Doc scored over 30,000 pts in the NBA and ABA combined which would put him 7th all-time. Unlike most of the guys ahead of him, the Doctor made his house calls back when defense was still allowed. And before players were rewarded 3 pts for a jump shot. Dr J was one of the biggest heroes amongst Black kids along with Ali and Bruce Lee during that era.

These are NBA legends, multiple time NBA champions and all stars, hall of famers, all time greatest players all oozing about the greatness of Dr J. Tells volumes of how great and a generational player he truly was. Sometimes numbers don't do a player justice and Julius Erving is a prime example of that.

      - Exactly. Being the best doesn’t always mean you have all the best stats, or the most championships. There’s many other variables, and the Dr checked all those boxes.

If you didn't see ABA Julius? You didn't see Julius. Without showing his full game, NBA Julius was the 1-2 player in the league from 77-82 when players like Kareem, Moses, Ice, Pistol, Bird, Magic, Walton, E, David Thompson... were at the top of their games. Imagine Jordan blocking shots and grabbing rebounds. The closest to ABA Julius the NBA saw was the 77 Finals when he averaged 30 a game, was clearly the best player on the floor, but at times, had to play against his teammates, as well as the Blazers. If he wasn't such a team player, would be recognized as the greatest player of all time. Had to see ABA Julius to understand. Or, you can look at his stats.

I was in high school in the late 70's and we completely idolized Dr J. In our gym we'd move the portable high jump mat under the basket, set up a series of steps up to a pommel horse, sprayed stick'em on our hands so we could palm the ball, and try to operate like The Doctor. I saw the Rock the Baby dunk on Cooper, the windmill reverse layup, and the FT line dunk in the dunk contest. I hated Bill Walton's Blazers and the Lakers for denying him a ring, but all was forgiven when he finally got one. Doc is still NBA royalty. Then I got to watch Bird/Magic, Michael and Kobe, but with the way they play and promote the game these days, I long for the days of plumbers and firemen.

Agreed. I think Dr. J's time in the ABA is the reason he doens't get the attention he deserves. For whatever reason, the ABA gets swept under the rug, as if the NBA somehow swallowed it up. Other than Kareem, Dr. J was 'the player' of the 70s and early 80s.

Julius Erving should be paid a healthy residual sum every time the sellers of the ABA get that residual cheque for that phenomenal deal they negotiated with the NBA because he made the ABA the high demand product that it was for the NBA to make that transaction. That deal does not happen if the ABA did not have Doc as their marquee attraction.

I grew up witnessing the Philadelphia 76ers go up against the Boston Celtics for three years in a row in the Eastern Conference Finals from 1980-to-1982. Even before the 7-game series between the Boston Celtics vs the LA Lakers in the 1984 NBA Finals, I often define game-7 standardized by the 1981 & 82 Eastern Conference Finals between the Philadelphia 76ers vs the Boston Celtics with Julius Erving & Larry Bird being the centerpieces before Bird vs Magic officially began.

At one point the Virginia Squires had Julius Erving, George Gervin and George Irvine. That underhand thing he did against the Lakers? I saw him do something similar but much more complicated in the ABA.

Doc was my favorite player growing up but I did not get to see him until he got to the NBA. I would sit with anticipation at the edge of my chair watching him and those great sixer teams and he would come down in the open and he would do something fantastic and I would fall off of my chair. One time Doc came down and was going to the basket and someone undercut him and he went tumbling over him onto the floor,Doc was mad the very next time he came down the floor he slammed it so hard he almost broke his wrist if he had been a big guy like Dawkins or Shaq he would have broke the backboard. He only played 3 years in the NBA before the 35th anniversary and he was named to that 35th anniversary team which was the most exclusive team ever. I'll always remember Bret Mussbergers' iconic line " a house call from the Doctor".
