    Also prepare for suction from passing freighters..huge displacement ...stay alert!

    Extremely informative. Will be bringing our new boat thru from Detroit to Toronto in the Spring. Honestly, I had no idea what to expect until I watched your vid. Greatly appreciate the time and effort you put into it.

      Thanks CeeJay! I hope your transit goes well. We had very strong winds from astern, hopefully your day will be more calm. Enjoy!

    I don't have a boat I don't know anything about boats at the present time, I don't really know why I'm watching this video but now hoping that one day I have my own and use these references 😊 I do want to move to the Niagara region soon. Thx 👍

    This was simply great step by step advice. I am preparing to transit the Welland Canal in my sailboat this summer. I will need to watch the video again!

    Do you have to step your mast to traverse the Welland? About how much did it cost in fees to traverse? well done, thanks for posting!

      Hi Nick. Glad you liked the video. You do not need to step the mast to transit the Welland. It is a big ship canal with lots of room, and lifting bridges for sailboats to safely pass under them.

    Thank you, very good explanation of the procedure. I especially enjoyed the "Tone of your Voice," you could do commercials, great for instructions. In a "Nut Shell," your comments were very professional, your display/use of Seamanship procedures was excellent.

    A lot of great information about the Welland transit. I've watched your videos multiple times soaking up all the experienced advice. This is an immense help as I will be going down bound this September. I've subscribed to your channel.

      Glad you found the video helpful. It's a challenging transit, no doubt, but with preparation it will be a lot smoother. Good luck!

    Super useful information as I've got a 28" sailboat that's going into Champlain next season. Do smaller boats still need 3 line handlers up-bound?

      Hi Jeff. Glad you liked it. I would check with the canal authority website to see their requirements. If they don't have any, I would think you could get by with 2 people, but the more, the less stressful!

    Excellent video. I've done the Erie Canal which is a good prep for the Welland. Everything you said is correct about dealing with the lock walls, line handling, wearing gloves, protecting your boat, etc. Thanks for helping me to fill in my missing information on transiting the Welland Canal. I live nearby the canal and would like to go up to Georgian Bay and then sail over to Lake Michigan heading for Grand Haven where I have family.

      You're welcome and you have many fascinating places to see along your route to Michigan. Don't miss the North Channel too. It's pretty amazing.

    This has been an excellent presentation and very much appreciated. We may come through this summer if we return from the North Channel to Kingston area. I am feeling much better having the benefit of your video. It is a different experience than the Trent-Severn which we did a few years ago.

    Great video, one question
    did you stop your engine during the drops? or you should run it all the time?

    • @LifeFourPointZero
      @LifeFourPointZero  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello Berk. We did a little of both. Downlocking was a little easier to keep the engine running but when uplocking the diesel fumes can be very difficult if not dangerous when you are sitting down in a deep cavern waiting to rise up for fresh air. It can be bad downlocking if you have to wait for a long drop, or other boats are around you too.
