way bezel is very easy to use for 'at-a-glance' down time measurement.
    1998 was the last year for tritium illumination, so it's cool that it still has that dial face, however, the half life of tritium is 15 years, so there is effectively no illumination remaining. That said, the phosphor is slowly gaining a radiation-induced aging or patina as a result of the radioactivity, so it will become more classic looking with age!
    My husband likes the adjustability of the band for placing over wetsuits and he has it set for a 3 mil suit, however, after hearing a story of another Sub owner who lost his Rolex when the suit compressed and allowed the watch to slip off...he now only straps it directly to his wrist and will roll up the suit sleeve as needed.
    No gripes with the watch...it is serious equipment for active people and it's nearly impossible to kill it. Just get it serviced every decade.

    The people who actually enjoy their sub will tell you it is because it is a versatile, well made watch. Unfortunately, the sub is a status watch more than anything else, the equivalent of Louis Vuitton or driving a Mercedes...too many people care about being seen and wanting others to see them also. Dear Sir / Madame, I don't know if you'll be at all interested in what follows, however I have unashamedly had a love affair with my Rolex since about 1984. That was when I purchased my Rolex Submariner. This unbeknown to me was a " Red Submariner ", and yes I have gone to some effort both here in England and in Australia to have it's authenticity confirmed. Unfortunately I have neither the box or the documentation. What really mattered to me was it's consistent reliability, so for over 38 years, I have had it serviced twice and pretty much worn it every day, and I still take great pride and joy in doing so. Any way I thought you enthusiasts might find that of some interest. Best wishes to all James. West. Yorks. UK
