This movie didn't just show anxiety well, it shows anxiety triggered by a learning disability well. Which is basically what Dory is struggling with and has been sense she was young. Short term memory lose? Try processing disorder! And I love it. Its so relatable to someone like me who grew up with this type of anxiety related to not understanding what was happening around me. There is nothing scarier then the fear that you can't help your self, and you are lost and don't know where to go. But Dory shows a solution, that I and many people like me use every day. The ability to just keep swimming.

I got lost (or separated from my family) easily as a child. No matter how much my mother watched me. I just got easily distracted. Even in my 20s the panic I would get if I missed the stop, while taking a bus, would get me upset. Missed a stop? Get off the next one, only a couple blocks away! My brain didn't think that, thankfully, the bus driver said not to worry and she let me off a the next one. I still knew that area and was fine! The panic left as soon as I realized that. When driving I would pay attention just fine. But, if I'm on the freeway, never fails, something would get my attention (though I'm still paying attention to the driving itself) and I would remember that I might miss my exit because my mind wandered. I would panic because I thought I had missed it, then I would miss it anyway because the panic distracted me! So, I get off the next exit, turn on GPS her reroute me (I learned not to go without it after that). Thank goodness for GPS on my phone! I live outside of Reno, so when I go to Reno I put the GPS because she will remind me before I forget or start to panic. Also, it helps me stay within the speed limit because there just are not enough signs on the road telling me and I hate not knowing. My psychiatrist recently told me this kind of panic confirms I'm on the spectrum. He didn't say where but a previous psychiatrist told me that I had Asperger's Syndrome.
I thought you'd want to see that you are not the only one that panics over things everybody else shrugs at.
I wish I was diagnosed with AS as a child because I didn't understand anything back then. Scenarios, movies, idioms, jokes, song lyrics (mainly because I had undiagnosed hearing issues), etc had to be explained to me. I constantly asked "Why?". I drove my mother crazy! She tried, but she would benefited from my diagnosis, too. I barely made it through school. In fact, I dropped out of public school and went into a form of homeschool for most of high school. Then, I had to drop out of that (in 12 grade, so I almost made it), then got my GED as 23. Children were harsh and teachers didn't understand. Co-workers were harsh and bosses don't understand, either. I finally got a boss that tries on my current 17th job (I'm 43 years old).
Get/keep a psychiatrist/counselor who Listens to you, get diagnoses, learn how to adapt to them and live on! Good luck!

I liked Finding Dory. I thought it was cute and charming.
While initially it is a pointless sequel (considering how the original ended all in a nice little bow), there is a lot of decent moments in it.
It's also one of the few Pixar/Disney movies that doesn't have a twist villain or a forced antagonist.

    • @MitsukotheDarkAngel

Honestly, I liked it, but I would have rather seen it as a 40 minute feature than a movie. It has a great story, but they needed to stretch it too much to fill the running time of a movie.

@@MarioKonga Without the humans realizing they're antagonists. By the way, I think antagonist and conflicts have differences.
Antagonist - A role where they opposed the protagonist by obstacles.
Conflict - An important part of the plot where problems are settled.
So I don't considered Dory's mental issue as a so-called "villain" of the story. It's more of a conflict. At least there are few villains in the film were already appeared there so that's that.

JinxMinx How? By giving someone to blame on a forced villain and only have one or two scenes on Elsa and her inner turmoils? I’m sorry if it sounds rude or harsh, but Frozen did have an original script where Elsa had stronger character motivation and that was changed because they liked her song.

@@canvas_125 Even if they didn't focus on it as much, the scenes with Elsa where she has inner turmoil are pretty good. I related to her character a lot. xChijouChanx Fair enough; if you enjoyed it that’s awesome. However to me, it felt stronger in the original script where Elsa strikes Anna’s heart (unintentionally of course) out of anger. The difference was that in the original film Dory actually had a fully fleshed character with dimension and depth. There was a good foundation for a story based on her. Although i will correct you on the reference to the first movie...It seems way more referenced to its 4th movie Herbie Goes Bananas! The reason I say this, is because the Herbie that they threw off of the ship, was actually never found again. The movie crew tried to search for it and recover it, but it was never found. So I like to see this as a reference to that Volkswagen bug as the Lost Herbie.

I have such nostalgic connections to Finding Nemo but Finding Dory did hit the notes I wanted it to hit. Dory is explored more as a character, Nemo even gets more of an opportunity to try new weird things, and I do like its approach to the morale of anxiety, looking into why its there and showing some workarounds. I do think Finding Nemo is technically better but I am surprised Finding Dory ended up being fantastic even if Nemo ended on a near perfect note.

I also happened to really enjoy the sequel despite thinking that the original film would not ever have a sequel in the future, but it’s cool that we did get one years later and getting to have more of an insight into Dory as a character given what hints and context clues were hinted at in the first film with her short term memory loss. Of course, I definitely prefer the first film over this one, but I really appreciate how sentimental this one was too and delved into a character who struggles with a disability. As a person with Autism, it’s nice to know that Pixar made a film with a protagonist who suffers from a disability.

I like that this movie tackles what it's not only like to live with a disability but also for the family of people with said disabilities, at least from what I hear I've yet to see the movie. I can identify with that so much because I'm autistic and my parents have to work around that since this doesn't go away. Off note, the octopus being able to escape and move around like that is not completely far fetched. Octopi are so smart and so human like that there are multiple stories of octopi doing everything from chucking one bad shrimp they found at their handler after escaping their tank, trying to escape their tanks, getting out of their tanks to eat the fish in the other tanks after memorizing the night guard patterns and even destroying lights that were bugging them.

The problem I had with this movie is that it stretched my suspension of disbelief. There were SO many instances of the characters having to rely ENTIRELY on luck to get through an obstacle (such as Marlin and Nemo having to hop across water sprinklers or flying into the air only to land in a fishbowl). Yes I know the first film had a Clownfish crossing the entire ocean but applying such luck-based logic in a place that is even MORE dangerous for fish (little water and all those people) it just stretched it too thin

I think its a good movie, but a one big problem: at the moment, when the animals doesnt behave like animals anymore, like when the octopus drives the car, the movie lost me. of course its a cartoon and the animals are acting like humans, but in the first movie it was all from a believeable animal point of view. but this is to unrealistic for me to enjoy. thats looney tunes slapstick.

God people are boring. It's animation, you can do whatever you want with it, which is the whole point of the medium. And that scene was super hilarious. Also, it is in character of the Mimic Octopus to be extremely intelligent and find ways of escaping, it's just done in a Pixar way. And come now, the entire first film was about a fish scaling the whole sea to find his son. In no way would that ever happen. It's an animated film.

I have heard so many people talk crap about this film and I don't get why. The first film wasn't my favourite film ever and neither is this one, but that's fine. They are both charming, heart-warming and pretty to look at. I don't get why people always get angry when a film just isn't surpassing the original... not all sequels have to do that. The sequel usually exists because the first film was so good, so living up the expectations already set and surpassing them is a pretty tall order. This film is fine and I was happy I saw it... I don't know why that isn't enough for some people.

I loved the first film so much. The reason why I dislike Finding Dory so much is the fact that her memory is soooooo subjective and plot driven. It makes no sense. Additionally, the first was this heartwarming story about the lengths a parent would go to to protect and get back their child. Meanwhile, the sequel points out how shitty react when their child goes missing. Wait for them to come back I guess. It would make more sense for Marlin to wait for Nemo seeing as Nemo could at least remember where home is but to just abandon your mentally disabled kid, not even look for them but just hope that they return? I don't know it rubbed me the wrong way.

I feel like the movie as a whole stretches suspension of disbelief a lot, but the climax in particular was just something I will never buy into. Overall I did feel the movie was a letdown. And maybe it's because I hated the climax so much but yeah, Even with Incredibles 2, the upgraded animation and the new direction they took the characters felt like the sequel was worth it. This just feels hollow. Except for Sigourney Weaver. Her part was actually hilarious.

Rather than being a pointless sequel that puts the side character/comic relief in the front seat, this film feels like one that would speak to a specific audience while being enjoyable for everyone and I really admire that. She's so scared to do anything by herself because she thinks her disability makes her unable. I know that. I feel that. I still don't drive because of that. But I do so much more. I got through college on my own. I'm working and supporting myself and living on my own. I love both of these films but there was something that this film lacked, at least for me, that the first film nailed. The impact. The first film has an overprotective father who has done goofed and goes out of his way to find his one and only son and seeing Nemo hearing his journey is so thrilling. It clearly shows that Marlin does care and will do anything for him.
Finding Dory, as you said, kinda repeats the first film but it is a story of Dory and her anxiety. How things slowly falls apart on her on both ends. And the way how they did it is amazing but it lacks the impact. I guess it's because I don't see myself being connected to Dory whereas I can connect to Marlin in the first film.
Now I'm not a father, but even as a kid, I did heavy blows that affected both me and my family and I sadly do today. Everytime I look back to the first film, I reflect my heavy blows everytime when Marlin overdid his trope and goes out of his way to find his son just like how I go out of my way to fix my mistakes.
Again, I enjoyed both films, but for me, the first one will always hit a home run because of how I can easily connect to it

    • @Cloud-dt6xb
      @Cloud-dt6xb 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Well speaking as someone who's autistic and is currently dealing with anxiety.I have to say judging it souly based on how well you personally connect to it is kinda unfair. And to be frank if you have'nt dealt with anxiety you probably will one day, seeing a charachter like Dory suceed inspite of her disabilites is something alot of people can relate to. Hell I appreciate it even more now with some personal issues I have going on. It takes real mental strength to fight back against anxiety and not let it keep you down, it's probably why I always loved Dory overcoming her low point so much, to the point where I actually considered her movie to be just a little bit better than Captain America civil war which also had some amazing writing and emotional stuff.

"The chase scene was pointless?" Nonsense! It served a point in getting Dory stuck in a soda ring so the humans would take her into the institute to make sure she's okay, as well as make Marlin a little upset at Dory for getting Nemo hurt. That way, Marlin would regret his words and would be seeking out Dory not just to make sure she's safe but to apologize.
Doug, your review is great, but I wish you'd put more thought into the reason certain plot points happened.

I know some people see sequels as cynical cash grabs, but in some cases, genuine passion is really put into them. Finding Dory is such a film - it does slip into the "unnecessary sequel" territory, being that the story was wrapped up in Finding Nemo, and the franchise wasn't being set up to tell a continuing story, however Pixar still worked hard on it, and it really is an enjoyable film.

    • @Cloud-dt6xb

People always assume that a sequel is automatically made with money in mind, but that's why I actually take the time to actually listen to behind the scenes stuff as more often than not peoples baseless assumptions prove to be dead wrong about why a sequel was made. Dory was'nt made for money, Andrew Stanton saw the film in 3d since it's first release and felt her story was incomplete. Which it WAS in the first movie, Marlin and Nemo's stories were wrapped up but Dory was still a mystery. Now we got it and both movies together feel like one complete package paid off nicely with the end of Finding Dory.

Im australian, and i think that that is the reason i didnt enjoy this movie as much as i couldve. I have never had that sense of under-representation before, but this film felt like such an american-ised version of a movie that was so close to my heart. It never occured to me that the reason i connected so much to finding nemo was because it was set in my own country. You do see australia in a lot of big budget movies as it is a major filming location, but always a sub-in for another location (the new york scene in thor ragnarok was filmed in Brisbane, my city) and never showcased as itself.
Wow, that was a tangent. These are just some thoughts that bugged me about finding dory and other big budget movies. Again, ive never been someone to feel under-represented, but this movie was the first to make me think about that
