  • Get ready for the ultimate MUSANG KING DURIAN Showdown!
    Join me as I bravely take on the king of fruits for the first time in SS2, Kuala Lumpur.
    With so many choices of Durian available, it's like a fruity battlefield out here!
    The smell hits me like a punch in the face, but I'm determined to conquer my fear and try it. Will I be a Durian warrior or a wimpy fruit-fearer?
    Join me on this adventure as I face my anxiety, life choices, and a fruit that's not to be messed with! Let the Durian showdown begin, and may the best man (or fruit) win!

    Tips for first timer - eat fresh durians like this. Don’t get the frozen ones. Although there’s nothing wrong with the frozen ones, but eating fresh you’ll immediately know if you like it or you don’t. When you eat frozen durians you don’t know if the fruits are still in good condition.

      "although there's nothing wrong with the frozen ones"
      As a durian lover, it's wrong to put durian in the freezer or refrigerator. Once it chilled or frozen, it won't taste as good as the fresh ones.

    • @asmrlova
      @asmrlova ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Durian lose its sweetness when frozen. Durian also not as sweet when you pluck it before its ripen. These 2 factors are the main reason why Malaysia will never be as big as Thailand as durian exporter. We believe to truly enjoy durian, you have to have it as fresh as possible.

    • @roughmzin2510
      @roughmzin2510 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@manalittlesis I think the taste is very subjective. I try not to dwell on that too much. Because there are some durian lovers who prefer cold durians rather than fresh/warm ones. Furthermore, the freeze-dried technology we have now preserves the taste better than the normal freezing. Only in the last 10 years, durians that are exported are mostly freeze-dried to ensure longer shelf life and to maintain freshness. We are lucky to have fresh durians available all year long, but this is not the case for everyone outside the tropics.

    • @whlawson5812
      @whlawson5812 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@roughmzin2510 properly selected, properly frozen, stored and flown over durians are still better than the way durian was exported out 10 years ago.
      If frozen durians in USA or HK or UK could retain 90% of its taste & texture it is already as good as it can be. Win- win for farmers & durian lovers. Regards

    Just loved to see how you changed your mind after only one bite! My Thai wife tried to convince me for almost 17 years that I wouldn't regret to taste it at least one time. Finally I made this step and - what can I say - it just blew me away! The smell may be a little strange to some people but when biting into this creamy custard it feels like tasting a naturally grown dessert, full of different flavours and an amazing texture, with a little aftertaste of onions which IMO goes pretty well together.
    Last week we just came back from our three week holiday in Thailand and I guess that I've spent more money for Durian than for our accomodation. Guess I'm addicted from now 🙂

      @@streetwisetravellers yes they are. It is really an acquired taste but there are good and bad. Once you get over this hurdle and like it, your journey begin. You will get to one durian that will blow you off and and you'll feel your journey was worth it. Legendary.

      @@streetwisetravellersyep there's no inbetween, pretty normal. There are even some of native Malaysians who can't stand durian (very lil amount though). The rest of us, LOVE IT.

      My wife actually grew to love it. She couldn't even finish one seed the first time she tried. The second time, she did not hate it as much but not loving it either. Then one day, she suddenly said she had a craving for durians and became hooked after the third attempt. I think the taste after the second time lingered in her mind for some time, which made her want to try again.

    Congratulations for finally overcome your fear with Durian. 😊 You've now ascending to another level.
    Btw, the steps to have Musang King as the last is correct. Otherwise, If after Musang King you only eat other Durian types, you won't be able to taste those, the magical Musang King will be sort of made those tasteless 😅

    There is an art to eating durians…. kind of hierarchy to follow but I’m glad you got the sequence right. For first timer like yourself, Red Prawn is sweet in nature and lighter taste hence it should be eaten first - as a gesture to introduce the durian to your taste palette. For second durian, the Tupai King (TK) which was ‘bitterly’ in nature would then prepare your taste palette to get ready for the 3rd choice Musang King (MK) which appears to be sweet in nature as can be seen from the color of the flesh. Therefore, the ‘bitterly’ taste from TK would have enhanced your taste palette to accept the sweet MK to a greater height. If the flesh of MK a were a little ‘greenish’ in its color - usually they are a little bitter or bitter-sweet.
    FYI, if you had started MK as your first choice, then the TK would have tasted differently and Red Prawn would have tasted somewhat ‘bland or less-sweet’ which would then make your experience somewhat different.
    As a guideline, always start with a milder taste then on to the stronger taste durians so that it doesn’t confuse your taste palette.
    Bravo for overcoming your fear and conquered the ‘King’ … which makes you ‘King of the Kings’ !😂

    Indonesian & Malaysian Durians are super awesome. Thai & Vietnamese Durians are not as creamy or aromatic, full of carbs! I hv tried Indonesian Durians in Medan Sumatra & Padang, awesome & inexpensive. But West Malaysian Durians from Penang’s Balik Pulau, Kedah, Pahang, Johor Segamat, are all irresistable!

    All westerners that i know of who came to love durian all have blogs about durians. Don't play play, they're more serious than locals. Durians have everything, from chemicals smells, aromas, textures, nose smell, aftertastes, pungency, astringency, starchiness, post-fall fermentation alcohols, some are deep orange colored, or sweetness and bitterness, not forgetting, organic durians, seaside durians, Borneon durians etc.

    Musang king is expensive, but you missed 1 more type, the "the black thorn" this is the most expensive, price range could reach from rm180 - rm300 depends on the weight. Durians became expensive because China used to import this fruits to their country.

      @@streetwisetravellers Most of the Durians are from Pahang state, however, if you happen travel to Penang Island, probably you can try Durian Susu (Milky flavour Durian) and Durian Daun Hijau (if I remember the name correctly). I ate all these Durians (that time they offered Durians Buffet) during Malaysia Agricultural Festival few years back at MAHA Seri Kembangan, Selangor, well the taste of Susu & Daun Hijau are quite similar to other premium durians. It was cheaper mayb cuz it was not as popular as other premium durian. Well, worth trying.
