    I use this recipe for my bath salts. I use natural seat salt in my laundry cleaning recipe. Just use vinegar in your rinse cycle if you don’t use a dryer or make the dryer sheets she makes if you use a dryer.

    This recipe sounds amazing so I decided to give it a go. I have used it a few times and I agree it does make my laundry softer but not really scented. I then researched the benefits of epsom salt and it turns out Epsom salt is magnesium sulphate which makes hard water even harder creating more soap scums.
    Knowing this fact I’m feeling a little reluctant to continue using this recipe to avoid damaging my expensive washing machine.
    Has anyone experienced any issues with their machine after using this recipe for a long time?

    • @suzanneriding3237
      @suzanneriding3237 3 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      You're correct epsom salt will make your water hard due to the magnesium ions. I recommend using citric acid, baking soda, and kosher salt (or any coarse table salt) in a 1:2:2 ratio and adding your preferred scent. The citric acid is a chelating agent, another name for water softener, baking soda will help buffer the excess acidity and it is a filler that can absorb added fragrance oil. The salt is another filler that doesn't have any water hardening ions. The salt is unnecessary but we probably want it in the mix since we want scented crystals as opposed to scented powder. I hope this helps! Cheers 😊

    • @suzanneriding3237
      @suzanneriding3237 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Also, if you want to clear hard water deposits and soap scum from your HE machine you can use citric acid, washing soda (sodium carbonate), and sodium percarbonate (oxiclean or similar oxygen cleanser) in a 1:2:1 ratio. Use about 1 cup of the mixture on your longest and highest temperature wash. So this would be 1/4 cup citric acid powder, 1/2 cup washing soda, and 1/4 cup oxy-booster powder. Add them straight into the washing machine drum. A little oxalic acid (barkeepers friend powder) would also be beneficial in this blend. If you read the ingredients on commercial washing machine cleaning tablets like Affresh this is basically the blend of chemicals they include. Affresh recommends cleaning your machine with a washing machine cleaning tablet once a month. You could include some tea tree oil (melaleuca oil) and/or lavender oil in the mix as well since they both have antiseptic and antifungal properties. Cheers!

      Also, you can use the scented epsom salt blend you've already made in the bath. Epsom salt is great for the skin in a bath! It's just bad for your laundry. Again, I hope this helps! Cheers 😊

    I am going to stick with just plain white vinegar and a few drops of lavender pure oil and a few drops of tea tree oil.
    I think too many ingredients causes too much build up in your machine which can cause damage to your machine and to your clothing and even your health.
    Many DIY laundry detergent which is mainly in dry ingredients don't really dissolve in water and just build up on your machine as well as your clothing.
    A personally rather use name brand liquid laundry detergent 1 tbsp to 2 tablespoons per load is more than you need to clean your clothing.
    And plain white vinegar with a few drops of your favorite pure essential oils is more than enough to soften your clothing.
    If you want to add some sent to your clothing just do it in the dryer with a wooly ball and some pure essential oils.
    One 8 oz glass spray bottle.
    2 tbsp of witch hazel.
    25 drops of lavender pure essential oil or whatever sent you would like.
    I do 20 drops of lavender and 5 drops of tea tree.
    It depends on how strong you want the smell of your laundry to be.
    Some distilled water mix it all together in a bowl use a funnel to fill your glass bottle.
    One or two wooly balls.
    Spray once or twice or more onto the wooly ball before placing it into the dryer with your clothing.
    The simple way is the easy way.
    And less is always more.
    And hand washing and hanging your clothes outside saves on energy.
    I believe that everyone should know how to hand wash their clothing as well as gather water for emergency purposes.
    Just in case your washing machine or your dryer breaks.
    And just in case the power goes out.
    It is hard work but someone has to do it.
    It is always nice to know how other people wash and dry their clothing.

    • @ouroilyhouse
      @ouroilyhouse  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You can but they aren't as healthy as essential oils. fragrances are highly toxic. Fragrances commonly contain phthalates, which are chemicals that help the scents last longer. This is the main reason I make my own laundry products, to avoid the fragrances.

Unfortunately not all of my family like essential oils - which can also be dangerous, if there isn’t enough education around it, therefore i’ve grown to learn that you can benefit from both. All natural doesn’t necessarily mean utterly safe. I use both.

      If you are wanting to make a blend simply to scent your laundry you could use kosher salt or any coarse table salt. I wouldn't recommend epsom salt since the magnesium ions will make your wash water hard (or harder if you already have hard water). You can scent the kosher salt alone or you could add some citric acid powder which acts as a chelating agent, another name for water softener. I would recommend 1 part citric acid powder to 3 parts kosher salt and then add your preferred fragrance oil. I hope this helps! Cheers 😊
