  • The Canon EOS R6 has a lot of great qualities but it also has some significant downsides. In this video I share my real world experiences with this camera and describe its shortcomings for shooting videos.
There are still many positives to this camera and it may be a good fit for you:

I just got the R6 for video. I am very impressed with it. I don't record more than 10min of 4k30 at once so overheating is not an issue for me. The autofocus blows my Panasonic away and the ibis is great.

It's really great for shooting environments where you know overheating won't be an issue.

Update. So I recorded 35 minutes of 4k 30 on the r6. With a few breaks during. The camera said I had 5 minutes left. I let turned it off for 10 minutes and it said I has 25 minutes of recording. Firmware 1.52

I got the R6 a couple months ago and I got to shoot a Spec Ad on my channel and I only shot it in 1080p and just exported it in 4k and man the Quality was amazing, this will definitely be my main shooter for a while...unless yea I get the R5C lol.

or change professions or buy a canon video camera, such as the Canon R5C or the cinema part of Canon. If you are a video creator, then you are buying video cameras and not a photo camera with video. We all already know what you listed. Buy a stronger computer and you will edit faster, it's not the codec's fault

Did you try to shoot 4k60 video in crop mode with 0.71 speed booster? I think that will solve the overheating problem, and the crop will only be 1.13 times.

Good stuff- I have two R6 bodies I use for wedding videography. I shoot long form stuff in 4k24, no overheating issues whatsoever. 4K60 for shots I’d like to slow down. From my personal use I have absolutely loved this camera, but I can see how it could be a little troublesome depending on how you shoot. I will say I haven’t seen any limitation with 4K24 as I have shot ceremonies in excess of one hour in duration without any overheating

I agree and honestly i shoot in 1080p and just upscale to 4k in post. The 1080p on this camera holds its own.

I am really sorry for you although I fully blame it on yourself. I own R6 but I use mostly for photography along with my 5D mk3. For video I use my 5D mk4 and 90D. They both can do 4K 30fps I only R6 as video camera when I need 60fps on 4K. I advise you to use R6 alonside a more potent video camera. R6 is not be a full video production cameraas you already know. I agrre with you on battery life I hate miroless battery life in general, That is why I am still keeping my DSLRs for now. As a hybrid shooter I don't wat to spend time worring about batteries.

I still use 1080 for video, much smaller file sizes for editing and it’s so good I don’t see a need to go 4K. Never overheated on that res so suits me fine. I never shoot long clips, keep it short, keep it keen.

The RF vs EF Mount has nothing to do with the sensor. It is because the distance from the lens and the sensor changed when they removed the mirror from DSLR’s to make the mirror less camera. Therefore, the lenses have to be different to correctly function and produce an image

Honestly, you shouldn't be in this business if this is how you plan to operate (not much gear, doing things on the cheap, not understanding your gear, not properly using you gear, and complaining about it afterwards). Here is what I heard: "I don't have a second camera. I don't have extra batteries. I chose mirrorless but I can't afford the lenses so I don't have RF lenses. I don't have software that can edit my format. etc, etc, etc. All excuses. When I'm shooting a studio work or a wedding, I have three camera, 8 lenses, batteries glore, wireless setups, iPads, lights, stands, etc. Cheap doesn't cut.

    • @BrianKissig
      @BrianKissig  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Thank you for the feedback. I do have plenty of cameras, lenses, batteries, etc. My editing software and hardware is industry standard. I have been in the business for 10+ years and I certainly know my way around it. I have worked for many big name companies who have all been very happy with my work. This video is just about the R6 itself and how I personally was disappointed with it and informing people on what to look out for when buying it. I am glad you have established a set up that works for you.

I just stumbled onto this. The new 1.6 firmware takes care of some of the issues but overheating seems to be an issue with most camera brands at this level. A bit more research wouldn't have gone astray as it was obvious to all and sundry that the R6 would overheat under certain conditions. Canon made no apologies for this. As it stands that Sony A7sIV overheats as well. The current software for the R5 has, supposedly, taken the overheating issues away but this is yet to be ported to the R6, if indeed it is possible or viable for Canon.

MP4 is an awful choice for recording video and edit after... MP4 is a final format, premiere or any other editing software suffer when they have to work with compressed files. That's why is better to work with intermediate files such as .mov or uncompressed such as raw.

Simply Use 4k crop mode !
Many cameras in market cropped videos so no heating issue .
If you want back to full frame vocal length use EF lens with viltrox speed booster ef r3 , in crop mode again .

I love my R6 I get outstanding results. I have overheated 🥵during a wedding. I have an EOS R body as my backup. I also use a 90D. I understand the R6 limits. I have been making it with the cheaper non L rf glass. I can’t complain about the results. However I feel your concerns about overheating. I live in Florida. It is a real thing to manage. At $2500 the R6 is good value. I would be less happy about the value proposition of the R5 at $3500.

I usually film in eco mode, which surely has downsides but it has made my battery life significantly longer. And worst case you can turn cLog off and shoot in H264, which for many situations is probably enough and it seems easier for the camera (but I never really pushed it to the limit there...).I feel like H265 light is also making things a bit easier and I don't see that much difference. But yeah, although I never had overheating issues myself so far, I'm not surprised it can be an issue for wedding videos. Other than that, I feel like there are enough cheaper RF options out there for filming, like the RF 35, RF85 F2 (or the Rokinon version), RF16 2.8 and so on. But yeah, it's definitely not the ideal camera for every purpose when it comes to filming.

I do not wan't to be rude, but it all has solutions - 1) get more batteries (and do not buy the R5C if batteries worries you) 2) get better computer (files from R6 on M1 max computer are without any problems 3) RF lenses is NOT a must, I use EF adaptor and I love the build-in ND filter and maybe take a look at Sony lenses - the prices are off 4) do not record simultaneously on both SD cards and there should be no overheating... Have a great day.

Well the time limitations on video were clearly stated by Canon Representatives on line the day the camera was announced. Yet people claim they were surprised. Rudy Winston Canon USA’s main PR man practicality shouted it from the rooftops. You need to read the camera companies information and not listen to the online talking heads.

Then it won’t be a problem for editing

    • @BrianKissig

Don't think there's an option for that. I love the 10 bit though. I am huge on working with color. I do have a B-cam that shoots 8 bit so that covers my needs for that.

Damn.. Great timing on the video.. Thank you for making it.
Can I take a minute of your time to get your opinion?
I was gonna buy r5 but, in the end, I figure the HDD spade, cf express price, and finally the file codec is the huge barrier to me. I'm just a hobbyists and 60/40 in favor for the still photography vs video, but it seems like these limitation on the r5 gonna force me to spend thousands of $$ to be able to get its maximum specs. Something that I don't wish to do.
If the r5 4k is better than the r6, the story might be different. Why not get the r6? Well, because I like to crop in my shots a lot, and thus sony a7iv is a better choice for me in terms of still photography Megapixel.
Sony a7iv vs canon r5 though, r5 edges it out for me. It's just those hidden cost to extract the full potential of the r5 is the killer. I don't know what I should do.. I wish I don't have limited budget.
My budget only allow me to get either:
    A. Sony a7IV with Tamron 28-70 f2.8 + gimbal Weebil S + 85mm f1.8 sony fe
    B. Canon r5 + 50mm rf + 16mm rf.
    Any input please?
    Thank you

    • @BrianKissig
      @BrianKissig  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Good question, if you are a hobbyist I would suggest getting the sony since you'll have more budget for lenses and a gimbal which will allow you to do a larger range of work to potentially build your portfolio. You'll get great shots with it and be able to crop a lot with it. I know plenty of people who shoot with similar cameras and love it.
