I keep one chicken and that's a Rhode Island Red. No need to mess around with two breeds for me. I have my layer's and my meat birds. Raise my chicks and keep about 50 birds for my meat birds for a year's worth in the lay down freezer. Every three years I rotate my layer's and turn them into stew birds and dog food. Every year I add 10 new chicks to the layer and keep a rotation going. Nice video and thanks for sharing.

If you keep 3 different groups of hens, and only 3 roosters, and move the roosters from hen group to hen group each year, you don't have to bring any new blood into your flock, just keep the hens within the group they were born in, and rotate the roosters (3 roosters only) on each breeding cycle.

Very informative, I like the 'taste' info you added. In the 70's my folks raised plymouth rocks, I was not fond of them as a kid, moody birds. Many years til I started my own flock again. Glad I added Buffs last year as dual purpose, just waiting for one to go broody this year. I have wyandottes, but love those fat buffs just based on looks!
I have done cornish the last 3 years. Learned not to do them in summer the first yr. I raise 16-24 as early as I can get them in Spring. They taste better when not heat stressed. I can keep them warm on chilly days, but they get too hot too fast in summer. We start processing the biggest 4 at 6 weeks, then 4-6 every week after, and haven't had a 'dry' one the last 2 yrs. Loaded in fat and no health problems, not over fed, organic feed only. Fresh lawn , tractors moved twice a day.
Tried 6 slow grow whites last year, not impressed, dry and a bit tough.
Currently raising 16 rangers and a week later added 16 cornish. 2 whole birds left in freezer from last year so need the cornish to be ready first. Rangers a bit sweeter?, I hope so. Will find out in 8weeks. But I have no complaints about my cornish, and neither did anyone else we gifted one to. 'So much more flavor than store bought', best compliment I get.

Interesting point coming from someone who has loads of experience in processing chickens. Which hens do you like to process in the summer where the heat doesn't affect the flavor? We currently live in a SUPER HOT and HUMID climate 8-9 months out of the year.

Try giving them fermented scratch the two weeks before you butcher. Amazing.

Please tell me more about the Delaware. I've been looking for information from people who raise them. How do they taste when cooked in oven like a store bought chicken? Are they tough?

It's been 7 months since my last request for a video on the Bielefelder chicken. Had several thumbs up to my post and a positive comment yet still no video on them. They are beautiful birds, lay a large brown egg, hens and roosters are gentle and non-aggressive. They're also an autosexing breed so you know at hatch whether it's a male or female. A shame this channel won't give the breed the recognition it deserves.

We have too many roosters. One of them is very mean so he is about to get into the stew pot. He's a Wyandotte. He is huge compared to the other Wyandotte I have. Glad to know he's dual purpose. He is a year old so I assume it's the stew pot or slow cooker for him rather than roasting or frying.

You could debone, part out. I hammer out chunks for my sons homemade chicken nuggets. I prefer to process them by 6 months.
Had some young mean Roos we had to process at 3 months. They were ganging up on my Royal palm turkey poult.
Them were some tender birds. , no not much meat, but when your doing 5 or 6 in one go.
I skin, keep tails, wings head and feet for crafts. Age for 3 days, then debone or part out. Grilled, fried, baked.
My 7 yr old is raising silkies to eat. We raise em all like pets, depending on your personality, you stay a pet or become dinner.
Very tame, so when the time comes. They are very relaxed in my hand. No stress hormone entering the meat.
We have lots of love and respect for our birds. They been great for my homeschooler.

I've eaten Australorp, Buff Roosters, and Cornish Crosses that we raised. The CC meat was amazing but the heritage birds had a great flavor. Next up- Freedom Rangers, White Rangers and New Hampshire.

I’m breeding fibro crosses and silkies to eat. My 7 yr olds idea. I have a AC roo, pumping out beautiful black birds.
Got some Brahma and jersey giants. Our polish tasted delicious. We process 6 months max. 4 to 5 months is perfect. .
Had some mean roosters, 16 weeks old. They were very tender. I let age in fridge for 3 days. We skin, instead of pluck. I keeps the tails, wings and feet for crafts. We do European mounts with the heads and wings. Guinea fowl are delicious, we raise turkeys to eat and pets. Have a Royal palm house turkey, hatched with silkies. And peacocks, we haven’t ate any of them yet.

Nice video.. An important distinction is that the Cornish cross can not be bred. Many people wishing to raise meat birds need to realize this. I have the American Bresse.

I wanted to see if the internet myth was true, and it is not. The Cornish Cross chickens can be bred and they breed true, it is just a bit more work than with regular chickens, because you have to control their diet or they will simply die before reaching maturity, and once they are adults, the females don't lay too many eggs.

    • @MsMuffetsTuffet
      @MsMuffetsTuffet 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

Not true at all! I have a few chicks I hatched out from Cornish cross, and they are the same as the parents. However, the hens do not lay very well and the rooster does have a hard time mounting the hens. They can breed though.
I have a few American Bresse chickens which are awesome meat birds. I will try crossing the Cornish and Bresse.
