Candela Obscura is an ongoing monthly horror drama that follows an esoteric order of investigators as they use centuries of knowledge to fight back against a mysterious source of corruption and bleed. Leveraging gaming as a story mechanic, the series features the Candela Obscura tabletop roleplaying game from Darrington Press, which is built on the Illuminated Worlds system.
This first chapter of Candela Obscura will be 3 stand-alone episodes starring Robbie Daymond, Laura Bailey, Anjali Bhimani, and Ashley Johnson with a story led by Matthew Mercer.
The show will continue on the last Thursday of each month.

When I saw Robbie at ColossalCon in June, he told me that this episode was his favorite experience in a TTRPG. I now understand why.
I wonder if that will ever come back to haunt him xD
Laura's peculiarity with Arlo is so spectacular, her pattern of speech is just so wondrous and airy. I know I shouldn't be surprised given who she is but she always blows me away.
I also love how unwaveringly confident Anjali plays Charlotte, never second-guessing her decisions.
There aren't enough words for how well Ashley plays Auggie, her physicality, the way she really brings how green he is to life, it's all so good.
And Robbie plays the pretentious scholarly type so fucking well. Like he just has all this knowledge off the top of his head that he presents effortlessly.
Needless to say this cast is just stellar.
The "are either of you two averse to violence" line almost killed me.
And the way they always present him as a doctor to everyone who is injured and he specifies "PhD"
Robbie is literally the best guest CR has ever had! He should outright be a regular cast member!!

Robbie is so unhinged this episode and I'm fuckin living for it, I was crying laughing when he was setting up that punch 😂
I mean he did introduce himself with his real name and title after Anjali had introduced her character too before doing what he did. My jaw dropped at how much of a bonehead he was being.
Also, the trepan scene was wild. Robbie heard "Horror RPG" and ate it all.

Is it just me, or are the costumes just so on point. I believe the dress-up and set design just really helps with cast and audience immersion in the story.
I love historical fashion and they are actually pretty accurate to the late Victorian / early Edwardian period, especially when you add a little fantasy flair.
reminds me a lot of undeadwood, just like with the unique set design and level of detail in it. candela's definitely a step in the right direction compared to that though.

Costumes really do help. I've developed a habit of using certain items or Clothes for individual Pen and Paper Characters. Not full costumes but things like a fan and earrings for a noble lady or a strict braid for a military commander.

Yeah maybe because they are 4 instead of the usual (bit crowdy) 6, they are all much mobile physical. Loved Matthew standing with one hand up and gently swinging for like 5 minutes during the cop-in-the-metro scene

He leans into this genre so well. Phenomenal scenes for his character that just raises more questions and makes things more weird.

the acting is incredible especially Laura playing this aloof and constantly slightly out of it person is amazing, what she is able to convey just with her word, the choice, the tone, the pause is more than a lot of actors try to convey will full body investment. Robbies portrayal of the snobby doc delightful to watch! ahh... love this show. i hope it keeps running.

Auggie and Arlo are so sweet. I love this series and I love all of these characters. Robbie killed it this episode in my opinion. I am so sad to see them leave us so soon but also very giddy to meet a new circle with new characters and new abilities. Just wish we could come back to these again and make this a regular show, too. The atmosphere is everything!

@@sharlinespinal3287 Colm McGuinness. While he has done some orchestral arrangements like this and Welcome to Wildmount from C2, he also does a lot of trad Irish tunes, as well as sea shanties and some other covers. He plays a shit ton of instruments and has an amazing vocal range.
It never fails that one of the cast members notices and oogles in awe at the simple, but magnificent noises Matt is capable of. Ashley just geeking out over the Periphery officer taking a note on his notepad from Charlotte. If you weren't looking, you'd assume it was just one of them writing in their own physical notebooks, but nope, it's just Matt 😂
Look up the short of Liam reacting to Matt's wine bottle pop sound effect. He loses his mind and it has me in tears every time I see it.

This episode made me cry. I am so proud of the CR family for tackling topics like houselessness, veteran care, sex worker rights, etc with such kindness and grace. Matt is doing such a good job reinforcing that shelterless people are still *people*.

@@bronandsimoneI mean, consider the context. "Crazy eyes" or "wild eyes" wouldn't be derogatory, it would be rather apt. A natural part of the _very_ human fight-or-flight reaction to what they had just seen and experienced - and the enduring fear, confusion and disbelief that sets in as adrenaline recedes and gives way to shock. Mercer went in a somewhat different direction with it, but the alternative wouldn't speak any lesser of the person.
God I love Laura's character in this, so cute and almost lost at the same time. An admirable trope for sure. Don't really even know how to explain it but she's amazing.

i’m SO sad we might be saying goodbye to this circle soon because everyone here is so wonderful and i’m so invested but i’d be lying if i said that i wasn’t also INCREDIBLY hyped to see if we get a new cast and/or new characters soon! either way, more candela is always worth it

All of these guys, cast and crew completely, are wonderful. I've enjoyed so many moments over the years. That said, it's somehow even more special to see Ms. Johnson being able to enjoy herself and have fun with friends and people who love her. Man this group of people (all cast, crew, and guests) is awesome!
So Howard decided to have an open mind and to let new ideas in. *shudder*
What's that saying about how it's important to keep an open mind, but not so open that your brains leak out? Or so open that you let mysterious spirits in. Howard is 0 for 2 in this episode.

I love the roleplay here and the attention to detail. I love how they explain their refreshes at the end. and how every action has conseqeunces. Robbie said it best. Also Robbie is the best ever! As is Laura!
Robbie and Ashley's acting crack me up 😂 they are so good at being immersed in their characters even when the rest of the group looks at them like "dont do that." Laura too for that matter. The whole "you should cut your hand off" exchange with Robbie was hilarious.
Edit: Holy crap Matthew Mercer! That line: "It's the challenge with sacrifice. Sometimes you don't get to see the good you've done. You just have to assume." Right in the feels.
It is SOOOO easy to forget Robbie had never done roleplay before EXU! The most exciting part of Campaign 3 early on was watching him grow as a player and find his voice in this group of veterans. I really hope there is a campaign reunion for EXU and as an added bonus Aimee plays both Opal and Deni$e ala Travis playing Grog and Bell.}

The music, the acting, the environment, the story-telling, the horror... it's all an absolute fucking chef's kiss and I'm so in love with Candela. It's a plus for me, being a long-time Lovecraftian horror fan but I gotta give credit to Laura, Robbie, Anjali, Ashley and Matt for the amazing performance in those 2 episodes. Can't wait to see more!!!!
Jesus Christ Robbie... I hope you watched the replay of your scar monolog. The shock and horror from the girls and the pure face of enjoyment from Matthew were amazing. That was pure, unadulterated horrific brilliance.
The amount of detail and effort that goes into everything you create and do is just astonishing.

I may be playing favorites by saying this, but the moment where Howard (Robbie) decided to punch the cop in the face was the funniest moment to happen in this series so far. This series is definitely getting interesting so far and I am all here for it! Much love to the players and the creative team behind Candela Obscura. I can't wait to see what happens next!

I love how Auggie went from being totally annoyed with Howard in episode 1, to having total respect for him in this episode, especially after that punch.
Arlo is a delight. "Oh yes we are Quite betrothed" what a completely trustworthy way to word that.

It was raining here so I popped the shops bought some big Yorkshire puddings, some fresh sausages and lashings of thick beef gravy. I was inspired. And it was yummy!

So this system is very particular in how a scene plays out. It throws these chaotic moments at you which, similar to real life, force you to make spur of the moment choices that can cause you to lose sight of other things going on. Combined with Matt's ability to weave a story it gives a some really intense experiences.
I fell in love with the turn-of-the-century Lovecraftian genre after watching a playthrough of the Sinking City a few years ago, and this series is EVERYTHING

I finally got to finish the episode tonight. I'm in tears. Charlotte's sadness really grabbed me. This was a a wonderful story.

Arlo is like Luna lovegood. Love the dynamic of everyone yes and ing the roleplay. We’ve had characters forget their own names and it just makes the narrative richer.
"Oh yes, we are quite betrothed." Considering what we later learn about Arlo, I'm gasping. I mean, I was dying during the moment of because the contrast was great, but being able to sneak the backstories before hand, I also get this sense of, "Auggie, noooo!"
I am just shocked at how few views this has been getting. I mean... ngl I actually like this more than the main campaign, most likely because I am kinda sick of D&D itself and I also love 1800s aesthetic... But even outside of that, this is just so good.
Have been watching 2 D&D campaigns and definitely agree that this is such an welcome new board game . I think most people watch Critical Role for D&D , i used to watch some clips of their campaign , but it was Candela Obscura that made me finally subscribe and start watching this full campaign . No interest in watching the current D&D campaign so i will watch Candela Obscura until the end and hope they are able to do that thing they are trying to do which is start the fanatsy settings campaigns with their own gameplay format instead of D&D

This might be my favorite episode of any campaign so far. Looked like you guys were having a blast.
Y'know, it feels weird. This campaign and setting feels like a brainchild of Taliesin's for certain, and he even did the intro for it wonderfully, but otherwise he's not apparently involved at all. When they announced this I was really hoping for a second go of the Crystal Palace (I could be remembering the name wrong and I'm too lazy to go check, sorry). Taelsin is the first chapter Lightkeeper for the intro because for the circle is Alexandria. Next circle Taelsin might be GM or a player who knows

Robbie's character is very much giving victorian incredible hulk (the phd not md joke especially) mixed with dr jekyll and mr hyde
Slightly unhinged Dr with quite a bit of strength but socially awkward, and then into his even more unhinged transformation? Absolutely perfect. I was stoned as hell during the livestream of this and that transformation was insane
What an absolutely AMAZING episode. I'm now champing at the bit for the final episode of Arc #1 at the end of July... and I'm already DYING to know who's going to GM and play for Arc #2! (Does anyone know if they've already announced if they're gonna jump straight into Arc #2 for the last Thursday in August, or if they're taking a quick break?)
I love how often someone says “let him see it, he’s a doctor” and he consistently interjects “phd.” Then goes on to pretend like he’s an md anyway. It’s a fun schtick!

I know this is nt doing as well as freaking D&D , i love D&D but this is something refreshing and new and i hope it does well enough for them to continue Candela Obscura and do more than the already planned chapters .
