The Bee Gees actually began their careers in Australia, where they lived for many years when very young. Their first number 1, Spicks and Specks was in Australia. That would be the reason for the first two albums being released in Australia. I have been a Bee Gees fan since they started in Australia. Robin Gibb had one of the finest voices of his generation, imo. It is glorious.

Robin has a distinctive sound, he is incredible with I'VE GOT TO GET A MESSAGE TO YOU and he wrote and sang of my home state MASSACHUSETTS.. One of my absolute favorite Bee Gees songs is TRAGEDY. A much more hard rocking sound.

    • @justtere
      @justtere 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

According to all the important tabloids at the time (Tiger Beat, etc.) Barry wrote Massachusetts on a dare that there were words he couldn't write a song about.
I wish I could remember who it was that dared him. Anyway, the word chosen was Massachusetts. I can understand thinking no one could do that. He not only won the dare he also wrote such a beautiful song.
Oh, I just remembered where I heard this recently. It was a documentary about the group, with Barry discussing how hard it is to believe he outlived all of his brothers, including Andy.
So I also heard it from his mouth, verifying what I remember reading in Tiger Beat. So it must have been any of his three brothers.
As I write this, I remember Barry saying the falsetto was not his idea. One of the brothers was doing the falsetto. Their producer at the time (me with CRAC, sorry) had Maurice try for it, so we got Barry. The producer wanted Robin to save his very special voice.

He also sang lead on "Massachusetts", "I've Gotta Get A Message To You", "How Can You Mend A Broken Heart" etc. Some of their other early hits were "New York Mining Disaster 1941", "To Love Somebody", "Holiday", "World", "And The Sun Will Shine", "Really & Sincerely", "Words", "The Singer Sang His Song", ""Lonely Days", "Melody Fair", "First Of May", "Give Your Best", "Lamplight" etc.

❤"And The Sun Will Shine" has a similar effect on me, as yours was to
"I Started A Joke"❤ ...it's just _the_ most intense feeling, yet difficult to describe. Robin Gibb was _always_ my favourite 'BeeGee' right from the start and I felt so sorry for him (and Barry etc) when Andy died, and even more so when Maurice - his twin brother - younger than Robin by 30 minutes - died after so short an illness, albeit that Maurice suffered intense abdominal pain prior to his death... Awful.😢 Then, Robin... I was so sad, and poor Barry, his sister and all of the Gibb children...
      Condolences to all who grieve.

The song HOLIDAY ❤ Robin’s vibrato has a haunting quality, strong and clear. Most BeeGees songs that are sad, feature his voice as lead. His voice is so unique that I actually recognized it when I heard an “unknown” Bee Gees song used as a sound track on a TV show. Maurice has the deepest voice of the 3, but they know where to use the voices on their songs to get the best emotional response from listeners. The combination of voices makes magic. Listen to them sing live at concerts. You can see how they combine their voices and some live performances are even better than studio versions. Listen to their individual voices and see how they mesh together so beutifically

RJ was born in January of 1983. We can do the math. RJ was also adamant about Snow not being Robin's daughter, perhaps fearful of losing some inheritance. She is Robin's doppelganger although half Asian. Interestingly, Spencer, Melissa and Snow received money after Robin died. RJ did not. Snow received a home for her and her mother. I'm 72 and English. I remember when the Bee Gees were new in Britain. They were all born on the Isle of Man in the Irish Sea, but then moved to Manchester, their mother's home town, where they started singing in public at a very young age. Then they moved to Australia, where they became professional and left school early. They were amazed by the Beatles when they went to Australia and tried for some years to have a hit record. Then decided to return to England and sign up with Brian Epstein, the Beatles manager. He was too busy and passed them to Robert Stigwood, who took them to success. I always liked Robin the best he had a beautiful voice and when I found out that he was short-sighted like me, it was even better. He said it gave him confidence to go on stage, as he couldn't see the audience. Barry always said that Robin punched more than his weight, both physically and musically.

SalvoG, what a wonderful reaction to Robin's signature song. Every time he performed it live he received a standing ovation sometimes lasting over a minute. One live performance that you should check out would be 1989's Melbourne concert, one of his most notable performances of this amazing song where he did receive a very long standing o. One very horrible incident in Robin's life that probably contributed to him writing very sad songs like "I Started a Joke" was the November 1967 Hither Green train disaster where he and future wife Molly were almost killed. Robin, still a teenager, was nearly decapitated from a train rail that came through their car and missed him by mere inches. He got out through a window and helped Molly out as well and continued to help others who were badly hurt or worse and this horrible experience stayed with him his entire life. Barry even said that it brought the pathos out in his brother and he was never the same. What a brave young man he was that day but it had a very lasting effect on him. Thank you for reacting to one of Robin's most beautiful leads and if I could suggest one other. "I Can't See Nobody" is another amazing Robin lead and "The Midnight Special" channel recently released a 1973 live performance which, in my humble opinion, is his best performance ever of this extraordinary song. He poured his heart and soul into all his live performances but this 1973 performance was just mesmerizing. Please consider reacting to this wonderful Robin lead. It would be greatly appreciated.

@@jpmnewyork - In that train wreck there was a young man about his own age crying out to Robin "Please don't let me die" but Robin couldn't get him out of the tangled wreckage and his voice faded away. The next day, although told to rest he said he had to let his feelings out and he wrote a song with the lyrics "Really and Sincerely I tried". It could be interpreted as a love song but the meaning is clear. At only 17 he had to comfort people terribly injured some even needing on the spot amputations to free them, many died impaled by rails. He had PTSD for life. It wasn't recognised or treated back then.

Whenever I hear this song...I am reminded of how it might be a song of someone spiraling into depression. That is how I see this song. It is incredibly deep and beautiful...and SAD AND HELPLESS at the same time. Robin's voice is unique and I have never heard anyone else sound like HIM...in my 62 yrs on this Planet. The BeeGees will always be remembered fondly and with a ton of love and respect for their work...and their contributions to music. They have written songs for other artists...I believe.

Hi SalvoG, This is one of my favourite songs of all time. I was introduced to it by a lovely lady called Christine in the late 1980's. I had a holiday in 1989 to Kenya, and I played this multiple times through my headphones on the outbound flight. After 3 glorious weeks, I returned, with this amazing piece of music whirling around my head for the whole 8 hour flight! I cried. Cried some more.......
I thank you for your reaction to this, and completely understand why it brought tears to your eyes. What an honest reaction. Robin's voice was astonishing. From Robin to Robin.

Though this song is considered old in musical reference, it still springs new to the masses who perpetually discover and rediscover the talents of the Bee Gees. Even those of us who have been fans for the span of a generation find new meaning in old lyrics as life carries us into dimensions we have never before explored.
Often seen as a spiritual commentary on Robin's part, he has never claimed that to be the basis of the piece, as such. Experience draws us all in a diversity of directions, often all at once, and inspiration is the trickle-down of that overload.
I am not one to climb into the great minds of our times and autopsy their brainchild of work but I have an awareness of something woven into the lyric here that I've never before seen discussed. The piece encompasses only eight lines of poetic statement, clean and straight-forward in appearance and delivery, yet steeped in the mystery of a thousand ages. This song leaves naked, parts of the soul we tend to keep covered, even from our own deeper selves.
We see in it, our own personal sins of omission that do not look so pretty in black and white and are even more haunting when presented in a package of understated music and single-voiced verse. Although I do see where the spiritual intonation peers through the lyric at us, I see here, too, the personal commentary of an inner moral dilemma being posed by the subject and the step by step process by which he rationalizes his justification for not following his inner personal voice. This person wants desperately to shed his etiquetted skin and stand on the purity of truth rather than cower in civilized silence in the face of injustice.
He theorizes the consequences of such an action on his part. He knows his statement will upset the world that, up to this point, was living comfortably in its own shallow self-deception. Because his view is so different from everyone else, he knows this will upset the sedate tranquility of those around him. In defensive retaliation, rather than re-examining, reforming, and admitting to the error of their ways, society would turn its collective, disdainful back on his statement and proclaim the fundamental truth he has exposed to be merely the folly of a prankster.
He goes on to see that he will not be taken seriously and cries in the frustration of being the only one who has had this vision of truth and reality. He feels alone and small in the cosmos. At this, he knows the world will take great delight in his outward appearance of weakness and defeat and in their arrogance he knows they will unite in crushing declamation and mercilessly taunt him wherever he goes, all the days of his life.
He looks up, seeking heavenly approval and resolve of the issue. He attempts to clear his eyes searching for a sign of the miraculous awakening of those around him. Just as he begins to dry his eyes in the faith that, because of his sincerity of heart, there will surely now be change, he tumbles out of his dream-state into reality. He falls hard from grace back into the moment.
The enormity of the entire situation crashes over him like a tidal wave as he sees the ramifications of what he has started by his simple statement of truth. He is paralyzed in thought and can no longer make sense of his own words as they drown in the whirlpool of confusion between human emotion and soulful truth. He eventually dies a broken man because he knows the truth but never pursued it to the fullest of its intent due to his lack of courage in his own personal convictions. He saw himself as wholly inadequate to challenge what he did not approve of in this world so he never stood up for what he believed in.
After his death, civilization perpetuates itself in its blithe ignorance, unscathed by the voice of truth he held within. He is gone, and with him, the potential threat he posed to a thinly-skinned euphoric society.
In the end, he sees that he had indeed been right and that society was truly wrong. He knows then, all too late, that he would have made a difference if only he had not given in to his own imagined fears.
He wasted a lifetime repressing himself and the truth he had once envisioned. He had become his own worst enemy. He had shackled his own soul down - not the society that he had tried to hold accountable for his lack of action. He ultimately became the very thing he once morally raged against - a silent, self-deceiving member of a pretentious urbane society.
Yes, the joke WAS on him.

Their first two albums were probably only released in Australia because the British Invasion wasn't just British bands becoming known around the world. The Australian music scene was fairly insular until The Seekers' 1964 breakout hit "I'll Never Find Another You" topped charts worldwide. That opened the door for The Bee Gees, Helen Reddy, Olivia Newton-John and all the others who followed.

I don’t think that in all these years have I ever seen someone so moved by this song. Although, I understand where you’re coming from. For me, I usually react to the pain in a singer’s voice. But it’s also tough for me to watch some reactor’s as their reaction can make me become overly emotional to the point of choking up and getting weepy. But then again, I find these moments to be cathartic and healing. Thanks for being human and not a non-emotional block of granite. And as far as the early Bee Gee’s go, my favorites have always been “Words” and “Massachusetts”.

One of their very best. Robin's voice, the lyrics, the background vocals, the whole production, make it a special song. Their early stuff was so good. I started hearing their music when I was eight or nine. One of my good friend's older siblings had their 'best of' album and we would listen to that a lot way back then. It's impossible for me to comprehend hearing this (or any of the music from back then) for the first time now, as an adult. This video is a good example of why I often enjoy watching reaction videos. Not so much the reaction itself, but seeing someone discover something new, seeing their appreciation of it and being affected by it. And the 'sharing' of it - even though you're not with that person, it still feels like you're sharing the experience of hearing the song.
