      If the durian is hard means its unripe. Thailand durian usually harvested around 70-80% ripeness depending on sales to local market or overseas export. When u harvest the fruit before it was ripe... most of the time the flavour and the nutrition value was a bit lacking. These also apply to other fruits. Us Malaysian usually wont eat such durian but the Thailandness local usually prefer such texture.... crispy outside, a bit soft inside.

      sugarapple is ripe if it gives slightly when gently pressed. sugar apples can be bought ready to eat, or still hard to the touch. If so, allow to ripen over several days before eating.

      There are many grades of durian..based on the soil that they grow. The best is from Nonthaburi. Now they are very expensive. But all the land which used to be orchards are turned into housing estates and most best durian trees have gone.

    Fun fact, guava originally came from the american continent brought to asia by the Spaniards sometime ago. The red specie is closet to original form of fruit. It is readily available in the US (safeway and some health food market or some mexican markets). Guava get very juicy when ripe but it will smell kinda fermented. Enjoy!

    The sugar apple (custard apple)'s skin can be easily peeled off, you don't need to cut it in half.
    Long Kong and Longan may sounds quite similar, to avoid confusion try to call Longan in local Thai word instead - "Lum yai" (ลำไย - use Google translate for the actual pronounciation)

    • @NataliesPassport
      @NataliesPassport  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    When you pick a sugar apple, you need to gently press the outside. The more it's soft, the more it's ripe and sweet. If it's ripe enough, you can open it with your hands. Have you ever tried a sapodilla - a brown fruit with egg shape on the left of guava? It's also soft and sweet. I suggest you pick a brown and soft one and don't forget to peel it before you eat.

      @@NataliesPassport Many Thai fruits have medicinal properties such as
      Mangosteen has properties to reduce heat inside the body. Help adjust the functioning of the intestines and internal organs in the body.
      Durian is high in sugar and carbohydrates. (Do not eat durian with alcohol strictly. dangerous and potentially deadly)
      Longan (the rind is tougher than Longkong and has small dots on the rind) has a high sugar content. Provides high energy to the body, dry longan can be preserved for a long time, can be boiled in water to make drinks.
      Longkong (yellow skin and softer than longan) has cooling properties like mangosteen.
      Guava is rich in vitamin C. Improve the functioning of the intestines for good health
      Papaya is rich in dietary fiber. It helps to adjust the function of the intestines and helps to excrete well.

    It's wonderful the same fruits in Thailand, Burma and Malaysia are the same as in central southern and western America, I saw white guava or araçá, pink guava, ata, peach papaya from the swamp, tangerine 🍊 and 🍊🧡, potatoes are the same, Thailand is a beautiful, plentiful and gluttonous country, in terms of taste and cuisine it is our sister region, in terms of fruits and vegetables we have similar and equal taste and beautiful to see that.

    The best way to eat durians is not hard nor soft. Harder durians could mean they’re still young and not at their best taste. If the smell is mild it could mean that they’re not quite ready and you might need to wait a day or two before you eat them. Please also be careful with noi-nah’s seeds as they can slip into your throat which can be dangerous. Longan is called “Lam-yai” in Thai. This might be easier for you to distinct the name from Long-gong. 😊

    • @NataliesPassport
      @NataliesPassport  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      We tried softer durians before and we hated them so we tried to get a harder one for our parents first time!! Luckily it was better than the other ones we tried! But yes lam-yai is a lot easier than longan/longgong lol ❤️
