So. Do research, while doing research and development.

Not sure I agree with the premise being given. In my field there are a lot of grants and other funding that can alleviate the risk of R&D, and I help facilitate those. Because the fact is, if you are not willing to fail, then you will never succeed either.
Ugggh...of course you have that view about external R&D, because there are few technologies being created for pharmaceutical companies that are being made by garage shop geniuses.
Whatever dude...
TED has gone to worthless every since they started letting anyone talk, including this one.
