    I think that Carrie didn't think Aidan was the one because he wasn't good enough for her, in her head. Yes, he was wealthy compared to her, but he wasn't cocky enough like Mr Big. Aidan was a countryside dude at heart, he doesn't care about fashion or luxury or fancy restaurants etc. And of course she couldn't become the simple, marrying type girl Aidan was looking for. And that's why, in my opinion, kept MrBig near her as a "friend". He had all the features she craved in a man and she was waiting for him to change his mind about her.

    Need to point out one interesting observation, Big drives a Jag to Aden's country house! He usually gets chauffeured in a Lincon town car, which stands for typical American luxury. As a fashion-interested car guy, I would like to explain that despite the luxury, elegance, and performance, Jaguar sedans were often related to robbery and crime, having a perfect image of vicious getaway cars. It makes Big more villain-ish than ever.

    i think maybe saying that aidan is the worst is a bit of an exaggeration. Carrie did absolutely nothing to win his trust back after SHE convinced him to get back together. Being cheated on can make you paranoid and take a toll on your mental health and confidence(and lets add the fact that carrie is a gaslighter that will make you think that nothing she did is wrong and its a u problem). Im also pretty sure that her making him accept a "friendship" with the person she cheated with at least made him unintentionally compare himself to him which definetly didnt help built his confidence up. Thirdly i truly believed that he was in love with her and desperately wanted to believe she could change (when we are in love many times we are not seeing things realistically). This led to him putting up with behaviours which in other conditions probably would have not been accepted. What he did was surely not the right but when we are talking about betrayed partners its a more complicated issue than it appears and has a lot of layers that need to be examined.

    • @irinakl441
      @irinakl441 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Well, maybe not the worst, but surely isn't good. And not only for Carrie, but in general. Now, I'm not saying she was right, like you said, she messed him up really good. But just think of how clueless he was as to the woman he was dating! Right from the start he has these conditions, like he knew she was smoking, he is dating her anyway and then tells her how much he hates it and wants her to stop. Really? Why date her at all then? Just so he could gaslight her? Many stuff like this throughout his run in the show and the icing on the cake is the forest cabin. Now, don't get me wrong, this is my personal idea of a paradise, but for Carrie it is a torture. If you are dating someone and you care for them enough, you should know stuff like this. He didn't care enough. He just expected her to enjoy stuff he does, even if it makes her miserable. Like if my husband hates the movie theatre, I wouldn't buy tickets to a Lord Of The Rings marathone for our aniversary. But Aiden doesn't bother himself with stuff like this. He just expects everyone to automaticly go with his vibes. He takes it for granted

      @@irinakl441 the relationship only lasted for about a year and a half. At that point you still continue to learn your significant other. Many relationships end then because people realise things that bothered them since the begging just don’t change! The thing about smoking, even though I don’t remember everything since it has been some time since I watched the season, happened at the start of the relationship and yes surely was a miss on his part! The cabinet one maybe it’s not the ideal vacation but in relationships we sometimes do things that even though are not of our liking they are very important for our partner ( ESPECIALLY when she is trying to make her significant other trust her again since she cheated not even half a year into the relationship) and she brought her ex there..At the end of the day it was very obvious throughout the series that they weren’t a good much even though Aidan at least in theory was a much better guy than big.

      Yes but Charlotte never had to worry about money because of that financial family background plus bc of her marriage to someone from the same background. She is not better off financially because she worked harder or made more responsible financial decisions than Carrie. She quit her job without a plan B and can’t find a new one, she is also quite a luxurious spender - yet her decisions do not have the same impact because of her wealthy background. So in that regard she is privileged compared to Carrie who appears to have no financial backup from family.

    12:06 It was explained though, the apartment situation! Remember how Carrie had Miranda look over the legal aspects of the contract where Aiden was offering Carrie to buy the apartment?! We already knew they had started to join the two apartments, by smashing down the wall. There are a few options here, during a sale- put the wall up and sell it as one apartment or keep it open and sell it as a bigger apartment. We know the space was closed up again, because of filming later on in the apartment. Carrie probably also wouldn’t have been able to buy it back if Aiden had offered both apartments (so he probably closed it up and sold the added space that he had paid for already, and offered Carrie’s original space back to her as could be seen in a 20 seconds exchange between Miranda and Carrie).
    The show wasn’t about real estate in that sense, so this is something viewers have to understand themselves from that short exchange between Miranda and Carrie when she put on her lawyer hat to help put her friend for free, since Carrie didn’t understand if the offered deal was fair or if she lol was about to get scammed by Aiden.
    Carrie was dumb to allow Aiden in financially like that, by doing so she risked her entire home. She could have found another way to finance it when her apartment complex transformed and switched from a rental. People often talk down on feminism or try to make it about bodies, but feminism is about equality and women making an equal amount of money as men. This is one among many thing that puts women in a financially weaker position, and why men are able to buy out a woman when the relationship comes to an end. While the woman is all of the sudden facing a position where she is about to get homeless or needs to move to a much smalller rental. This is why the stay at home wife/mom arrangement doesn’t serve women at all. The argument that daycare is too expensive doesn’t cut it, then have things reformed instead of making women be in the same position as children with little to no income, so they are dependent on their men to get by. It’s also dangerous if the relationship turns into domestic abuse, where is she suppose to go with no budget or income. It’s a trap! The argument of ”each family has the right to decide”, then how come it’s a structural thing because there is no equality in the ration terms of stay at home dads/husbands and stay at home wife/mom.
    Charlotte was no better! She quit work when she married Trey, and it got her in trouble too! Him eventually signing over the apartment to her even though it was worth several milliions, that rarely happens and it’s still expensive for the woman. Ladies look out for yourselves and please teach your daughters to be financially independent and also teach your sons to not demand a woman to give up her autonomy for his sake, so he can make a career etc.

      Carrie would not have been able to find another way to finance the apartment without Aidan. I mean it’s not like she could have accepted money from Big if she was in relationship with Aidan and Charlotte would not have offered her ring if Carrie was still with Aidan and not so desperate.
      Carrie of course could have moved elsewhere and rented cheaply (although with lack of funds in her bank account she probably would also have needed to sell some of her designer clothes). But Carrie would not have done that unless she had no other options

    The writers did a good job, and Charlotte actually loved Trey even though she of course was worried about the sex thing. They worked on it, it got better, but then the baby thing happende. • @applepower5
    @applepower5 ปีที่แล้ว +21

    Thanks for the explanation of "following your heart"; it makes sense that Carrie feels resentment at following what felt right in her heart and is evicted as a result. Whereas Charlotte married rich and went along with a wedding despite her alarm bells ringing and gets "rewarded" with an apartment.
    But there is a difference: Charlotte was always rich (and an elitist) and would always have married rich. She never hid who she was and lived accordingly to her "old money" upbringing. It is irrational to resent her for that. Charlotte wouldn't have married a Steve, we even get an episode on this in S2. Carrie, OTOH, lived outside her means and lifestyle and she wouldn't have been in that desperate financial situation if she hadn't spent 40 K in shoes. Even her higher-earning pals don't even spend that money on fashion. Perhaps Samantha did, but she is a rich business owner who, as you pointed out, handled celebrities as her client accounts.
    Also, Charlotte quit her job to become a SAHM, convinced by her husband - who ditched parenthood and marriage at the last moment. It is not unusual that he would give her something in a divorce settlement to compensate for the income she lost, and for the time spent on a marriage and a family that would not exist anymore. Aidan dumped Carrie due to distrust but he OFFERED her to keep the ring and she refused it.
    So, yeah, good principle from the writers but it was executed poorly.

Carrie only wants the guys she cannot get, the ones she has to fight for (remember Berger?). Aidan forgave Carrie but Carrie never truly did anything to prove that she would not betray him again, but she was constantly acting annoyed every time he was not helplessly devoted to her (which I do not blame him, he was so nice and available to her when they first dated and she walked all over him, he probably is acting out as a way to protect his heart the second time). Aidan was not perfect, but Carrie certainly did not deserve him.. Aidan was certainly well off enough to buy two apartments, the cabin. have his furniture store and also invest on Steve’s bar.. he has money but lived comfortably but not flashy, Carrie spent her money recklessly on clothes and shoes and was BY far the less wealthy of the group.

    Charlotte is not responsible for parenting or being an adult so that Carrie doesn't have to sacrifice or budget. Carrie has to take care of herself and suffer the consequences of her own choices. Spending $40k on shoes means she doesn't have a down payment. She made that choice. Why should other people pay for her choices? She's an entitled spoiled child parentifying her friends. That's too much of a burden to place on any friendship. Grow up.

    Cigarettes with chocolate cake is the exception to the rule. It's pure and utter decadence.
    Also- of course Carrie didn't want a trendy laptop. Carrie followed fashion, not trends. It was more then a metaphor for her own unwillingness to let go of the past and embrace what most girls would want (Aidan/trendy laptop), it was evidence that Aidan would never really "get her", if he thought she wanted what 13 year old girls were told by the tv to want...

    The eviction notice was a dick move from Aiden.
    Carrie had lived in that apartment for years, he buys it so that she can be more secure. That's what he wants Carrie to believe.
    In actual fact he buys the apartment as leverage to punish Carrie if she ever does anything to hurt him.
    He hands her an eviction notice as a petty means of hurting her back; this is after Aiden rushes Carrie into a marriage so that he can feel some sense of security.
    In the second season of AJLT they make it out like it's all Carrie's fault for breaking the engagement, when in fact Aiden shouldn't have forced Carrie to marry him the first place.
    That is why I have issues with Aiden's return to AJLT, Carrie was at the mercy of Aiden. How is she the one fully at fault when Aiden LITERALLY ALMOST MADE HER HOMELESS??

    • @ladybug7273
      @ladybug7273 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +14

      That’s not the reason Aiden bought the apartment. He didn’t buy the apartment to punish Carrie “if” she ever hurt him. Carrie had already hurt Aiden by cheating on him with Big. Not to mention her bringing big around every chance she got. Aiden bought the apartment because they were engaged and thought they would get married. Plus Carrie told him the apartment was going co-op so the options were to buy shares in the corporation of apartments or buy it out right. Carrie didn’t have the money to buy her apartment but Aiden did. Either way Carrie would have had to fork out money for that apartment, and we all know Carrie didn’t have money. After the way Carrie treated Aiden, he had every right to sell her the apartment in a pure business manner with no emotions. Not to mention Aiden told Carrie to keep the engagement ring. She said no. She could have kept the ring for her down payment. Instead she runs to big and then gets upset with charlotte for not offering her the money.

    • @beenwk4194
      @beenwk4194 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@ladybug7273 Carrie did not want to get married, like I said it was used as a tactic to give Aiden some sense of security.
      Carrie didn't treat Aiden like anything the 2nd time around, she was fine.
      Aiden did the wrecking, Aiden did the guilting, Carrie and him were only seeing each other for a short period of time before getting engaged.
      Carrie was not given the time or space to get used to the idea of marriage, we both know Carrie is a skeptic of marriage and still is one even after marrying Big.
      Aiden treated Carrie horribly throughout their 2nd shot at a relationship, guilt tripping, forcing her to put up with a lot of stuff she doesn't need to deal with.
      Make no bones about it, Aiden had no right to nearly make her homeless and kick her out of an apartment she had had for a decade, there are always other options on the table like renting it out to her.

      I would certainly not allow any man to forbid me from seeing anybody, not even an ex I cheated with. Because yes, maybe Carrie pressured Aidan to get back together, but he wasn't a helpless victim. I am a bit sick of people blaming Carrie's housing crisis on her spending habits. This is such a classic case of blaming the victim, her rent control apartment went co-op, who could suddenly come up with $40000 cash without any problem? She always paid her bills, her shoe collection took years to build, I don't think she was financially irresponsible. She just didn't prepare for the crazy exploitative housing market, this uncontrolled vulture capitalism is the big problem not her shoe collection.

    I never really got why people were so angry about that scene with Charlotte since Carrie clearly states that a) she knows she acts irrational and unfair and b) this is about Charlotte not offering to help (like the other girls) more than it is about Carrie demanding the money from her. The reason she feels fine accepting the money from her in the end and not miranda, Samantha or Mr. Big is because it also offers an opportunity for closure to Charlotte through selling her wedding ring to help a friend.
    As others have pointed out, Charlotte makes pretty irresponsible financial decisions herself, had she not come from a rich family and married rich on top, her situation would be just as bad as Carrie's.

    The thing is that Charlotte would never be in Carries situation. She comes from money and married some more money, yes. But she is also financially responsible. This can be examplified with the shoe fetish episode. Charlotte falls in love with a shoe but does not buy it (even though of course she can afford it). If it had been Carrie she would have taken 400 dollars from her 900 dollars savings and bought the shoes. Carrie was 90% in the wrong in this episode but the 10% where Charlotte went wrong was when she was trying to change the subject, friends must be able to talk about financial hardships with eachother.

    I was always on carrie's side in the ring argument. Because yeah, Charlotte clearly comes from a pretty privileged background, she would never have had to worrry financially - even in her divorce, the issue never seems to be financial, she never even gets another job. It's the lecture about finances that pushed Carrie too far after she was so silent when Miranda and Samantha were both offering the money. I do wish they showed something of Carrie repaying that money though.

    It is interesting that these TV-Show people thought Aiden was not rich. I actually always considered him to be quite rich and successful. However, there are some guys who downplay it when they can. Even with their clothes. We do have such guys a lot in Germany. Downplaying your wealth is extremely common. Somehow, everyone wants to be middle class here. And Aiden seems to go exactly for this type of vibe. This is quite a contrast to Mr. Big, John, who somehow seems to enjoy a lot showing the status symbols. As Carrie also loves status symbols, there is a little potential for conflict here already between Aiden and her....And I do like Aiden but I am not absolutely sure that Carrie is the best choice for him. He is a good guy. He is sweet and caring and it is great how he works on overcoming his problems with her smoking and how he even is willing to try again after Carrie cheating but he a a type needs someone more grounded than Carrie. Carrie is witty, funny and intelligent, all qualities that a man like Aiden would love but I guess she is also a lot a woman for the big city life whilst Aiden can do without it. I do also think that deep down, Aiden wants kids whilst I am not really convinced Carrie wants kids.What I can understand, though, is that when he is turned down by Carrie, he wants his appartment back. Even though I guess that if I had been Aiden, I would have demanded rent for it.
