Servicing of Starter on A320 CFM56-5B

- CFM56-5B starting system break down ... I tried to keep is simple and short, but let me know if you want more details
The starting system of the engine utilizes pressurized air to drive a turbine at high speed. This turbine applies a torque to the engine high pressure rotor system through a reduction gear in the (starter) turbine and through the engine accessory drive system.
The air which is necessary to drive the starter comes from :
the APU,
or the second engine,
or a ground power unit.
The starter air supply is controlled by a starter shutoff valve (SOV) pneumatically operated and electrically controlled. The SOV has a manual override capability which permits the valve to be opened or closed in case of failure of the electrical control.
The starter shutoff valve closes when the N2 speed reaches 50 percent.
The starter centrifugal clutch disengages when N2 speed is higher than 50 percent.
Engine starting is controlled from the ENG start panel 115VU located on center pedestal and ENG/MAN START switch on the overhead panel.
The starting sequence may be interrupted at any time by placing the MASTER control lever in OFF position which overrides the FADEC. When the MASTER control lever is in OFF position the HP fuel shutoff valve is closed and the engine is stopped.
Thank you all for being here and watching and supporting.

finally someone who actually knows how starter works with sprag clutch! I suggest you make video about sprag clutch for educational purpose!
I already made a video about starting the system where I tried to explain it in detail.🙂
I’m only an aviation enthusiast, but I like to know how the things work. Finally, I know how a manual start is don’t. Great video. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it! Thank you for stopping by 🙂
I’m in A-Check so I work on Starter, IDG, Fuel Filters, VBV, HP, IP, Engine wash and many other tasks AF&PP side and I find your videos are very useful and informative. Also I like how you keep it professional and top notch job. Don’t worry about the idiots who thinks you are over engineering simple tasks. This job is very crucial and critical , keep it professional just the way you do! Well done! I would love to see more videos like these.
Cheers mate, be safe out there!
Shoutout to Stig 😁
I work with aircraft maintenance in brazil i really enjoy and learn a lot of things from your videos
Thanks for the great content
keep it up
Always a pleasure to follow you. Cheers from Oslo airport (OSL)
I replaced a starter on a BMW the other day, this is much more robust. Very nice, thanks. Sve najbolje. 🛩️✈️🛫
I guess access is also harder😄 The aircraft engine is much bigger so you need more powerful starter🙂
Always amazing and very well explained Zeto
Glad you think so!
❤ Thank you for this good presentation!
Very interesting. Thanks for sharing.
Glad you enjoyed it
Perfektne videa! Velmi zaujimave :)
Ďakujem, som rád za každého domáceho sledujuceho 🙂
Hi, I come from the Stig Shift-channel.
Hello, and welcome🙂 hopefully you will enjoy my work
Great videos!
Thanks
Glad you like them!
great content! Glad I found your channel......
I was surprised that the bayonet fittings on the various plugs are considered to be adequately secure on their own. Instinctively I would have expected them to be at least wired closed to prevent them vibrating out or being loosened accidentally. As I understand it, 'belt and braces' is the way things are done on aircraft.
Awesome video, as always! Is a dry run needed after this procedure?
great video
If and when possible, I'd like very much a video about the starter valve. From what I understand it uses the air pressure from its own upper pipe to do the mechanical work to open itself, must be very clever.

Take a look at these 2 videos and you will understand everything 🙂
Exxxxxxelent!!!!!
Tks a lot!
Very nice
Thank you
Thanks for your great work.
Where does the air from the duct actually exits the starter behind the turbine/gear unit?
❤ nice
Just watched the latest Stig Aviation video and he gave you a big plus mention. I messaged him to say you guys need to do a joint TH-cam video (s) in the near future 😊
Thanks brooo
Welcome
How often is the starter serviced?
Nice work
thank you
Could you please make a video how you can deactivate the CFM56-5B HP VLV and FCU WHEN PACK INOP
Nice. Who is the manufacturer of the air turbine starter?
WHAT KIND OF METALS USING IN AIRCRAFT ENGINE AND WHAT TYPE OF OIL USED
Will you make the video on how to change oil filter in A320 fitted with PW1100G Engine
I just kicked out one for fuel filter
thanks my rigs will be happy now
Dzive video
Ďakujem 😁
🎉
Did u always want to be an aircraft engineer and if u had to do it all over again would u still choose this career?
And also where do you see yourself in 10 yrs ie management role or doing what your doing and learning everyday?
For sure I will remain where I am I love my job and I don't want to change it🙂
@zeto.r perfect answer 👌
Thanks 🤣
Waiting videos how to use srm😊
well this is very hard subject. for that I will gone need to ask permition from Airbus to show documentation, bcs it is confidential.
How do Engineers manually open the starter value for engine start is start valve doesn’t open?
By using 3/8 speedhandle while engine start
Do you need A&P to work on these in other countries?
In Europe you need EASA licence FAA A&P licence you need in the US
@@zeto.r what if youre in europe but have an A&P. is it convertible?
@_Avser no you must get EASA license
Question. At 50%+ N2 rpm isn't the running engine now driving the starter through the centrifugal clutch so I'm wondering how does the centrifugal clutch disengage from the engine N2 turning at 50%+ even after the FADEC/EEC has commanded the air start valve closed.
I expand it also here th-cam.com/video/JvGCooPPpF0/w-d-xo.html but you need to understand how centrifugal clutch works. Lemme know if you need more info
@@zeto.r Ok thanks, I'm familiar with a Sprag clutch which relies on drive direction for engagement/disengagement. The video isn't exactly clear in detail how the centrifugal clutch engagement/disengagement is accomplished.
Once I have a chance to record it I can kick out a video about it 🙂
@@zeto.r That would be great. I found this explanation on an air starter utilizing a Sprag type clutch. The Sprags engage being driven in one direction and disengage being driven in the other. th-cam.com/video/8QwXNPB4Frs/w-d-xo.htmlsi=1jd0FYQGXZib2nTq
Cool
thanks bro I was able to DIY all my rigs.... now back to the skies
Interesting vid. Try not to look at the camera with the headtorch on!
Thank you and also thank you for input. I will try next time
What is the target of this video on you tube? You try to say that every body can do this exercice? , its dangerous and should be prohibited!
It is to show people how we care about aircrafts and how systems work. What is dangerous about it? That people will know how to service the starter? Man wake up, you can you can download simulators where you can operate aircraft. If you don't like it, don't watch it!
