    There was a kid back in the early 80s that swam near the spillway, he survived but is paralyzed for life, the fall broke his neck. Others have been killed. Stay out. Go to sunset Beach instead. Don't be stupid

    I LOVE swimming in the Welland canal and I am so glad I watched this and know what parts NOT to go to.

    Hey the rush how did we not die

  • @Sion.Ryan.Green.

    Warning signs should explain WHY. Hidden dredgers can pull you under ......that would put people off.

    • @mikaylakruger1064
      @mikaylakruger1064 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree! A warning sign without a reason will be considered more of a challenge for most people. Don't just say it's dangerous, tell us why it's dangerous!

    Canals freak me out for some reason. :/

      The only one that bothers me is the Hydro Canal in Niagara Falls, Ontario. Yikes! Good luck getting out if you fall into that one.

    I don't even jump into Lake Erie >.> God knows Buffalo's canal is just a river of rust... I can't believe kids swim in that place.
    Especially after we found out what happens after a heavy rain O_O YUCK!

    Good information … probably valid today (2023) … but should be updated to reflect the current safety precautions in effect today.

    @DevynYoshi Actually, for a fact-only video, I don't see how people could say any of the "acting" is bad. It's more of a documentary...they're not changing voices or anything, or trying to be in character. They're just being typical guys their age....

    I grew up swimming in the Welland Canal in Welland. I’m still alive and didn’t catch any dangerous diseases. Where people get these ideas is beyond me

      I swim in the canal all summer and I love it. I think the canal water is so healthy for you. Did you ever swim in any areas that had strong currents? Any recommendations for good areas to swim? I swim behind the Best Western part of the canal mainly but I want to find some different spots to swim in this summer and don't want to end up in choppy waters.

    Well the warning signs really seem shitty. Here in Europe it would have been marked much clearer / had a fence there to prevent from even entering there,

    Well...it was probably shot out of a pipe like the one at :56-:57 into another canal or a resorvoir. I'm sure it was likely quite mangled in the process of going through the pipe, though.

    As a person that grew up in St. Catharines, right next to the Welland canal, not one person I knew ever swam in these waters. There are many places to swim in the area including Lake Ontario that is 30 mins. away. Besides, the canal water is so dirty, you would need a bath after swimming in it.

    • @mikaylakruger1064
      @mikaylakruger1064 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I swim in the canal all the time. I feel 100% cleaner in that water than the one that comes from the shower. Tap water is filthy. The welland canal is NOT dirty and is in fact a beautiful place to scuba dive, swim and use your boat.

  • @alecmotem3038

    Why don’t they implement the same standard of warning signs that they use near OPG hydro dams - I think having a sign describing the full severity of the risk of drowning is a lot more effective than just a simple no swimming symbol

    • @berettaboi
      @berettaboi 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      There's typically (especially after 9/11/2001) plenty of signage stating "no trespassing", not that that's too warm of dangers, but your technically not supposed to be there in the first place.

    • @berettaboi

      People of Thorold, Ontario. ;) I should mention, the old canal, which is directly connected to the current canal

    I took my sailboat through the locks. When they open the valves, holy crap. I mean... the waves we're pretty big and we had to hold onto the ropes to keep the boat on the side. Also, the the beginning of lock 4,5 and 6 (6:16) and they had to drain it. We we're tied up on the dock. The waves we're so strong our ropes almost snapped.

    Dont see a danger jumping into a pool where water is discharged into but not one that is discharging with unseen intakes dragging swimmers in.

    • @johnanders8861
      @johnanders8861 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      fatwalletboy2 it can cause a recirculating current, though you are right, it is less dangerous than the intake side of the canal

    I have it on very good authority that that line was actually adlibbed. No writing required.

    @kossfringe
    Thank you Koss for that astute assessment. However I clearly referenced that I was speaking of Buffalo's canal, not the welland canal. If it means anything, my Grandfather & Grandmother (who lived in St. Cathy's, but now lives in North Bay) took me to see the ships all the time. :-] However, as I said - you guys have inviting swimming holes. Lake Erie is just a cesspool and our canals are just pure unadulterated evil. They aren't even inviting, just... evil.

    @SuperTabitha22 You can see the Welland Waterways, as it is in Ontario. Canada, not the States. Welland is not far from Niagara Falls. Hope you get to see it.

      A neat canal system semi - closeby in the states is the Erie Canal system in Western NY. But yes, this is southern Ontario, Canada, just across the border, not hard to access really.
