In any event, this is a great performance, I'm just flagging that it feels like some vocal processing and doubling and perhaps a little auto-tune tech is used, but good luck to him. It describes the turmoil my country endured through my formative years. And actually, there's a much more personal reason why I love American Pie. When I was a child through the 60's my mother always sang me a song at bedtime. So when I had a daughter in the 90's & 00's I would bring my guitar into her bedroom every night and we'd sing a bedtime song of her choice together. I usually brought in a 3-ring binder of songs I had printed. And her favorite bedtime song was.... you guessed it. American Pie! I sang this song hundreds of times for my daughter at bedtime. When she was very young it was adorable when she'd make the sign of the cross when it got to The Father, Son and The Holy Ghost. Too cute for words. Now lest you think my daughter was a much deeper thinker than a regular 6 year old would be I should point out that the actual reason she chose American Pie more than any other song was because it was the LONGEST SONG in my 3 ring binder. And children have their priorities at bedtime. "Read me the long one Daddy" :) Nonetheless, to me American Pie is a masterpiece. And listening to and seeing interviews with Don McLean I can tell that he and I are, to a large degree, cultural birds of a feather. I respect him and I understand what loss he was lamenting in American Pie. I have two older brothers who were about Don's age, and I got to understand the sock hop era through them. The other day I got a text message out of the blue from my now 28 year old daughter who said "GUESS WHAT SONG IS ON THE RADIO?!?!?!" Shared memories.... they're the best!

We saw Don at a small music venue in Houston, TX a few years before this performance in Austin. He ended with American Pie and brought the crowd to its feet, all singing in unison - it was an amazing moment! I saw him live at the Dominion Tottenham Court Rd in 1979 with my 8 an 10 year old sons. You can work out how old they are now! I am 77 and can never forget his encore. He came on without the guitar and sang 'Stardust" acapella and brought the house down. I have never seen the like of it, before or since. Rock on DM
I’m a boomer and this song is without a doubt one of the best songs ever written if not the best of our generation. It always brings back a memory from being 15 years old when this song was new and playing on the radio. My family and others were on a camping trip and only one of us boys were old enough to have a drivers license and so him and us other two were boys were asked to drive back into town for additional supplies (Times have changed) As we were cruising at what I remember to be about the legal speed limit American pie came on the radio and that’s when it happened. The three of us started singing along to the song at the top of our lungs when the driver realized he had been pushing down on the accelerator the whole time as we were singing and realized we were then cruising along at about 95 mph on a two lane country highway marked at 55 mph! Fortunately nothing bad happened as we slowed down and continued on but I still have that exhilarating memory of my youth, ah to be young again.
Don, we all know what this song is all about, The 3 wonderful people we lost in that terrible plane crash that cold day on 2-3-59. This song touches me deeply and I thank you. Whoever engineered / oversaw the audio mix / recording deserves a Grammy. Basically almost every issue that plagues live recordings was addresses here. It also helps when you have talent that is consistent. This is why you need the actual performers at the soundcheck.

I’m a boomer and this song is without a doubt one of the best songs ever written if not the best of our generation. It always brings back a memory from being 15 years old when this song was new and playing on the radio. My family and others were on a camping trip and only one of us boys were old enough to have a drivers license and so him and us other two were boys were asked to drive back into town for additional supplies (Times have changed) As we were cruising at what I remember to be about the legal speed limit American pie came on the radio and that’s when it happened. The three of us started singing along to the song at the top of our lungs when the driver realized he had been pushing down on the accelerator the whole time as we were singing and realized we were then cruising along at about 95 mph on a two lane country highway marked at 55 mph! Fortunately nothing bad happened as we slowed down and continued on but I still have that exhilarating memory of my youth, ah to be young again.

Don, we all know what this song is all about, The 3 wonderful people we lost in that terrible plane crash that cold day on 2-3-59. This song touches me deeply and I thank you. I’m 53 and been listening to it all my life and to this day, April 2022 , It still runs chills up my spine every time I listen to it. I just want to say thank you for giving us such a beautiful song.
