You need to watch his back up vocalists and himself do the cover song of Led Zeppelin, Black Dog as a warm up before a concert. Amazing 🤩

Not hiding his voice at all, telling the story of the song and building it up as he does. He is a legend.

Exactly.......the singer is feeling the story of crushed love.....so muted vocals are necessary.
We have all experienced that moment when the love of our life tells us they hate us, and orders us out of THEIR house that we paid for. lol
As men we either explode with rage, or die inside and often fall apart.

You're talking about two different times, nearly 20 years apart. The "Mullet" times was the 80s & early 90s. This performance is from 2003, when he is 54. And what is incredible is that he still had that voice into his seventies, his last public performance was just before COVID shut the country down. John announced he is "cancer free" in September 2023..it wasn't his throat, it was mouth cancer (thankfully his vocal cords were not affected), but they did have to remove jaw bone and reconstructed it from rib bone. John is currently 74, and although now singing around the house, whether he returns to the stage or not, is soley his decision (according to his son Robert).💞 We, of course, hope he does.

Such a phenomenal vocal display right there. That’s why we call him the voice, John is just so perfect. Can you please react to Cold Chisel “when the war is over” live Ringside 2003.

For me, this is John's best version of this song. From as you say, his voice, the piano and the backing vocals but also the drums are awesome and of course THAT guitar. Great reaction mate, g'day from Australia.

The emotion was deeper because John was in a maturer phase of his life here (aged 54) and aiming at slowing down his schedule aka retiring. We all joked about John doing another “last” tour because as soon as there was a friend in need, or a national crisis he would headline a benefit to raise money for bush fire victims, drought ravaged farmers etc … but this concert was a heartfelt thank you to his audience and a “sort of” goodbye to full time touring. We love John because he is just an incredibly talented, humble, kind, decent human being. I met him backstage at the Melbourne Town Hall back in the 1960’s when he was about 18 and thought he was a lovely generous talented young man.

FYI... It wasn't throat cancer, John underwent surgery in August 2022 which removed part of his jaw to cut out a cancerous tumour from his mouth. - 12-hour surgery plus some weeks (months?) in intensive care... he was a heavy smoker for many years - cigarettes and cigars, - by all reports, he is doing well now, - singing around the house,

Aren't we Australians bloody lucky? You have just discovered this vocal genius, and we have been listening to him for over 50 years. Just spoiled, I guess.

He didn't hide his voice, he's a brilliant storyteller. Loved your reaction. When you were saying that about his mullet and his singing I was really looking forward to watching your reaction after that first growl and you didn't let me down. ❤

When you said that his voice wasn't there at the beginning of the song, I was ready to throw a tanty, then I thought, just wait another 30 seconds then you will see. 😂😂 and if course you did 😅
If you watch other performances he does of this song, during the long hair days you'll see that he sings it exactly the same way. starts off mellow then takes off into the stratosphere.
The long hair days he was in his 30's and this performance he is 54...and personally i think this was the best of the best.
The cancer was just a couple of years ago in his 70's. It was in his mouth and they had to remove and reconstruct part of his jaw. He hasn't sung publicly since and i doubt he ever will. But his family has let us know that he can still sing.
It's so cruel and unfair that someone with such talent for singing and entertaining should be struck in the mouth by cancer to end his career😢❤

This was a phenomenal performance … live … from John and his band. From start to finish he sang the lyrics with great emotion. Notes don’t have to be high or hard - it’s about signing the story, and John does it brilliantly, but that 3rd verse is out of this world. He was 54 at the time and FYI - John has been singing like this since the 1960s.

This is by far the best version of this epic song. Even though John is a bit older here and after all the tears of the high belting he does his voice is still pristine. The passion and emotion he puts into this is amazing, you can’t help but to feel it way down in your soul. John is just so great, over 50 years of performing from this Aussie legend.

This is not with the MSO (Melb Symphony Orchestra). John is a lot older here, about 54. Singing better than ever. What a legend.❤

i get what you're saying - you prefer his voice with the long hair ie when he was much younger. However I'd listen to this whole song first, and maybe even a few more of his "short hair" songs before making your final judgement (as you clearly realised later that maybe you judged too soon). You could also go back even further than the LONG HAIR John you liked (1980s) and you'll find another John with short hair in the 1970s - for example Bridge over Troubled Water, Long Tall Sally etc. There are so many versions of John and all of them are phenomenal. Hope you have a look at some really early John !!

Right ✅️ He is a national treasure, no matter what decade....from the 1960s onwards.
By the way, it'd be criminal of me not to suggest listening to the original band behind this cracker of a song, Cold Chisel sing this live in 2003, at their Ringside concert. Do yourself a favour and check it out.
To help with Australian pronunciation of Melbourne, it is not said as Mel-born, but more like Mel-bin or Melb'n. There is no pressure but all Australians will notice 🇦🇺🇦🇺
      Loving your journey

John’s tumour was actually in his mouth. He found out about it a couple of weeks after his longtime friend Olivia Newton John passed away in 2022. He’s now beaten it and taking a well earned rest after work for over 50 years.

Signing the song in a totally different tempo that's the genius of the man . If he went out there and sang every song the same everybody would say why does he sing the same every time .

John does sing this song with his long hair when he was younger with Jimmy Barnes.
    Type it in ytube:

Can anyone name a singer in their mid-fifties who can sing this well? He was still singing in his seventies until mouth cancer stopped his career.

There's no hiding of the voice John uses vocal "shade & light" for the emotional story in the song. Many great singers do this 🤷🏻‍♀️
It might help if you Google the meaning behind the lyrics.
