Hello, I have a question.what does it mean when it's hard to turn my steering wheel? It has fluid it's just hard to turn it is also not making anything noise.
I own a 325i 2005 and I love it. Yes I have put some money into the car but it runs like a beast. There is no secret, just take care of your car maintain it and it will run solid. These generation of cars was made to last a lifetime.
I agree with this video because I also had the exact same problems which are fixable with one day of DIY work. I do not recall any problems which took more than one day. Great car and I would buy this car again. BMW are great cars for people who can do their own work.
I had a 2010 BMW 325i. 150k mi. Bought used w/100k. Loved it. Great ride. Then one day it wouldn’t start. Found fuel pump was dead. This is the one year BMW sealed the pump in the gas tank. My mechanic wouldn’t attempt it. He said it’s a dealership job. Dealership wanted $8500. They have to raise the car, remove sub assembly, gas tank, replace fuel pump and put everything back. I got rid of the car. BMW - THE ULTIMATE DRIVING MISTAKE.
I’m sure the dealership cut u a check guessing your financing/leasing it …..if you owned it you definitely could of found a shop to do the job pricy but not 8500
Planned finite lifespan of a car. The previous generation E46 has a fuel pump on the top side of the tank just below the back seat that is relatively simple to replace.
In my opinion, there are some things that can be plastic. Things like intakes, valve covers, etc that aren't going to catastrophically fail, and which can be easily replaced, can be made out of plastic no sweat. Things like oil pans, water pumps, etc though cannot be made of plastic
How can you call this a good engine whereas there are both leaks in coolant and vavle cover? my 20 year old Japanese cars never had both coolant and engine oil problem all together! Germans are not as smart as Japanese when it comes to engineering
@@1AAuto I found a 2001 330xi with 57000 kms on it. Looks to be in very good condition. Do you think it could have many issues just from being so old and not driven so much ?
I love my 325xi 02 it has over 200000 miles and had to replace alot of things but I love it still will continue to fix whatever it needs to keep driving it.
I've got about 141k miles on my 2001 325Ci convertible. Yep, coolant and oil leaks are an ongoing thing (like once every three years) but I get compliments on my car every day just about. I'm the second owner since 2013 and it was well maintained. I say that I'll probably be buried in it.
I have had all of these problems and more until I finally decided not to sink another penny in my 330i. I sold it last month, but I would love to get another one.
I am 43 and have only ever owned BMW's. I have a 2000 323i with 196k on it. I am the original owner of it and I have never had a oil leak, or a cool leak. If you do not believe me I will send picks and a video.
I had all these problems and more on my 2001 e46 with only 135k. Just did my passenger and driver axles today before that was both control arm. My suggestions is don't buy one unless you know how to fix it yourself.
Some of the BMWs like the E46 generation ones are not too expensive to own. Also there are many BMW engines to avoid. BMWs need a higher amount of maintenance items that say a Toyota. If you follow a maintenance schedule then expensive repairs can be reduced.
My 2005 325i has the fuel pump in the gas tank. It's a California edition so it is different than the same car sent to every other state. Bmw actually extended the warranty by 15 years on this so got it done for free at the dealership 2 or 3 years ago. My car has 118k miles. I've done radiator, water pump, overflow tank, thermostat, all hoses, oil filter housing gasket, oil pan gasket, oil leak on vanos line, and plugs wires and coil packs.
Front lower control arm bushing doesn't require removing the ball joint at the bend in the control arm. Only remove the two bolts at the back, the arm will drop into a position you'll be able to remove the bushing. There is the rubber part, which can be cut off with any knife, then a steel sleeve that fits around the control arm, this may require some hammering but mine came off with some screwdriver prying. Pretty easy job, actually. Reinstallation of the two mount bolts can be helped by using a steel rod or screwdriver to move the arm so that the bolts line up; once you get this, it's easy-peasy.
I have a 2005 BMW 325i with 176,000 miles and my Check Engine Light stays on. My mechanic said its my Secondary Air Cylinder ports that are probably clogged. Do you have any recommendations for that issue? P.S. I've had all the issues you've mentioned in your video lol thanks 😊
There are no Top 5 problems with e46. Almost everything is a problem sooner or later. I have a 2004 330i. I love that car so much, that I spent awful lot of money on a significant reconstruction just 3 months ago (including welding of the body and new paint). But the fact is that there's always something to fix. Unless you have a workshop or a very skilled friend, you'll go bankrupt pretty soon ;)
Control arm does not need to come out to do bushings I just did mine legit last week when u unbolt the bushing the back of the control arm drops down very easy their is more then enough room to slide off and on the new bushings I just did mine on same exact carr I have pics I took with the control arm still installed 2002 bmw 325i did the bushings in 15 mins did not take the control arms out when u loosen the bushing at the 2 bolts take a pry bar and pry very little the back of the control arm that goes thru the bushings drops rite down I wish their was a way for me to upload the pics I took doing it with the control arm still installed I have pics it doesnt let me upload them to show u
He said that if you watch video again. He says "you have to take the control arms off". " Or just unbolt the backside and drop it down and press bushings out". Without taking it all off.
Thanks I have to do this today to my 02 bmw 325xi just goin to replace bushings on control arm thanks helps so much because I have a lug nut stripped out so can't take tire off anyway.
Hey question. Should I buy a 325i 2003 with 90k miles on it?. It looks in really good condition for the age, the interior looks great. Not too many miles, I’m sure something will break eventually but how bad and often does it happen? Any tips will be appreciated thanks
Just take care of the basic maintenance items. Once you buy it change the oil, plugs and coils (if you dont have register of them being done recently) and also find a good shop to give your injectors and vanos solenoids a good clean. Also worth checking the condition of your belt and pulleys, by the sound you can tell if they're in good condition. Otherwise BMW in-line 6 cylinder engines are very reliable and long-lasting and rarely have a failure that leave you stranded. Transmissions are usually good as well (check for service history if you're looking for an automatic). You just have to take good of your car and it will give you many miles of joy.
I bought an 05 330ci coupe from a car auction with little to no background info on it besides it being a clean title and let me tell you every 2 - 3 weeks i get a code or it breaks down on me. These cars can run forever if well taken care of it’s all up to the past owner and how well they took care of the car. Mines only has 84k miles on it. Was my mistake for letting my love for older 3 series models get the best of me and not checking any of the info (pretty dumb) but hey it’s a nice fun car so everytime it’s running It feels good.

After 52k miles on my 2004 bmw 325i SULEV. one OEM ignition coil went bad, replaced all with ELDOR coils. Prior to fixing that I had an oil sensor go bad as I probably drove around a few years with that one bad missing coil. While changing the coil I did break a bracket I haven't replaced. Also my dead pedal has cracked due to me putting weight on it. I have the part but see it difficult to replace. No idea why the dead pedal was of such cheap plastic quality. I also have a rear left window molding/gutter type molding broken. I'll say this, it does eat up tires. I am my third set. the 80k rated good year eagles gave it too hard of a drive and bumpy road. Original tires are $1250 though and good years were under $600. My new all season Michellins are wonderful and yes they were $950 for set. I do keep it in the garage all 18 years I've owned it.
My mother in law recently passed away and she left us a lay 90’s Bmw 325 that doesn’t turn over. It tries to and her last mechanic friend was stumped. It’s a beautiful car that used to run well for her. I am wondering if it’s worth a fix or just to sell

That depends on two factors: were the 32k miles easy or punishing and how well was the car maintained prior to purchase? In the grand scheme of things, you probably don't have a lot to worry about now, but plan on addressing the cooling system around the 60k-75k mile mark. If you rarely have other passengers in your car, the window regulator most likely to break first will be the driver's door unit. Suspension wear will come down to your driving style and the condition of the roads you drive on.
32k miles on a car that old is very, very low. Most of the parts in the video fail simply due age, NOT mileage. The plastic made 20 years ago gets brittle over time and fails. Modern plastics do last longer. I do suggest replacing the cooling system parts proactively vs waiting for failure. The water pump, thermostat and upper/lower hoses are all just behind the radiator and "easy" to do in 1 afternoon. The coolant reservoir is also worth doing proactively. The other issues are annoying but won't cause a blown engine unless you let the car run out of oil.
@@razeroh if you can do it yourself an you have the tools then no not really but if your going to a shop to get it fixed then yeah it can get pretty expensive real quick
I traded my 99 Miata for a 99 323i 5-speed manual with only 139km or 86 thousand miles, the only issue I see is a starting to leak expansion tank, I'm thinking of doing a complete cooling system overhaul, and I'm making a list of what to replace, this is a summer car only
Would you happen to know what the problem might be if this vehicle suddenly ceases to start (No crank or turn over), but the battery and starter are fine? I was looking at buying one, and have run across this issue with 2. Is it an expensive repair?
My E46 320i (2004) model is giving me lots of trouble lately. Engine stalling, vibrations and sometime unstable RPM before the engine is shutting down. I also have some difficulty trying to start the engine. Seem a lot like MAF error (the code said it too) and I replaced a new MAF. But the problem is still exit (getting even worse actually, misfire from all cylinders) and my mechanic suggested that it could be ECU. Can u please kindly give me some advices? Thank you so much in advance.
Look to replace the key plastic parts versus waiting for them to fail. Proactively changing the cooling system parts mentioned in the video is not too expensive and can prevent a blown head gasket = dead engine.
Hello, I’m about to buy a bmw series 3 (yr2000) for my first car for about $2,750 and “the only issues with car is it will need a left rear hub (needs puller to replace) eventually, the front control arms bushings need replaced” Will it cost much? And the miles on it is 184k. & Will it be okay to drive on the highway?
Great comment I own a 2006 330 ci ZHP The dealer will scold you on these repairs Is there somewhere else in the Boston are one Dan go for decent but affordable cost?

I reckon someone could make a video called "The most 100 common problems with a used E46". Trust me, I own one. 2004 325i.
I own a used 2001 😭
Totally agreed. My list is here.
Legend.
Radiator cap common WD40 it , and 50/50 coolant mix 4 right pressure.
Thank you so much in advance.
at what point? mine has 48k miles and it's been garaged 16 years. It's a 2004 325i m56 SULEV Engine
Maybe it's time to sell it??
Look to replace the key plastic parts versus waiting for them to fail. Proactively changing the cooling system parts mentioned in the video is not too expensive and can prevent a blown head gasket = dead engine.

Hello, I’m about to buy a bmw series 3 (yr2000) for my first car for about $2,750 and “the only issues with car is it will need a left rear hub (needs puller to replace) eventually, the front control arms bushings need replaced”
Will it cost much? And the miles on it is 184k. & Will it be okay to drive on the highway?

Is maintenance really that bad and expensive on the e46 and can you guys explain why it’s called e46
Knowledgeable
You forgot the rear subframe too.
My coolade thing blew up today 😢
You should consider power steering box also ☹️
How much for these repairs?? Seriously considering a 2003 Manual Convertible at a reasonable price
Also leaks from water bottle whee it connects to the radiator, O-ribg damaged or fitted incorrectly. Why plastic ? We used an aluminium water bottle.
My e46 touring 325i is now 24 years old and has non of these. Also, my engine looks like it came from the factory today and it has 307k on the clock.
Plastic engine parts throughout the entire engine bay. What a great idea for "The Ultimate Driving Machine".
