    I believe that people have forgotten that the 1974 Oscar winner for best documentary, hearts and minds, was controversial because the winner actually read out an acceptance speech that was a telegram from the north Vietnamese delegation. The audience was booing and hissing and Bob Hope had to come out and do a disclaimer afterwards. People forgot that people were really pissed off about that award

    I do NOT agree with the Marissa Tomei part, how did anyone doubt her performance in My cousin vinny!? That movie is phenomenal and her performance is a major part of that! Can't believe how heated that got me but wth, she's incredible and especially in that movie. I think she 1000% earned that win!

      I think it is due to the fact that it is a comedy. Simple as that. People sill don't think comedy performances can be award worthy and it must be high dramatic performance. Comedies are not taken seriously enough, ironically and that is the issue

    As for Citizen Kane not winning, it wasn't really that surprising. Citizen Kane is an unauthorized biopic of William Randolph Hearst and he basically owned Hollywood in the 40s. The academy would have given the award to Orsen Wells and co, but Hearst threatened the academy and they backed down.

    Elizabeth Taylor's win for Butterfield 8. She had just recovered from a serious illness where she almost died. Many felt her win was a sympathy vote.
    Also, I am not sure if winning a Golden Globes counts on your list, but just im case it does, two words: Pia Zadora

    Good grief, I still think Martin Scorsese should have gotten his long due award for Best Director for GoodFellas during the 90s rather than having him wait another sixteen freaking years for The Departed. Just Saying. GoodFellas is, hands down, my fave Scorsese film.
    Oh, and honestly, the less said about the Will Smith slap, the better. That will definitely be the only Oscar he'll have on his mantelpiece.

    What’s really wack is that Ray Liotta wasn’t even nominated for an Oscar for GoodFellas. Ray Liotta killed that sh!t yo. Beyonce should have won, Adele even said it in her acceptance speech. Adele broke her Grammy in half and tried to give half of it to Beyonce.

    Dances With Wolves is my favorite movie and I think Kevin did a great job directing. I will die alone on this hill apparently. I love the other movies too, but Dances is beautiful.

    Hattie McDaniel was the 1st Black woman to win an Oscar. Seeing this award was won during Jim Crow America, strings had to be pulled just to get her in the BUILDING, & the only person she sat with was her agent.
    Not really a faulty win, but it definitely wasn't well received at the time.

    Number 5 on this list should be entitled "Will Smith Slaps Chris Rock," not "Will Smith Wins Best Actor." If his performance in "King Richard," is good enough to earn him an Academy Award, great! The controversy is about his violent, foul-mouthed temper tantrum. They are two separate things.

    Before the infamous slap, I think the debatable moments of wins at the Oscars was down to either Crash winning Best Picture or Marlon Brando winning Best Actor. The latter which involved him not being present and letting some activist accept it on his behalf.

    I’m sick of people saying Marisa Tomei’s Academy Award win was not deserved. They obviously have never seen the movie…she steals EVERY scene she’s in and that courtroom scene is utter perfection! Comedy is award worthy when you have award worthy actors show why Comedy should be taken more seriously…Tomei 100% deserved it and her and Joe Pesci were comedy gold!

    The Academy rarely gets the Best Picture winner correct. They always go with safe choices (Crash, CODA, Green Book, Shakespeare in Love, etc.). Good movies but definitely not the best of the year.

    The problem i have with Layla is not that it was acoustic but the fact that it's a retooling of an old song. It had it's shot in the 70s. It doesn't deserve another one.

    To be honest, Will Smith’s win wasn’t that controversial until “the slap” occurred. In fact Will Smith was billed as the “next person that should’ve won the Oscars” after Leonardo DiCaprio got his first Oscar win for Best Actor at the 88th Academy Awards.

    When Moonlight won for best picture at the Academy Awards, I wasn’t sure it was going to win that year. I wasn’t sure what it was about but it felt like a cop out for the LGBT community. I thought LaLaLand or Hidden Figures would’ve won. I was so confused that year and I’m surprised it wasn’t on this list

      #12. As great as 1917 was by a technical stand-point, Parasite was the most deserving to win Best Picture of 2019, let alone the fact that Parasite was the first foreign language film to win the biggest award in Oscar history.

      He actually has been banned from future ceremonies, not for life, but until 2032. It’s not known if he’s banned from Oscar nomination or wins again, but if he were to win another Oscar during that period, he would have to send a representative to accept the award for him.

    Watchmojo, I agree with you on Casey Affleck's win. Even if he was great, if he was going through sexual abuse allegations at the time, why was he even nominated? No offense to him, because I still respect him as an actor, and I'm a little ticked that my man Andrew Garfield lost Best Actor to him.

      Because he gave a great perfomance and probably the best performance by a male actor of the year. Say whatever you want about Affleck's personal life but Manchester By The Sea was one masterpiece of a performance from him and he rightfully deserved the Oscar because of his performance. You just need to seperate the actor's life and their acting career. Pretty sure the Academy members weren't aware of his personal life and just go with his fantastic performance in Manchester

    i can understand someone going through chemo and being offended by Chris' joke (although it wasn't offensive or derogatory in the slightest), but alopecia is like a joke itself. and for Will to walk to the stage, knowing full well what he was about to do, planning and thinking about it approaching Chris, there's no excuse in that. it wasn't spur of the moment or instinct, it was calculated and done with ill-intent. no apology ever will make up for the sheer stupidity and pride of his actions.     My opinions (I respect those who disagree with me):
    Game Of Thrones Last Season winning Best Drama Series is really bad, Smell's Like Teen Spirit is better than Layla, Queen's biopic movie winning Best Editing is crap, Jeff Daniels and Kevin Costner was alright, Kesha's song is better than Shape of You, Citizen Kane is King of Cinema, Eminem should have won, Modern Family is overrated, Marisa Tomei is very controversial win, Louis C.K. don't care that much, Kendrick Lamar should have won, Saving Private Ryan is the true winner, Metallica is the true winner of the Metal Category, Brokeback Mountain aged well like fine wine, Will Smith is ok until the slap heard around the world, Beyonce should have won, Andrew Garfield's Hacksaw Ridge is better, I feel bad for Milli Vanilli, and last, but not least, the movie is great, but the director is a monster.

      Another one is West Side Story somehow losing Best Musical to The Music Man. They’re both classics sure, but West Side Story has a much bigger impact to musical theater more than The Music Man. They both have movies, but West Side Story has 2 movies while Music Man has 1.

      The two guys fronting the band didn’t actually sing on the Milli Vanilli album, but somebody did, they should’ve just given the Grammy awards once Milli Vanilli gave them back, to the actual singers on the album because that album spawned a lot of hits and it wasn’t because of the two guys dancing in the video, it was because of the great singing

I mean, I understand that Jeff Daniels' performance in The Newsroom may have been great, even though I have never seen the show, but Bryan Cranston deserved to win for his phenomenal performance. I mean, Breaking Bad has gone on to become one of the greatest, if not the greatest series of all time, but The Newsroom? I guess it's pretty much forgotten, as I haven't heard of it until watching this video.

When Jethro Tull was announced as the winner, a college student editor watching our tiny set threw the Chicago phone book (it was massive) at the TV. He was soooo pissed Metallica or a similar appropriate group didn't win. That memory has long stuck with me.
