I feel like Amber Heard as Mera and Ezra Miller as the flash should be on this list. Controversies didn't show up until after their debuts, but many don't want them to appear in future movies, which they are planned to take part in as of now.
One other problematic detail of Jennifer Lawrence's casting as Katniss is that, while never explicitly stated, Katniss's physical description strongly implies that she's Native American, which fits with her being an expert hunter and woodsman.
I've heard the same thing many times. When I recently re-read the books, all that is said about her physical appearance is that she has grey eyes, olive skin, and curly brown hair. Grey eyes and olive skin can apply to almost any ethnicity (Native American, Latin American, African American, Caucasian, or Asian) so that doesn't narrow things down the way people think it does. And it is never specified whether her hair is actually curly or just wavy (and considering she regularly keeps her hair in a braid and it's questionable due to her intense poverty whether she even owns a brush, let alone a quality one, it's much more likely it's just wavy). So honestly any ethnicity would've worked perfectly, which I think is brilliant on the writer's part because the reader can imagine her however they choose to. That being said, I read the books years before the movie was even announced, and I always pictured someone exactly like Lawrence when I was reading them.
I think the debate is being completely blown out of proportion. If Sonic can sound totally different from his video game counterpart without anyone complaining, than Mario can too.

I mean Daniel Radcliffe’s Harry Potter didn’t had the same eye color as his book counterpart & yet the films made a cultural impact in media. I read Interview With the Vampire in its first edition. When both Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt were cast I was aghast. As it turns out, Mr. Cruise was rather successful in the role, whereas Brad Pitt was truly, woefully miscast.
RDJ has the best redemption arc in modern movie history. from being out of the business for drug possession and use to being THE FACE of the MCU. cant replace tony stark. especially with RiRi WiLlIaMs
I personally think the problem with the 2016 Ghostbusters was that it wasn’t Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. They should’ve kept Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones and the two leads should’ve been Tina Fey and Amy Poehler I like Kristen Wiig and Melissa McCarthy but I don’t think they worked as the two leads. We needed Amy Poehler as an Egon like nerdy socially awkward character. And then Tina Fey could’ve been the Venkman.
I remember when everyone was making a big fuss about not only Henry Cavill playing Superman in Man of Steel but also Ben Affleck as Batman and Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman in Batman V Superman. They of course, also shut everyone up afterwards. Well... almost everyone.
Why? He’s played the King of Siam in the original production, of The King and I, several US Tours in 1976 and 1981 1977 and 1985 Broadway revival and in the 1979 UK Tour. And even if he isn’t Egyptian, at least he looks it in The Ten Commandments (1956).
10:26 Actually, its been confirmed that TJ maybe wont be in Deadpool 3 as he said that he had a "weird" experience working with Ryan Reynolds on the first two films.
Again, backlash from "modern" audiences. What is modern today, wasn't modern back then. People aren't taking into account the difference in ideologies and practices of the past compared to today. To call something terrible because of something "modern" movie watchers become offended over, is just plain ignorance. And to label it "racist" or insensitive and unwatchable is borderline censorship. It's like saying you can't call the kettle black in fear of offending some group who hates the color black.
Yet, the arguments you have stated can be overused. Some things are patently racist. Just because people now say something was racist whereas people decades ago did not does not mean it is a problem with modern standards vs. former ones.
If you're interested, read the article titled "No Tom Cruise!”: An Author and Her Fans’ Attempt to Sabotage a Hollywood Vampire" (I can't put a link because TH-cam censorship would take my comment down). I read it last summer, I was extremely surprised because I didn't know about it. At the same time, I've learned about the release of the series and I absolutely hate the actors that they casted for it.
i'm so sick of people needing sexual minority actors to do sexual minority roles. it's called ACTING. it doesn't matter who does it as long as they do a great job and are fit for the role. though i do agree that they should try and find actors of specific ethnicity to fill the needed ethnic roles. also acting IS impersonating people you act as, if based on real people that is, so even though i haven't seen Being the Ricardos yet and Nicole seems to have done a good job i do wonder what kind of job Debra would've done because she NAILED it on Will & Grace. as for Mario imagine changing his overalls to yellow or making him tall. it's the same thing with changing his voice. it looks like Mario but it's NOT Mario.
@@trixicenby999 Actually looking back on old articles when the movie came out, that was a 'selling point' media websites were buzzing about. That was a lot of controversy.
@@jimbo9208 The skin color matters very little in a world where your body can have red eyes and purple hair and go completely unremarked upon. Imo the athletics and skills needed to bring The Major to life matter more than the color of her skin. They didn't have to say anything about why The Major looked the way she did than "I chose this form". Edited to add: another thing about the Anime especially is how much Russian influence there is, so Kusanagi could be part Russian, part Japanese, hence Caucasian coloring.
Depp never plays two of the same role? Depp ALWAYS plays the same role, over and over, or do you mean gives different performances? He gives the same performance no matter what he does.
As an American, Scarlett Johansson only has the body and figure of Makoto Kisaragi, nothing else. Kisaragi was always Japanese to me because of her mannerisms, movements, and of course her name. Japan on the other hand didn't seem to mind the casting choice because they have beauty standards for white people. It's funny because the live-action BLEACH was a success overseas, but it flopped in Japan.

The sad part to all the involved in The Conqueror eventually developed deseases by radiation!!! Including John Wayne himself and Mexican actor Pedro Armendáriz who killed himself because the pain of the cancer!!!
I didn't see people complaining that Sonic didn't have his voice actor from the recent games in his movies, but when it came to Mario, people instantly despised it, Charles Martinet isn't as young as he was over 2 decades ago, for games at most he records each unique line once or twice to get it perfect which given the games, isn't that many, plus Mario is from Brooklyn, not straight from Italy, he might be Italian by blood, but he still came from his home in Brooklyn which he's lived in for who knows how long
Half of these are “ cultural appropriation” which is absolutely sad and ridiculous. You should be able to play anyone of any culture or race as long as you go a good job of it. We are all ONE RACE we are humans God didn’t create us to separate ourselves by color or region. It’s like a chocolate lab and a yellow lab they are the exact same breed but we’re just born with different colorations.
I still have mixed feelings over Pratt's casting as Mario. But until we see another trailer with more of Pratt as Mr. Nintendo who knows maybe it'll convince me. If not who knows.
Yeah I kinda have mixed feelings about Christ Pratt voicing Mario too. So I'll wait for any new trailers with Pratt to prove me if he's good for the role or not.
It's almost like people don't know what acting is. Next they're going to say the next Superman actor better actually be from Krypton or the next Transformers movie better actually have Cybertronians from Cybertron.
Another Breakfast at Tiffanys fact is that Truman Capote, who wrote the book & screenplay, wanted Marilyn Monroe as Holly Golightly, but she turned it down on the advice of Lee Strasburg. Capote was furious, claiming he'd been betrayed in every way.
Don't you love how someone simply saying that someone did something bad is enough to ruin their careers and possibly their lives? Ah the power of the internet.
Mario fans don’t even realize that Martine wasn’t Mario’s first voice actor but rather Peter Cullen yes I’m not kidding the voice of Optimus Prime was the voice of Mario BEFORE Optimus Prime and then there’s Captain Lou from The Super Mario Brothers Super Show and finally Bob Hoskins in the infamous 1993 live action movie and Mario was a Brooklyn plumber meaning the Mario in the games is an Italian stereotype
You're wrong about Ghostbusters 2016, it actually is pretty bad, even if women weren't in the leads, to me if there were a better script and storyline then maybe it would've been better and we could've given the franchise an even better legacy.
I agree, they could have proved everyone wrong, like some actors in the list. But the casting was... not the best. The script was awful. I watched it in cinema with my fiancé - the first thing she said after watching it was: "Why all the male bashing jokes?"
There is no "controversy" behind Pratt as Mario, really, just a bunch of egotists on social media looking for a reason to dunk on him, and virtue signalling narcissist celebrities piling on, had they picked a more Twitter-friendly celebrity like Paul Rudd or Chris Evans, this controversy would be non-existent
Another one would be, yet again, Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher. Jack Reacher is basically an NFL linebacker, with military and tactical training. And in my opinion, Tom Cruise did a great job; so much so, that he even made a sequel.
A mention I would put in is Chris Evans aka Captain America as Buzz Lightyear for the Lightyear movie. Many Lightyear fans were upset Chris Evans voiced the famous Space Ranger instead of the orginal actor Tim Allen. Nevertheless, I enjoyed Lightyear and I believe Chris Evans did an amazing job voicing our favorite Space Ranger.
In the other movies Buzz is a toy, meanwhile the 2022 movie is about the real person behind the toy so to me it kind of makes sense that they don't have the same voice. 🤷♀️
I finally decided to watch Breakfast at Tiffanys over thirty years later to see what all the fuss was about and practically the first face in the screen was MIckey Rooney as the Asian landlord. It was funny because I had never heard anything about that. I watched as the credits rolled and with no idea what the plot and therefore, Mr. Yumioshi, was supposed to be, when I saw "Mickey Rooney as Mr. Yumioshi" I sensed there was going to be some strange looking the other way with this film. Being well aware of Rooney's enthusiasm during WWII and American patriotism, there was no surprise in how he portrayed this fellow. I've never finished watching that movie. I guess the biggest outrage really must be that at that same moment, Keye Luke, Victor Sen Yung or Sammee Tong would have been much more believable in the role without all that closed eyes, growling and protruding teeth business.
One thing that annoys me is when people get mad when people from fictional places don't match real world views. Like with Avatar - I get that it's very heavily influenced by real life Asian places/cultures, but they're in a whole separate world. They can't be Asian as we know it because that's not a thing there. It may have a slew of other issues, but I think it's dumb to make that one of them. I'm ready for the hate now.
I don't necessarily agree with you because you have the source cartoons to go by. However, I will say that, regardless of his nationality, if you put a picture of Noah Ringer up against a picture of the cartoon Aang, there is a definite likeness. Now, if he was an actual actor ... LOL
So no mention of black washing little mermaid huh?? Or hawkgirl? Or starfire? Or mary jane? Heimdall? the flash? Domino? Roland? Django? MJ from spiderman? Electro? Human torch? Nick fury? Annie? Fairy godmother? Perry white? I can keep on going....
The character in 'Aloha' was based off of a real person, who is red-headed and doesn't look like her Chinese or Hawaiian background! In 'Ghost in the Shell' the Major's body is a European model! It wasn't a third act twist, it's LITERALLY in the anime! Even the anime's creator praised Scarlett's casting! ....I am sooooo fu**ing tired of people yelling that something is whitewashed when it isnt!!!

God, I loved Daniel Craig as James Bond and Heath Ledger as Joker!
I think Chris Pratt as Mario is fine, not great, but not bad either🤷🏻♂️
Heath Ledger was scary good as the Joker.
Oh, Tina and Amy would make any movie great (unless they filled it with a bunch of dirty jokes, but that’s just a personal preference).
I would have worked better if this version of the Ghostbusters were a co-Ed team.
I remember when everyone was making a big fuss about not only Henry Cavill playing Superman in Man of Steel but also Ben Affleck as Batman and Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman in Batman V Superman. They of course, also shut everyone up afterwards. Well... almost everyone.
Personally, I would've loved to see an actual Ben Affleck batman movie. His batman voice was better than Christian Bale imo
I can't believe someone cast john Wayne in that film 😂🤣😆
Hopefully people will give the Mario movie a chance and not bash it. I'll give it a chance and see it.
Chris Pratt as Mario was actually really good
Jennifer Lawrence was brilliant as Katniss everdeen 💯
I’m glad Yul Brynner as the King of Siam and Rameses didn’t get mentioned
Why? He’s played the King of Siam in the original production, of The King and I, several US Tours in 1976 and 1981 1977 and 1985 Broadway revival and in the 1979 UK Tour. And even if he isn’t Egyptian, at least he looks it in The Ten Commandments (1956).
@@hunterolaughlin because this video was about controversial casting choices and I thought Yul Brynner did excellent in those movies
10:26 Actually, its been confirmed that TJ maybe wont be in Deadpool 3 as he said that he had a "weird" experience working with Ryan Reynolds on the first two films.
Actually, I can't imagine anybody but John Wayne in the role of Temujin.
It cracks me up!
I didn't know Tom Cruise was not wanted as Lestat. Fortunately he could be in the movie to give us one of his best performances imo.

Hey, Chris Pratt is great for casting Mario. I'm not gonna let you guys diss the Mario Movie, y'know.
i'm so sick of people needing sexual minority actors to do sexual minority roles. it's called ACTING. it doesn't matter who does it as long as they do a great job and are fit for the role. though i do agree that they should try and find actors of specific ethnicity to fill the needed ethnic roles.
also acting IS impersonating people you act as, if based on real people that is, so even though i haven't seen Being the Ricardos yet and Nicole seems to have done a good job i do wonder what kind of job Debra would've done because she NAILED it on Will & Grace.
as for Mario imagine changing his overalls to yellow or making him tall. it's the same thing with changing his voice. it looks like Mario but it's NOT Mario.
When was sexuality mentioned/relevant to this video?
@@trixicenby999 Eddie Redmayne - the danish girl - the first movie they mentioned in this list.
@@Therisktaker3 Which has nothing to do with sexual identity
@@trixicenby999 Actually looking back on old articles when the movie came out, that was a 'selling point' media websites were buzzing about. That was a lot of controversy.
@@Grimrapings Huh so weird, considering since the focus on the film is gender identity and not sexuality
Mamoru Oshii had no problem with Scarlet as the major thus no one else should...
why, she not Chinese why cast a white person when a Chinese person would have made more sense
As a Italian I don’t mind Chris Pratt playing Mario and sence my great grandpas name was Mario my opinion means more

Scarlett Johansson as Kusanagi from Ghost in the shell. A lot of people were angry they didn't cast an Asian Woman to play her.
@@KenMasters.
MOTOKO KUSANAGI never acted like a Japanese woman, whether it is in the manga or in the movies and series. Just the fact that you don't even know her name shows how you know shit about GitS so go back watching One Piece and leave GitS to the people who actually know and appreciate it...

Chris Pratt gave Mario a NY Brooklyn accent, deal with it, bitches.
"Say 'white washing' again, I fucking dare you"
I like GHOST IN THE SHELL and I love THE LONE RANGER and PRINCE OF PERSIA despite the controversial casting.
The sad part to all the involved in The Conqueror eventually developed deseases by radiation!!! Including John Wayne himself and Mexican actor Pedro Armendáriz who killed himself because the pain of the cancer!!!
I didn't see people complaining that Sonic didn't have his voice actor from the recent games in his movies, but when it came to Mario, people instantly despised it, Charles Martinet isn't as young as he was over 2 decades ago, for games at most he records each unique line once or twice to get it perfect which given the games, isn't that many, plus Mario is from Brooklyn, not straight from Italy, he might be Italian by blood, but he still came from his home in Brooklyn which he's lived in for who knows how long
I never knew that Mario was ACTUALLY from our world. 😅🤣🤣🤣
Yep exactly lmao.
Sonic sounds similar to the games. Chris Pratt does not sound remotely similar.
I think scarlett as ghost in the shell was fine
It's almost like people don't know what acting is. Next they're going to say the next Superman actor better actually be from Krypton or the next Transformers movie better actually have Cybertronians from Cybertron.
Another Breakfast at Tiffanys fact is that Truman Capote, who wrote the book & screenplay, wanted Marilyn Monroe as Holly Golightly, but she turned it down on the advice of Lee Strasburg. Capote was furious, claiming he'd been betrayed in every way.
I like Chris Pratt's role as mario for the upcoming mario movie.
You forgot Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luther. Watching him as Lex Luther was truly painful.
Wonder if either Bryan Cranston or Robert Downey Jr. could fit well onto the role of Lex Luthor??
Don't you love how someone simply saying that someone did something bad is enough to ruin their careers and possibly their lives? Ah the power of the internet.
No mention of Little Mermaid Live action and the horrible casting of Dukes of Hazard.
Yah where’s Ariel??
Charlize Theron as Aileen Wuornos - Monster (2003)
and Renee Zellweger as Bridget Jones - Bridget Jones' Diary (2001)
I’m glad I wasn’t the only one that was disappointed when I heard Mario’s voice lol
The casting in the Super Mario Bros. movie turned out to a big success making it the biggest animated movie ever made.
Are you referring to Saturday Supercade?
Everyone The Last Airbender. I died 😂☠️
I like how u guys assembled both crap roles and roles that could’ve gone bad but were what made the movie enjoyable
You're wrong about Ghostbusters 2016, it actually is pretty bad, even if women weren't in the leads, to me if there were a better script and storyline then maybe it would've been better and we could've given the franchise an even better legacy.
Yeah it wasn't bad because of the female leads...it was horrible because the script was horrible and the directing was terrible.
I agree, they could have proved everyone wrong, like some actors in the list. But the casting was... not the best. The script was awful. I watched it in cinema with my fiancé - the first thing she said after watching it was: "Why all the male bashing jokes?"
There is no "controversy" behind Pratt as Mario, really, just a bunch of egotists on social media looking for a reason to dunk on him, and virtue signalling narcissist celebrities piling on, had they picked a more Twitter-friendly celebrity like Paul Rudd or Chris Evans, this controversy would be non-existent
there is controversy to me his voice dose not really work well with the character
@@jimbo9208 If you're used to Martinette's voice, surely not.
Another one would be, yet again, Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher. Jack Reacher is basically an NFL linebacker, with military and tactical training. And in my opinion, Tom Cruise did a great job; so much so, that he even made a sequel.
Elizabeth Taylor had no business playing Cleopatra
For me. I just wish he had a Italian accent. But yeah the classic Mario voice works to
Charlton heston in "El Cid", Marlon Brando in "Zapata"...
@@shizukagozen777 Yes. I agree.
The plot twist ruined the movie, though.
Justin Timberlake as Boo Boo (Yogi Bear 2010 film) has left the chat!
