For the longest time, I was on Bret's side but the more I looked into all the facts, I now lean towards Vince and the honored tradition of passing the torch to the next "up and commer". Bret seemed difficult to work with during this time period. I love Bret and think he's a phenomenal showman inside and outside of the ring, however, he needed to loosen up and do what was right for the company. Bret needs to remember, life inside the ring is a "work". It's not real.
It's an oddity. Both sides were in the right, yet both sides were in the wrong at the same time..

Hell of a show
From ca mid 1993, Vince never saw Bret as the next Hulk Hogan. Instead he tried it with Luger in Mid- to late 1993 with the Lex Express and the All American gimmick. Went back to Bret when that failed. Tried to build a new next Hogan in Diesel in late 1994, through 1995. That failed, so he went back to Bret again only for Bret to put over Vince next project, HBK. So while Bret was a solid worker and draw, he was never the draw McMahon hoped for. That is why Vince decided to rather go with HBK in late 1997, and not Bret, chosing to go back on his contract. On top of that, after not affording Bret Hart (Or rather see Bret as a good investment) he offered The Ultimate Warrior of all people a very luckrative contract, only to be declined by Warrior.
Heck, even Bruce Prichard said himself that he thinks that Vince never saw Bret as THE guy.

I've always thought about this. What if they would have let Bret win the match and as soon as he gets thru the curtain, they immediately take the belt away from him. Would that have been another option? Just a thought 🤔

It wasn't an issue about the physical belt. Madusa took her WWF belt to WCW and threw it in the garbage on live TV. There was a lawsuit and WWF won; hence, there wasn't a concern about Bret doing that and WCW making that same mistake. The issue was Bishoff taking Bret on after he left the WWF as the World Champion. They could not let Bret leave as a champion. As @Dave Sampson said, the belt must be won or lost in the ring.
