Wow so insightful. In the 60's we wanted to change the world, in the 70's we wanted to change ourselves, in the 80's we gave up and said "let's just get rich" and started screwing over the other guy for capital gain now in the 90's we're noatalgic about the 60's. That is the best nutshell of the 2nd half of the 20th century I've ever heard.🤔

    • @foreignparticle1320

@Jasul Araez Hejira. To me, the most cohesive album of any singer-songwriter in my collection. Vast, melancholy, with acutely well-observed characters and emotional dynamics. 'Amelia' and the title song are heartbreaking; 'Furry Sings the Blues' is artful realism, as is 'Song for Sharon' (my favorite on the album). It epitomizes her abilities to 'paint' vivid images in music and lyrics.

Wow, David!! Awesome. Thank you! PS: I feel like I am Joni's "biggest fan" since I was 11 years old when I heard her song, "Both Sides Now" being sung by Judy Collins as I was riding the carousel at Hemisfair '68 in San Antonio. I was enraptured and when the carousel ended I jumped off and told my mother I wanted the 45 rpm of that song. I got the record and looked for the composer of that song and it was "Joni Mitchell." I then would see her on the Dick Cavett Show, Johnny Cash, and then came her albums. I grew up with Joni as my musical mentor or twin spirit, or sister, and so much more and her lines ALWAYS pour out of me from time to time and she IS in my blood like holy wine. Much gratitude and love to you and yours, beloved Mr. Hoffman!

That's who the song " Talk to Me" is about. As a lyricist she committed to the idea of actually creating real descriptions of situations unlike others like Dylan who purposely left his lyrics ambiguous so that " each listener can fill in with their own meaning". I hate it when song writers cop out like that.

I was born in 63 and during the 80's I really tried to resist the negative aspects of what was happening in politics. I think a lot of us just wanted to ignore what was happening. That was true for me. Joni sure was right about everything she said and it was very true that people in the 80's were obsessed about making money. I recall a Christmas party that my folks had back in 84 and the only thing people talked about was real estate and investing. This was back in Santa Barbara. All those people I knew from the party bought houses and apartments to rent and they continued that trend to this day. Most of my peers growing up during the 70's and 80's were forced out of California because they couldn't afford the housing. Now we see a huge exodus of people leaving California because high tech businesses are leaving. Those that are homeless there will never be able to get back on their feet by themselves. I live in Colorado now and I have seen the same trend that happened in California. People will point that it's because of Californians or Texans that are transporting their values to other states but that isn't true. What you can point your finger at is greed and it doesn't matter what state you are in. Our culture is centered around making money and it is a cancer that is tearing up apart and the world for that matter. If we don't figure out a better moral system to live by we will be forever under the thumb of the wealthiest. Oh, and I'm not implying that we should hate successful people but find common ground with everyone. We need to grow up.

Thank you so much for sharing this, David! I had no idea you interviewed Joni. She tells things like they are with so much insight...could listen to her talk and think for hours. I respect that she didn't idealize the 60's, although the wave of nostalgia that came in the 90's must have been a welcome relief after the shallowness of the 80's. It seems the propaganda of the times rarely affects her ability to see through the bullshit (the one exception IMHO was her call for censorship during the pandemic...afterall the official science of the day once declared DDT to be safe, and people like "Silent Spring" author Rachel Carson and Joni once dared to question it. Anecdotally I am informed by my grandmother's experience getting Guillain Barre syndrome and becoming paralyzed and almost dying after getting a swine flu shot that was rolled out too quickly in the late 70s with an eerily similar propagand campaign, and I refuse to let her experience be in vain.) I left you a comment a year or so ago quoting a Joni song "Come in from the Cold" about the suppressive culture of the 50's because your video on the same topic reminded me of this line:
"Back in 1957 we had to dance a foot apart
And they hawk-eyed us from the sidelines
Holding their rulers without a heart
And so with just a touch of our fingers
    Could make our circuitry explode
    All we ever wanted
Was just to come in from the cold"
I've been enjoying your channel for several years and recognized you to be a kindred spirit and had a feeling you might be a fellow Joni fan! Thank you for sharing your story of how you came to discover Joni's music through Buffy Sainte Marie! I think most Joni fans can remember with great detail when her music first touched them, because it's such a life changing moment (sort of like how everybody remembers where they were and what they were doing when JFK was shot or on 9/11, only in this case it's a positive version of soul shock.) I found her music at age 17 via reading the liner notes on the song "Woodstock" that CSNY covered on their album Deja Vu (found them by way of the "Wonder Year's" soundtrack...it was the 90's, what can I say?), and then heard two more references to Joni inside other people's songs all within a few weeks (an ad libbed live version of Led Zeppelin's Going to California," and "Got Till It's Gone" by Janet Jackson with a line that says, "Joni Mitchell never lies" - very true!) I had never heard of her before (she had virtually no airplay in the 90s), but this was a sign from the universe, so I bought a couple of her albums at the record store sight unseen and unheard (before internet in my family's house) and was absolutely blown away. My emotional education began that day, and I've never quite been the same!
Thanks so much for the culturally enriching work you do David! I am especially fascinated by the culture of the 60's. I have this feeling I was a hippie in a previous lifetime, and your interviews with people from that time period have helped me to connect with those ideas in a more real way than the way the hippie movement was presented in the mainstream press and Hollywood-ized in film. I really appreciate your content and how you give voices to not only the people you interview from everyday walks of life, but also how you allow and encourage diversity of thought and opinion in the comment section while encouraging civil discourse. That is something that is getting to be rare these days. Take care.

You heard what you wanted to hear about the ‘60s. She said it was a positive, mind-expanding era in which we tried to change the world. You only heard that people were co-opted. You must be a conservative. Your era was the ‘80s which she hated.

Joni Mitchell is a national treasure for both Canada and the United States but most of all she is a treasure for all the thinking, and feeling people of the world who might listen to her voice and take some delight in Joni’s lyricism.

One of the first albums I purchased was her Blue album -so classic and timeless a masterclass of poetry set to music !😎😘

Wonderful as always, David. ... However. at 1:00, no that is not a pic of Edith Piaf, the French musician Joannie was so influenced by. That is Sylvia Plath, the great American/English write and poet. Both Sylvia and Edith died in 1963, but that's their only intersection.

I value the music from the sixties so much. The conversations, the lack of cynicism, the openness of possibility, the education about prejudicism we were taught in school resulted in a feeling of togetherness, of being on a team as we grew to adulthood.
I think it was easier to be yourself then, more comfortable to be alone, because although there was this team spirit in the background, there was alone time needed to mull over new ideas which were often presented in songs.
Your friends felt comfortable trusting each other, which was important.
There were few distractions to keep friends from spending time together. Not much tv was watched. We talked on the phone, but there were no social networks; our networks were face to face, and we enjoyed that. Much talk was about music, it really was the glue that held groups of teens together. Music was like an additional language, tieing everyone together. Language was fine, but songs expressed an added depth to communication between friends, between generations, between all human relationships.
Some music I listened to as a teenager is still in the fabric of my memory. I can recall what I was doing, where I was, who I hung around with, so much of my life can come swelling up when I hear certain songs from back then. Or just a lyric from a song. Lol, I can remember nights when friends, those who could, would sneak out at night, and just walk the streets, all of us singing and laughing and talking about life for an hour or two, then sneak back in, with no one the wiser.
I remember one night in a little fishing village that hadn’t become a tourist trap yet, and where my family had a cottage, staying out all night. Four of us tried to get some sleep in a broken down car. After everyone being grumpy after a night of trying to get comfortable, the sun came up, and we watched it together in awe. We all felt the same, and we were merged as one person. Even today, 50 years later, if I hear Linda Ronstat sing Blue Bayou, it can bring me to tears.
We seemed to have lots of time for school, sports and raising money for sports, babysitting for spending money, ( we all got part time jobs when we turned 16,)chores, hanging out, riding our bikes, reading, hitch hiking to the city to buy clothes and gifts, dating, dances, going on vacations, going to a movie, etc. We lived full lives, knew a lot about our friends and their families. We had each other’s backs in a real way, and life was good.
We weren’t troubled by far off wars and disasters. The world was much larger back then, and the news was very different. It wasn’t presented to instill fear in people. The opposite, really.
