  • This is the update on finding a new meat breed to take over for the Jumbo Cornish Cross Broilers. We are overwhelmingly impressed with the hardiness and growth of the Rudd Rangers as a competitive option for the Backyard Homestead.

We ended up trying the red rangers as well due to the Cornish being so gross to process and how many you loose no matter how hard you try. We absolutely love the red rangers and harvest ours between 12-15 weeks, we usually the hens go a bit longer and get some weight. We even kept one that was particularly friendly. She is now one of our big layer to this day and is larger than a Cornish but has no problem roosting. Loved the quail joke also!

That’s awesome! We will be doing another run of Rangers at the end of summer and letting them go 12-14 weeks this time. Glad you liked the quail joke. I thought it was funny. Lol

I found leg problems also when I raised the Cornish Cross.

Yeah it just gets so frustrating when it happens.

I prefer the Cornish X for meat. The meat is more tender, you don’t have to raise them as long, they raise well in a chicken tractor. I take their food away around 8pm then the next morning I feed them around 7 or 8am. That seems to help with the overweight and health issues for me.

We have done them in the past and had health issues from the hatchery, but I might do another run of them this year as a comparison

No, because they must be bought from a hatchery, so not the best for self-sufficiency.
