I've dealt with almost every issue here except the rust and clogged EGR valve. Like the guy says, don't bother replacing the hands free link and just disconnect it. It's very simple. After 190k miles it's still a great running car.
Sadly (?) I had the Hands Free unplugged for my '06 TL. I don't make phone calls while driving, and it was dragging the battery down whenever the car sat for more than a week, so I just had it unplugged.
There was a class action lawsuit where Acura is now replacing the Bluetooth unit in the MDX and TL. Check with your dealer. I personally can't be bothered to replace it. I never used it once in 14 years of driving it.

I have this car and it’s been 7 years. To be honest it’s definitely got it’s troubles but if you do all the engine maintainer properly it runs smooth. I replace almost everything major all at once, put some koni struts, Tesla style Navi, and I drive it calmly with quiet continental DSW tires. The car runs amazing and so quietly. At 190k and can go for another 50k Easy before tranny goes out.
I’m not sure why people hate on the automatics, I’ve had mine since 2009 and while my dash has cracks, I’ve had to replace sensors, and even had issues with the radio. My automatic transmission has been solid. Car has over 240,000 miles and keeping up with fluids and filters has kept it out of the shops and on the roads. But over all good video. Edit: I wrote the above over a year ago. Since then I've fully upgraded my suspensions (original owner had Tien front and rears) but didnt bother with any camber kits. BT module a continual problem, I replaced original ($450 with dealer reprogramming) but ended up pulling it and putting in an aftermarket unit. Nav unit not glitzy but works fine. An awesome daily driver. Hope you love yours as much as I do mine. Thanks for the video.
I’ve had my 04 going on 8 years. I’ve done power steering pump/ o rings and have the notorious cracked dash of course. Only other thing so far I’ve fixed is the A/C quit and was a simple relay under the hood. I’m a little over 252k miles now in a automatic and can say I trust it to go across the country anytime. Never had a check engine light. I will say I’ve had the transmission do the “flutter” which only happens in overdrive (shift completely out) at speeds of 45-55. Knowing the car, I keep enough foot on the pedal to keep it out of overdrive at that speed but if it does, simply let off then accelerate again. LOVE my quirky car. My brother has the best kept Acura secret most don’t know about. The 06 Acura RL AWD with 430k on it. Every light you can think of is on the dash lol but I want his car too
@@rdanielbyrd I’m currently at 271k miles now. Everything still works as it should. I had to do oil pump gasket, water pump, tensioner, timing belt, and valve cover gaskets since but that was just a matter of time considering the miles. I just put all new brakes on it last week. Still love the car and trust it
I had a 2007 TL for 15 years. It was great, but had expensive repairs during the last 5 years. The repairs were mostly normal maintenance. That said, I loved driving the car and was still sad when I gave it up. It was my second Tl and it had about 100k miles.
I owned a 04 automatic TL with just under 200k. The best car I've ever owned and I beat the dog shit outta mine. I tested the automatic transmission daily just to see how weak it was and never once had a problem. Not saying it won't happen but mine never failed even after I sold it. Car is still running and driving today by a friend of a friend as a daily driver. Maintain them and if will live up to the honda name (in my opinion)
Interesting review! I continue to love my 2006 Acura TL with 6-speed manual transmission. Since it has been garaged 100% of the time, the paint, headlights, taillights, dash, etc. remain PERFECT. With fewer than 100,000 miles, I believe I can go _ANOTHER_ 100k with this car. Your problems and solutions seem logical; thanks for the vid.
You’re on point on all of them except the trans part. Firstly, the manual version of TL is a rarity to even find. It’s uncommon to find a decent auto version for sale, yet alone a manual one. second, the auto trans from 07-08 TLs uses the RL’s 5 speed auto and its a complete upgrade from the 04-06 year trans. Their failure rate is rare compared to 04-06, and they’re much more reliable therefore they shouldn’t be lumped in the same as the TL trans of 2004-2006.
I've noticed TLs of these years seem to have clear coat issues as well... mine included. I've called acura and they told me that not enough complaints to issue a recall so if your having this issue report it to corporate.
@@evanpakos3733 that's not a big enough issue for a recall, these cars are gems. Either do the work yourself or find a pro. But corporate 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 all that effort can go into improving the car.

Wow, I have been the original owner for my 06 and haven't had most of those issues. Only dashboard which I did the mat first then got coverlay which work out much better. Also the Bluetooth. Yes, get a stick shift! So much faster too, smoke all tl including type s auto.
I've put about 450,000 kms over 2 TLs (first 07 base was lost in a collision, on an 07 TL-S now) and apart from the vapor sensor for the "tighten fuel cap" message and the HFL going dead, it's been mechanically brilliant.
@Redoak33 I replaced the gas cap OEM, tighten fuel cap came back and check engine light. Replaced the purge solenoid valve and it helped because now it’s tighten fuel cap and goes away then comes back but no check engine. My next fix is the charcoal canister 😅
I had a 2004 Acura TL with 180k miles. I bought it when it had 120k on it and have had only 2 problems. @@logansherwood8794 Here in the south, you can find base models starting in the $3,000 range, and Type S models starting in the $5,000 range (automatics). I bought my Type S for $3,000. I don't know how the market is in your area, but it sounds like you have room to negotiate the price. If the owner has maintenance records, it's a big plus. The most important items I would be concerned with, would be the timing belt/water pump, and the transmission fluid and filter change.
i’m at 238,000 kms on my 08 TL-S. So far i’ve only needed to reseal the engine and replace suspension components. the body is absolutely pristine, never winter driven
I'm looking at one of these for a fixer upper. I'm a tow truck driver and pretty much only thing I ever tow the early 2000s accords for are separated ball joints. Don't think I've towed a tl but same chit. Definately something you don't want happening so check them for play regularly. Early 00s tundras used to be brutal for ball joints too but think there was a recall
Another thing to note is in the 2004 all the way up to the 2008s is the a/c water drain tube up under the dash slowly disconnects over time and drips water onto the ecu when using a/c
My 08 Type-S I got 2 years ago has a massive habit of burning through mounts.. think I'm on the 3rd set with it knocking around again.. I've tried finding upgraded options but still can't seem to find a good set. Only other thing is the ventilated seats in mine that aren't built strong enough to withstand normal things like leaning on the seat to reach something in the back quickly or a knee to the bottom of the front seat to grab something from the passenger seat. Had I known before I wouldn't have the holes I do. Otherwise though, this car is so damn reliable and I can always drive with confidence and have a hell of a time whether a quick trip down the street or heading further out. I'll even find myself taking long ways regularly to get more drive time! I also personally like the simplicity of it. I have a late gen smartphone I have connected through AUX that takes care of anything the car can't. The sound is okay enough not to have to get things aftermarket for improvement and getting back to the driving. It is incredible how hard this car hits 2nd. I got it with some cheap wheels and they didn't even last 10k.. so that was where I put more money next time (get the warranty! I've saved myself $$$$s) Due to some city dings and dents I'll probably be selling mine only to get the next best silver and untouched one I find. These are for sure one the forgotten timeless cars that will build value very soon.
READ THIS FIRST!! Updates: *Power Steering Pump @ 1:40 I forgot to describe which pump. There are actually 6 mounts, but the 6th mount that wasn’t shown doesn’t typically go bad as often as the other 5, just wanted to clarify that. The HP changed from 270 to 258 because Acura decided to change the way they rated the HP. Regarding the transmission issue, the 07-08 TLs aren't nearly as bad. However, many owners who have the 07-08 models report/complain about Trans failure. Which is mainly happens if the owner fails to replace the pressure sensors (there are three) when they are experiencing transmissions symptoms, then that could destroy your transmission. If I missed an issue, post them below!
@@TheShinzuiCollective I changed my ATF the first week I got it. It was very black and had metal shavings on the nut. If i waited any longer im sure my transmission wouldve shitted out.
@@TheShinzuiCollective That should be normal practice for ANY AT. Anyone that tells you a transmission never needs its fluid changed is full of shit and should never work on a car again. I started following a regimen of changing my trans fluid every other oil change since I go 6-7500 miles between, so every 15K I replace a good portion of fluid. It's close enough to a 30K full replacement that my fluid stays nice and red, and the only real shavings are on the bolt magnet!
Had a manual 05 TL. Great car. I've had the balljoint pop out one time which bent my fender. big oop. Pros: Car is reliable and the manual shifter feels good. Sounds really good with a CAI. The manual came with brembo brakes and an LSD. DO NOT buy an automatic TL. Go for the 07/08 if you can for the facelift. Cons: This car chugs gas. Other problems the leather seats are prone to cracking and ripping extremely common problem another thing headliners like to fall due to age and mainly heat Also that check gas cap light constantly pops up That's due to the evap purge solenoid on the side of the intake manifold going bad The fix go to a junkyard and find a Denzo purge solenoid that was made in Japan The ones that were made in Mexico were the ones that failed The Japanese ones rarely failed

A bit of an exaggeration there on the autos bro. Transmission issues are not much of an issue from 05 and up, specially 07's to 08's TL/TLS. The transmission is derived from the RL auto on those years. Transmission issues are nearly unheard of on the acurazine forums. I have an auto 07 Type S, the only problem that I have had so far is a cracked radiator once and a small leak on the rack and pinion. That's about it, my 07 is at 92,500 miles, I got it with 79,500 7 years ago.
Ugh, I b going through mounts like crazyyyy, I had to change a whole engine block because the holes into the engine were stripped! Other than that, I also have the torque mount too🤦🏽♂️. Im fully bolted on, w an aftermarket throttlebody, and cams. Im boutta weld that engine into the chassis this time lolllll jk Heres a fix for the mounts tho, Take out the bracket that goes in between the engine and the motor mount. Put a bolt from the INSIDE of the bracket, install the engine motor mount into the bracket, add a nut 🔩 to it, some locktite for vibration. Now you should have the bracket and the motor mount solid together outside the car, it should easy to install as long as the engine is lined up. Do one mount at a time so it can be easier

auto's cost 5 grand to rebuild. or replace with reman. Don't ask me how I know. Also I have been told the trans cooler's are insufficient for hotter climates. So if you have an auto and the trans is still good I would highly recommend installing a larger trans cooler. Edit Took 7 grand and had to wait 4 months and it took 2 transmissions. Because I made the mistake of buying a Jasper transmission, my first transmission failed after 8.6 miles! Find a good transmission shop and just have it rebuilt. I had to pay for installation twice and I had to pay for diagnoses. Jasper transmission only paid for 50 cents on the dollar for warranty labor and they only paid for half hour of diagnoses (at half the rate I was charged) and I had to pay for a full hour.

All depends on how you drive it and keep it maintained and what you use. Any Honda owner should know there are only two brands of trans fluid to use and that's honda dw1 or Idemitsu type H. Better off with Honda since it's alot cheaper.
I’m thinking of getting an ‘06 TL. The fully loaded one with the touchscreen inside. It’s got 110k miles and the owner changed out the trans fluid 30k miles ago. I spend about $ 600/ year on my TL at 230k miles. I keep doing it because it looks so damn good still. Did a transmission rebuild at 190k in 2017. Now oil is leaking unfortunately. Every 3g TL has a crack in the air intake just after the engine air filter. Every TL has lower control arm bushings that fall apart. At least mine lasted 230k. I had a shithole of a time trying to find a shop to press the bushings in and just went aftermarket. Which isn’t as smooth. Control arms from Acura TL are $500 each. I did transmission rebuild at Green Transmissions in West Covina area in CA. Awesome place. Transmission oil was replaced every 30k since 60k miles. Dash does crack even though I had aerospace 303 dash protectant and a sun shield that I should have used more often. Oil leaks are common for older cars. Spool valve assembly gasket. Oil pump. Oil pan. Rear main seal. Bunch of areas that are related to transmission or timing belt side.

At 190k and can go for another 50k Easy before tranny goes out.
With the Tesla style navi do you lose the steering wheel controls or how has it held up over time?
I’m not sure why people hate on the automatics, I’ve had mine since 2009 and while my dash has cracks, I’ve had to replace sensors, and even had issues with the radio. My automatic transmission has been solid. Car has over 240,000 miles and keeping up with fluids and filters has kept it out of the shops and on the roads. But over all good video.
Edit: I wrote the above over a year ago. Since then I've fully upgraded my suspensions (original owner had Tien front and rears) but didnt bother with any camber kits. So I invested in Skunk2 upper wis

Every light you can think of is on the dash lol but I want his car too
There is actually a fix for the vibration in 5th gear. Lookup acura service bulletin 05-017, it involves installing a dampner on the underbody.

I don't know how the market is in your area, but it sounds like you have room to negotiate the price. If the owner has maintenance records, it's a big plus. The most important items I would be concerned with, would be the timing belt/water pump, and the transmission fluid and filter change.

*Power Steering Pump @ 1:40
I forgot to describe which pump.
The power steering pump O-ring issue is not unique to the Acura TL, it is also an issue with the 7th Gen Honda Accord.

07-08 Tl got upgraded automatic transmission which are more reliable than the 04-06 auto transmissions

Pros: Car is reliable and the manual shifter feels good. Sounds really good with a CAI. The manual came with brembo brakes and an LSD. DO NOT buy an automatic TL. Go for the 07/08 if you can for the facelift.

Transmission issues are not much of an issue from 05 and up, specially 07's to 08's TL/TLS. The transmission is derived from the RL auto on those years. Transmission issues are nearly unheard of on the acurazine forums.

Heres a fix for the mounts tho, Take out the bracket that goes in between the engine and the motor mount. Because I made the mistake of buying a Jasper transmission, my first transmission failed after 8.6 miles! Find a good transmission shop and just have it rebuilt. I had to pay for installation twice and I had to pay for diagnoses. Jasper transmission only paid for 50 cents on the dollar for warranty labor and they only paid for half hour of diagnoses (at half the rate I was charged) and I had to pay for a full hour.

how many KM are on your TL, is it a high km example & you just bought an aftermarket one and replaced the stock one? looking at buying one in a few days but its an 2004 auto...fml but the car is so clean & well taken care of with service records and everything for cheap so im probably still going to take the chance and just do what you said to hopefully be safe
Just got a 08 TLS auto I hope everything goes well
Check the radiator, under the car there are 2 transmission lines that go into the bottom of the radiator. If there’s rust replace the radiator.
@Adil 4200 220km stock needs some parts for safety I was worried about the transmission since its auto lol
@Adil depends where your at am in Toronto Canada auto or 6 speed?
I'm thinking about buying a automatic 2005 Acura TL
Tighten the fuel cap :D
Most annoying shit ever
lmfaoooo i was searching as to why my check engine kept going on and off randomly XD
@@clipsconfidential my Acura had a oil leak been driving my car without oil and now my engine is fucked
Just like any kind of vehicle if you don't maintain it there will be problems . Alot of the problems can be found on a ton of different cars .
someone selling an '05 automatic with 48k miles, older couple that took care of it, and looks in pristine condition. theyre asking 9500, should i get it?
Damn.... Never heard a honda have that many problems!!
The transmission issue is common among 1999 to 2004 models. 3rd gen has a much better trans
Hey man I have an 04 Tl with 146k on it and the trans has a lot of metal shavings in the trans fluid meaning time for a new trans. I know that replacing it will be worth the $ in the long haul how much were you able to get yours rebuilt for? Im looking around right now because I don’t have the bread to just swipe my card lol
@@DaynenOBryant is it shifting okay? Make sure to change transmission fluid with the Honda original every 30k miles at minimum.
Green transmissions did mine for 1900 ish. 40k warranty unlimited time. It’s cheap for so cal area. Which area are you in ?
Yeah it’s shifting normal i’m just scared of waiting too long to get it fixed and i’m definitely gonna check them out i’m in San Diego ! Appreciate you getting back to me thanks man.
@@DaynenOBryant it’s quite a drive but if you do go with them tell him Charlie sent you.
Yelp reviews are excellent.
By the way the labor it takes to get the transmission out is the majority of cost. While the transmission is out you may want to change some items such as rear main seal and the o ring above it. As well as the transmission mount. The labor alone for the job is insane but if doing the transmission rebuild , Kyu will do those for you for just the parts cost. Awesome guy. P
