Planes is a 2013 American 3D computer-animated sports comedy film produced by Disneytoon Studios and released by Walt Disney Pictures. It is a spin-off of Pixar's Cars franchise. Despite not being produced by Pixar, the film was co-written and executive produced by Pixar and Walt Disney Animation Studios' then-chief creative officer John Lasseter, who directed the first two Cars films. The film stars the voices of Dane Cook, Stacy Keach, Priyanka Chopra in her Hollywood debut, Brad Garrett, Teri Hatcher, Danny Mann, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Roger Craig Smith, John Cleese, Carlos Alazraqui, Val Kilmer, and Anthony Edwards.

I LOVE the Cars movies. I specifically made a point to AVOID Planes for the simple reason the studio. The Cars movies were made by Pixar and Planes was made by Disneytoon. The studio that made all the direct to video Disney sequel. Knowing that fact alone was what made me avoid it because I knew what it was going be in terms of quality.
I’m someone who will DEFEND the Cars movies while acknowledging flaws people find in them. I’m fine with people not liking them now. The Planes movies? Yeah go ahead, hate them. I have no interest in seeing and I don’t care. I just want to stick with the characters that I actually know were made with love and that I like them already.

Fun Fact: Originally this film was going to be direct-to-dvd but apparently Disney was "so impressed with the film" that they felt it warranted a theatrical release. At no point did "money" factor into this decision
I definitely wasn't expecting this because I forgot it even existed.
That's definitely a bad sign for any studio when a movie is so forgettable, the audience forgot it existed years later

I don't know why, but I actually liked that movie more than this one for some reason. Maybe it was because I had fun watching Cad get pissed off repeatedly by others. Or maybe because Dipper stole my heart(the way she treated Dusty was so pure and cute).
I admit, I have a soft spot for the Cars movies, even Cars 2. But Planes was just too forgettable to me.

Audience: "Well it's been years since The Incredibles came out and there's so much potential for a-

Yeah, I couldn't find much to find to like about it. Even as somebody who enjoys the Cars movies.
I thought this was a ripoff from another studio...
You know what sucks? The teaser trailer got me interested in it (as someone who enjoys the Cars movies), but this is just a weak retread of a good movie.
Oh, yeah. I saw that too, and I remember being hyped because of that Rob Zombie track. And yeah I was kinda let down on how the actual movie turned out...
My favorite thing about this movie was identifying all the different aircraft, since I'm an aviation fan. And I do like the sensation and look of aircraft flying along, so that was nice for me.
Everything else wasn't all that great.

These past few Disneycembers have had at least one movie that broke Doug. In 2016, it was Mulan 2. Last year, it was The Cheetah Girls. This year, it's Planes.

I remember the NC review of Cat in the Hat when the NC was talking on phone to Malcolm-Devil who said he was working on his new hell franchise. And we saw Planes on his files.
At that time I honestly thought it was a joke made for the review. Then I realized later the movie actually existed.

Actually, if it weren't for all those anime movies then 2013 definitely _would_ be the worst year for animated movies.

You know it's bad when Doug has to reconsider a prior negative opinion connected to it.
Remember the time we had 2 sequels to Cars, a spin-off of Cars and a sequel to that spinoff, all before we had an Incredibles sequel? What a dark time
This movie does ONE thing right: It respects aircraft flight movements and behaviors. They do a really good job, in fact. Compare how these things fly to any aircraft from the Incredibles movies, and you can see. It makes Top Gun look like Jay Jay the Jet Plane. The landscapes and plane models and smoke effects are all really great, and as an airplane enthusiast, I enjoyed watching them fly...
But that's it. Everything Doug said is right. By-the-numbers plot, shocking existence of war and death in a children's show (tho Cars 2 killed a lot of "people"), a few massive breaches of physics when certain parts should have resulted in spectacularly fatal crashes, lousy ass puns ripping off the Jolly Rogers and the Eisenhower. It's less straight up bad, but just, not GOOD.
I just wanted to say that it did the one thing right: good looking airplane flight.
I love that Pixar hated this. That's why Disney did this, not Pixar.
Even the animation is off! The animation in Cars is BRILLIANT!

My 2 year old son LOVES Cars, I thought he would enjoy this, but he completely checked out in 5 minutes. I turned it off, and turned Cars on for the millionth time and he was glued to it. I don’t understand how this was such a failure in every way, it’s not interesting, it’s super boring... just bad.

I... actually unironically liked this film. But, knowing how many movies Doug has seen with this exact same storyline, it makes a lot of sense why this kind of thing would break him. It's very bare-bones and basic, but I didn't really get the impression that it was trying to be anything more than that.
(Though I will admit, maybe it's the WWII nerd in me, but I actually really liked Skipper's character and that flashback. Again, not really very original, but it surprised me enough.)

This movie is an easy 10/10 because it confirmed Pearl Harbor was a person.
Yeah, this movie was meant to be direct to DVD, and was animated by the folks who made those DVD movies so the quality wasn’t Pixar/theatrical level at all..... but Disney figured they’d cash in and put it on the big screen. It didn’t do big money, but technically was profitable since its budget was much lower than the usual theatrical films.
They played this movie in school because the teacher wanted to show her appreciation for all the hard work we did. When the movie was over, I was thinking “A Pop Quiz would’ve been a nicer reward”
